Hey guys I just came here to ask what role did the Fugitive Slave Act have on increasing tensions between north and south states, and how did it represent a turning point pushing the country closer to the Civil War? Thanks!
In increased tensions because Northern states didn't want slavery and Southern states did. The act made it so that now local law enforcement and civilians were forcibly meant to go and "apprehend" any slave who escaped to the North and deliver them to their owner. The North wasn't very fond of that idea because it turned their land into a hunting ground and basically legalized kidnapping. Some Northern state's response was to pass laws to make the fugitive slave act virtually unenforceable, and the South wasn't very fond of that idea because it meant their escaped slaves wouldn't be returned. Clearly tension there. I wouldn't exactly call it a turning point because it was inevitable anyway, but it pushed the country closer to war simply because the North didn't want slavery and the South did. You can't have it both ways.
