18:32 “I mean what person in their right mind would want to sit ‘round listening to Dylan Thomas droning on and on and on…” I do! I do! Ever heard of “The Caedmon Collection?” What an hollow worm, wriggling ‘round the apple of Dylan Thomas’ poetry. This “documentary” is a smorgasbord of poison pot-shots by ignoramuses and moralists.
Must say it, I despise this documentary and all those who have contributed to it. Hateful, spiteful, coarse, and cheap, it deserves its obscurity. However, Dylan Thomas’ words will live forever.
If you love the poetry of Dylan Thomas, and you fancy making your blood boil then watch this notorious piece of spite filled trash made by HTV Wales. It is packed with gossip and it sets out to destroy the reputation of Thomas as a poet and a human being. Apart from Paul Henry and Paul Ferris, the so-called "experts" are a pathetic collection of the dross academia, "all the half-poets, the boiled newspaper men, submen from the island of crabs" trying to pump their sad selves up by tearing down someone with actual talent, as Dylan Thomas could have put. There is some strange about the Welsh middle class character that hates success of any kind, and believes failure is something to celebrate. This attitude towards Dylan Thomas is dying very hard. And the Centenary celebration that put the drinking ahead of the poetry did not really help.
If Thomas were alive now, he'd be called out for his boorish behaviour instead of being celebrated as a genius. I disagree; I think this is an intelligent, well-made programme. We need more 'Tin Gods?' type shows.
I don't get the Welsh sense of humour. It's coarse without humour, tart without subtlety; and Dylan Thomas had bits of it. It is also quite spiteful. A hit piece was also done on R.S. Thomas, using the same laddish jokes, and crude sentiment.
