This is the first in a tribute to jazz legend Jimmy Forrest, and a subtle way to encourage you to purchase his music. In no way is this intended as piracy.
If there is such a thing as type-casting musicians, Jimmy Forrest is the poster man of that unfortunate stereotype. Jimmy Forrest is known, over known, way way over known, as the composer of the blues and strip club classic "Night Train". However, as the listener will quickly gather, Jimmy Forrest is one of the greatest jazz tenor players who ever lived. His playing combines excitement with softness and subtlety. He's from St. Louis, and from the testimony of people who regularly went to listen to him, he could blow the paint off the walls. The worst place for any other tenor player to be was standing next to Jimmy Forrest on the bandstand, as evidenced by the recording of him with Oliver Nelson and King Curtis. Those who've seen him said that he would not allow himself to be second in a competitive situation.
The rhythm section is soft and perfectly balanced, allowing all the soloists the maximum creative room. Please enjoy this, and please purchase and share the hidden treasure of this music.

Back in L.A. in the seventies, Jimmy worked the legendary Sunday nights at The Baked Potato with Harry "Sweets" Edison, Dolo Coker, Earl Palmer or Jimmy Smith on drums. Everybody hung there, Mr. "B", Sass, Hamp Hawes, Erroll Garner, Redd Foxx, EVERYONE! Those were some of the swinginest nights in L.A.

Loved hearing Jimmy with Sweets on Sunday nights at The Baked Potato in L.A. in the seventies. We all had so much fun with all the great music and jazz friends. Jimmy was with Basie, too. Sweet cat! Bhreat player.

Great to see Jimmy Forrest here. One of my very favorites, I've always loved his tone and his drive. I've heard that when he and Bird sat in Jay McShann's sax section, it was Forrest who always got the crowd worked up. His tenor/organ dates with Jack McDuff and Larry Young are my favorites of that whole genre.

Best version of this song. Even better than Dizzy. Jimmy Forrest is the most under-rated of the jazz sax greats

If you can find it, check out Tubby Hayes version, also!

Just saw your reply. Listened to Tubby. He's good, but no Jimmy Forrest!

He has a LOT of competish for the "most underrated" prize, which I personally would give to Lucky Thompson. But Forrest deserves to have his supporters, for sure. He is great and just about never gets his due.

@that1940sguy Out of the Forrest. Sometimes I can't believe how good this guy is. Most times, really. Well, all of the time, come to think of it.

The music is great, but there is some mistaken photographic identity here. The tenor player wearing shades and the light colored knit cap is Gene Ammons; and the fellow with the alto in his mouth and wearing the plaid suit is Hank Crawford!!

rskilbourne - I agree with your complaint but you are guilty of mistaken identity yourself, the first picture is indeed of Bud, but the second one is wonderful pianist George Cables. James Williams picture comes after that. And THEY don't look alike!

Great Track. WOW, he sounds a lot like DEXTER GORDON here! What album is this from? I'd like to buy it. Thanks.

I thought Oliver Nelson sounded great on "Soul Battle". I think the worst place a tenor player could stand, was next to "Trane", like on "Blowing Session", "Volume Two"...

More mistaken identity! Two of the pictures that supposedly show pianist Hugh Lawson are NOT pictures of Hugh Lawson. One is of Bud Powell, and the other is James Williams! What gives? These people don't even remotely resemble each other!
