Nobody seems to talk about the Dalton era of James Bond and some of the people that do, seem to hate it. But not me, I like the Dalton era, as you can probably tell. I even made a video about it. Oh and in the last five minutes or so, I ramble about the next Bond movie title.

Dalton’s take on the Bond character was the breath of fresh air the franchise needed. His performance as Bond made me believe I was seeing the Bond from the books on film. Licence to Kill remains my favourite and it’s because of his performance. Had he got the third film he was promised I think he would’ve been more praised and given the recognition he needs. He’s MY Bond.

He had offered more than 3rd film. He was supposed to be in GoldenEye but he didn't continue. Cubby Broccoli said: After 6 years break you can't make one and walk away but Timothy was not interested in making more than 3 in total. That's why Pierce was brought on the board.

Having binge-watched all the James Bond films on my week off work (3 a day, in case you were wondering), I now think that Timothy Dalton was a criminally underrated James Bond. He was a breath of fresh air after the light-hearted and tongue in cheek excesses of the Roger Moore era. His Bond was ruthless, stern, gritty, and had a romantic side to him that showed how human he really was. Whereas Moore’s final four movies were like a never-ending camp party, Dalton’s only two outings were like having a bucket of cold water dumped on your head. It’s a shame the legal issues prevented him from doing another Bond movie. Had these issues not happened, he would of done Property of a Lady/Whisper of Terror in 1991 and then signed off with GoldenEye in 1993. What could of been, eh?

You are so correct, Fleming described Bond as looking like Hoagy Carmichael with a more cruel mouth, and in the books Bond is quite a dark character.
@Gamingnstuff131
@Gamingnstuff131 3 года назад
@@janandersen8735 I’m sorry to burst you bubble but he does not look like Hoagy Carmicle. Sean Connery is the closest to Carmicle. Roger Moore a close second. Closest Dalton got to Carmicle was in TLD. In LTK, he looks more like a younger British version Charles Bronson to go with the desperate attempt to keep up with 80s action movies due to the low popularity of the 007 series at the time.
@Gamingnstuff131
@Gamingnstuff131 3 года назад
As for him acting like the novel version, there were things that held him back, most notably how chaste they made his version of the character for the AIDS epidemic and in LTK how they made him too much of a bloodthirsty madman to keep up with popular action movies at the expense of the character. If they weren’t holding the character back as much he probably could’ve gone further. TLD was the only movie he did that worked. They got him just right in a way that could get audiences to view the movie and be more open to his portrayal. It certainly proved to be the right direction after how poorly AVTAK did but audiences still weren’t entirely convinced. The producers were really wanting Pierce Brosnan to take over. Dalton wasn’t their first choice around 1986 as he kept turning the role. He only received the role by sheer luck. Brosnan nearly took over the role but an hour before his Remington Steele contract expired NBC renewed the series for another season. The producers knew Brosnan would make the series far more popular again. Unfortunately, he lost the 007 part and season 6 of Remington Steele was canceled after ratings plummeted again due to Bronson missing out on the 007 part. The bulk of his 007 movies didn’t work either for similar reasons in regard to keeping up with popular action movies but Brosnan was able to make the series popular again. Dalton’s popularity has only grown because of Daniel Craig. Before that, practically everyone didn’t care for Dalton’s portrayal or his movies. Craig is the closest to the novel version but not entirely. No actor has ever gotten it entirely down. The character of the novels is far more explicit and unrestrained when in came to his thoughts regarding homophobia, sexism and racism. He smokes way more than any actor ever did and drinks way more. The movie character is toned way down in comparison. Even Daniel Craig, the most unfiltered of the on screen portrayals, is still not quite the level of the novel character. There are things that work in a novel that don’t work on screen. The complete Fleming interpretation is one of them. Even he was aware of this. It wasn’t until Sean Connery took over with Dr.No that the movie series took off that was attempted 9 years earlier with 1953’s Casino Royale and it also significantly increased the popularity of Fleming’s novels.

@@Gamingnstuff131 They were talking about general attitude too. No way you would put Roger Moore over Dalton in terms of faithfulness to the books. At the time Dalton was following the long tenure of Roger Moore who developed his light hearted humor and tongue in cheek humor in 7 films over the course of 12 years. At the time in 80s some fans and critics weren’t necessarily warming up to a darker tone in Bond films but Timothy Dalton wanted to make his films his own. The Living Daylights was actually a big hit but Licence To Kill critics thought it was too dark and it was not marketed well and was a box office failure. It didn’t help Licence To Kill went against Batman, Lethal Weapon 2 and Indiana Jones 3 at the box office which were big hits. In recent years fans have grown to appreciate Timothy Dalton and he was ahead of his time and he more liked now but think fans of the films didn’t necessarily read the books as Dalton read the books and he followed the books interpretation of Bond. I actually liked Timothy Dalton as Bond but been a fan of movie series as was 8-9 years old in 95 when Goldeneye came out.

@@scottknode898 I can get why Roger Moore did Octopussy at the time. It would of been box office suicide for Albert Broccoli to introduce a new Bond actor comparing to Sean Connery in Never Say never again. Moore was a respectable Bond for the audience at the time. As for A View to a Kill I reckon it was Broccoli saying "right let's get Roger to one more". It be both Connery and Moore would of done 7 Bond films but Rog would had done 7 whereas Connery did 6 and the phoney one. I agree that A View To A Kill should of had Timothy Dalton or any fresh blood.

Even though I was a little kid at the time, I recall people being critical towards Timothy Dalton's portrayal; some would judge him without even seeing the his films. People were (and still are) very tribal about Bond falling into either the Connery or Moore camps, while being conditioned into expecting how Bond is supposed to be. Audiences were so used to Bond being a smooth, charming ladies man, one who cracked jokes, who never got hurt or faced any serious jeopardy, so when Timothy brought the character back down to earth, made him human, believable and showed respect towards the source material, many found the contrast too jarring. Time has been kind to Dalton's stint, and with it, people have woken up or been exposed to what a terrific job he did. He is my favourite Bond, he ticks all of the boxes. Connery is second, he was great to start with but looked increasingly disinterested and laid back as his run continued. Daniel Craig takes third spot simply because of his performance in Casino Royale (imo his films have taken a nose dive since then though he has still done a good job).

Dalton is my favorite Bond. As a boy, I read all the Fleming books, and so I always expected the movies to portray 007 as Fleming defined him. Connery partly nailed it, Moore totally missed it, Lazenby got a few things right, but Dalton got the whole character correct. Brosnan wasn't as unpleasant to watch as Moore, and had good acting chops, Craig brought more of Fleming into his portrayal, but not as much as Dalton. Thanx for posting!

It wasn’t his fault but the legal issues that prevented any Bond films from being produced from 89-94 caused a lot of frustration for Timothy Dalton. He was offered to come back in 94 before Goldeneye was to begin filming and by then he made commitments to other roles and decided to resign from playing Bond in 94 while doing a mini series. He didn’t want to commit to multi picture deal after Goldeneye and keep playing Bond in to his 50s. Dalton was the best bond. He was the ‘dark and gritty’ bond before Craig, but unlike the latter who comes through as a hired mercenary in a suit at best instead of a suave government spy capable of killing coldly when needed, Dalton portrayed the right balance of the social side of Bond and the determined agent. The biggest issue with Dalton wasn’t Dalton himself but rather the scripts and the era. Living Daylights still had a bit of the influence from the Moore era of films, specially the later ones, which had an over reliance on roll-your-eyes comedy, something that didn’t mesh with Dalton’s no nonsense approach to the character. On top of that the “bad guy(s)” in Daylights are truly terrible and hardly an imposing presence. License To Kill fixes this in many respects, reducing the comedy and putting in a bad guy that actually looked like he could take Bond one on one. Probably the biggest issue was the fear the production of going “too dark” with the character for fear of moving too far off the PG-13 formula of the 80’s.

Back in the beginning of the 90's, I was starting to like him more and more with repetitive viewings of his two movies ( on tv for the first time in my home Country The Netherlands showed remarkable Ratings.Both ''Daylights'' and ''Licence''scored over more than two million viewers.Those were quite the numbers back then in our tv-landscape and shown in prime time in mid-weeks! And also on VHS they were record sellers and buyers as well. ''Daylights'' received 'Gold' because of it's numbers of buyed copies in the video-market,and ''Licence'' was even better scoring 'Platinum!' ) I had the impression that Dalton was just as popular as Connery and Moore,and I was really looking forward for his third Movie.I knew that he had signed for 3 movies. But sadly,that never came. And when the years passes by ('91'..'92'...'93'...'94'..)the gap became too large that some critics were discussing and blaiming(!) Dalton's more darker take on Bond and that it didn't 'pleased' the audience at all. And it was suddenly(!) a 'hidden secret' for us that his films actually 'underperformed' in theaters! When Dalton signed off, it made matters even worse for him. I was very displeased of these unfair critcism and threw them away as nonsense. ''Daylights''and ''Licence'' were amongst the 'finest' of the series and too important and monumental (for me)to ignore them entirely. And yes, he was Ahead of it's Time. He was very much the 'Dark Knight' of the Bond's.( 'Nolan' likes them.) Craig's performance as 007 in 2006 may have reminded viewers of Dalton's earlier take, but it was in the year 2001 that Someone else reminded me So strongely of Dalton; It was Kiefer Sutherland in the hit series ''24''...His Jack Bauer acted truly in the spirit of Timothy's portrayal of a rough and unpredictable agent in the fields. Even his voice sounded similair in tone of Dalton's Bond in disstress. All in all it was a short but memorable 'era' that growed in me and clearly for others in years,decades that has followed.

I went to see Licence to Kill at the cinema in 89. No one was hardly in the cinema at the the time. The film had only just been released in the UK. Critics had very mixed reactions to the film and the darker tone. John Barry didn't return to do the music, but an American film composer, Michael Kamen ( who did a decent job with the score and the title song, Licence to Kilt, lol) I think the producers and UA with United International Pictures in the UK didn't realy know how to market Licence to Kill. The film poster and promotional material seemed somewhat confused. The poster artwork for all the Bond's had been stunning, especially The Living Daylights, but Licence to Kill had a early photo shopped look to it's poster, and it made it look cheap. Dalton was the best Bond I've seen, except for Connery, and Brosnan. Brosnan had a very decent opening with Goldeneye and fairly enjoyable second film, Tomorrow Never Dies, but after those two films, Brosnan's final couple of films were let down's in my opinion. Dalton is the near perfect Bond. He had all the attributes that marked him out as a Fleming Bond, and John Glen did decent job with the direction on Licence. All in all, Licence to Kill will be the bench mark moment for a Bond film from the 1980's, and even now. Casino Royale is an indication and to some degree a nod back to Licence to Kill in 1989. Craig's Bond is far too Psychopathic and cold in character, whereas Dalton's Bond has the Fleming qualities, but still has that sophisticated element that's so lacking in Craig's Bond, because of that more "in your face" cold calculating characte.r the producers prefered

As Scott said, Dalton turned down the Bond role in the late 60's because he considered, correctly, that he was too young being only in his mid-twenties. He was a fan of the first 3 Connery Bond films. When the opportunity came around once again he seized it - if he didn't want the role, then why would he take it?. As for him not being able to relate to the character, context is key here. He said that he could not relate to the character in the way that Bond was being depicted at the time, on screen, during the Moore era. He said that he could not identify with a "Superman", i.e. Bond being indestructible, not facing genuine jeopardy, cracking jokes when faced with supposed danger etc. He was explaining how he would approach the role, how he would return the character to his roots, back to Fleming's Bond. As for Dalton being the worst Bond, in the worst films. That's your subjective opinion. You're entitled to it. I suppose it depends on what kind of Bond you want, a poser, a clown in an over-the-top adventure, or a serious, diligent Bond in a more grounded, gritty story.

The problem with most Bonds are the script. I liked the realism of LTK, just like I think Quantum of Solace is highly underrated. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was a great miniseries, the 'I'm going to blow up the world' Bond films just seem adolescent. Just like I think 'winter soldier' was about the best marvel movie. Connerys best was 'from russia with love'. Goldeneye was back to the craziness and I think almost all Brosnans films were like that, and I think he seems kind of pissed that he couldn't do the casino royale but got cheesy bond like roger. Moore's best I found was the Man with the Golden Gun, except for that horrible ending. Thats of course just my opinion.

Actually Alec Trevelyn was originally written to an older 00 agent and mentor to James Bond who turned rouge and heads a criminal organization. Alan Rickman, Anthony Hopkins the first choice and Jeremy Irons were considered for the role of Alec and they all turned down the role which Sean Bean was then offered the role and accepted. After Pierce Brosnan took over the role of Bond the script of Goldeneye was slightly changed but still had the darker tone to fit Daltons interpretation of the character.

When you list the gory, violent events in LTK (whipping, being vivisected or eaten alive, burned alive or blown up in a decompression chamber) it's pretty clear the producers went much too far in that direction for any Bond film. If their intent was to make darker films, they should have gone for psychological darkness- moral dilemmas, post-traumatic stress and such. Dalton would have shone in such a film.

Dalton actually makes a cameo in the highly underrated 1983 film: Never Say Never Again, in which Sean Connery reprises his role as Bond. Timothy appears in the casino scene at 17:51 in this review of the film attached. He is dressed as Bond. I never noticed this before despite have watched the film multiple times. Daniel Craig’s popularity as Bond owes a lot to Dalton’s earlier portrayal. They both, along with the also underrated George Lazenby played Bond with the dangerous edge as the character was intended in Ian Fleming’s novels. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c15BgHbGkw8.html

I've always liked Dalton (even before Bond, although I'd only seen him in about three films and the BBC TV adaption of 'Jane Eyre'). Connery had established Bond as a part in which sly humour and charm could co-exist with the rougher/colder aspects. I've read that Connery said Dalton "underestimated" the role in terms of "style". I don't agree. I think Dalton deliberately bypassed that in favor of an edgier, more narrowly focused characterisation. The problem is that audiences were used to the film version of Bond, in which the actors personality blended with the character. Dalton is a very private man, who doesn't bring his own personality to his performances. In that respect, I can understand why many people did not warm to his Bond. For me, he'll always be second behind Connery. Brosnan suffered due to his scripts not really deciding on a Bond characterisation, but otherwise Brosnan was an ideal choice to play the part.

I remember hearing Dalton was asked back for GoldenEye but chose not to come back. GoldenEye has that Dalton feel the way you mentioned Living Daylights had a bit of a Moore feel. GoldenEye's story would've been a perfect continuation for Dalton, whos two stories would've matched the post-Cold War themes and certain lines super well
@ΜακηςΛ-ε5ρ
@ΜακηςΛ-ε5ρ 3 года назад
Dalton - should have played in ''A View to a Kill''- was the right man after Moore. But he was unlucky, because he came to the end of the Cold War (a basic theme in Bond's script) and in the years 1990-1994 without a Bond film.

I always thought Timothy Dalton was extremely underrated as James Bond. I am not a fan of the Bond films per se, they were nowhere near as good as the books. I have all of the original Ian Fleming James Bond novels and the movies didn't really come close. The later Daniel Craig ones are a lot better and are at least great stories. Timothy Dalton though only did two and that is probably to his advantage, because there was no chance for him to get tired in the part and he was more serious in the part, which was the original intention of Fleming's character got. Two fine movies is better than a whole bunch that are no damn good. I have recently got dvd of The Living Daylights and I got Licence To Kill a while ago and both are well worth it.

I think Dalton was the only actor to actually read the books, the way he plays it is hard, authoritative, aggressive. I just wish he hadn’t softened it so much with the ladies (directors error). You’re correct, I agree that ‘License to kill’ was a great entry, certainly the best villain for me, actually plausible synopsis, well executed with one of the better theme tunes. Memorable, for me. Also, the Dalton films saw him suiting up as ‘sniper’ twice, this being a more realistic side to the job in question. I wished he’d done more, and place him third in my preference behind DC and SC tied. Interesting you should mention the titles, I know what you mean, ‘The World is not enough’ is an historic title of Flemings , first mentioned in the actual film ‘On her Majesties secret service’ ... it was depicted as the motto, in latin, from the heraldic coat of arms of ‘Sir Thomas Bond’. Sorry, i’m a complete nerd. “Orbis Non Sufficito”

I liked Dalton a lot and I was disappointed to hear he had been replaced by Pierce Brosnan, someone I thought was too clean cut to play Bond. Dalton reminded me of Lazenby, who I thought looked most like how I imagined Bond to look. The Living Daylights is still near the top of my favorite Bond films. The plot is more complicated than normal, yet the overall feeling is a bit more grounded that previous films. Due to the outbreak of AIDS, they toned down the whole sleeping-around aspect of Bond and I liked it better that way. Unlike popular opinion, I disliked License to Kill though. Many people prefer the gritty, down to earth, tone and I admit that, present day, that does have a lot going for it (I wish they had kept Daniel Craig films like that instead of getting sillier over time). However, back in the 1990s, films about drug lords and films about getting revenge were very common, so it made Bond seem less like Bond and more like every other movie. For me, it was very bland and unoriginal. I like it better now than I did back then. Had someone asked me in the 1990s, License to Kill would have been at the very bottom of the Bond barrel with Man With The Golden Gun. Now, particularly since a lot of the Bond films after it have been very bad in my opinion, License to Kill is somewhere in the middle. The Living Daylights is still in my top 5 though.

MOST of the websites that were ranking bond actors(which is almost a websites) placed Dalton at no. 3 Heck in my opinion he had an even bigger impact than Moore when it comes legacy-wise which is a pretty big thing considering Moore did 5 more movies than Dalton... So nah he ain't "forgotten"
