Tinatin Japaridze specializes in the geopolitics and security of Eurasia, with a particular focus on the Russia-Ukraine war. She leads Eurasia Group’s coverage of Georgia and Azerbaijan, including the countries’ domestic and foreign policies, reforms, and leadership. Prior to joining Eurasia Group, Tinatin spent more than 15 years working at the intersection of communications and security. For several years, Tinatin was the UN Bureau Chief for Eastern European media outlets, a UN Radio host, and the producer of her own radio show on current affairs and international security. She is a regular media contributor to The Moscow Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic, among other outlets. Her book “Stalin’s Millennials: Nostalgia, Trauma, and Nationalism” was published in 2022.

Georgia on her mind, and in her heart ❤️ Tinatin Japaridze has an accomplished voice as a singer, and radio personality. But, I think the people of Georgia will remember her voice for her courage. The World must be reminded that Georgians have been waiting for help since 2008. Georgia is not only on Tinatin’s mind, Georgia is in her heart. Thank you, Jonathan…and a special thanks to Ms. Japaridze. Postscript: I read the book written by Ms. Japaridze entitled, “Stalin’s Milennials, Nostalgia, Trauma, and Nationalism”. It was a good read particularly with the current cult of personality in Russia, and a courtroom near you.

@PandemoniumMeltDown My point is the Georgian people have been electing and re-electing this Georgian Dream party in uncontested elections for over 10 years! A party backed by a Russian supported Oligarch...They knew full well what this party was about from day 1. They got the government and the policies they voted for. By the way, the real democrat who brought about the most Western, transparent changes and prosperity in the country's history, they threw in jail to rot. I say, let the Russians take back this little shithole of a country. BTW, I'm American and spent 4 years living in Tbilisi....I for one don't want to see a dollar more of my nor my family's US tax dollars spent on this place!

Ms Tinatin Japaridze regards the lack of leadership of the movement as a weakness. Actually I see it as a strength, because anyone who stands out as a leader will immediately be targeted by the government and other malign forces. It is the organic 'leaderless' nature that gives the movement its power.

I'm only 15 mins in but my impression is that other than Georgian Dream, the political spectrum has been extremely fractured and prior to these protests the electorate was apathetic and demobilised. Was this not the case? Because if it was, these policies have only weakened the dominant position of Georgian Dream in the political space. I believe the previous guest actually though that this had been a miscalculation of the opposition this policy would generate. Anyway, another great interview. Thank you both.

Thank you for the insights into the situation in Georgia - things are always more complex than they seem and that really helped explain the Georgian Dream party as a bit more than just a Russian proxy as some represent them. I hope that Georgia can pull back from authoritarianism.

so inspiring! Raising so much responsibility to nurse what they aspire for: Europe. It really IS a repetition of the reckognition of beautiful future aspiring and talented people, the very best, under attack of the very worst, medieval, cruel, incompetent, like the final discovery of Ukrainians and their spirit, like hopefully the discovery of Moldavians to follow. An amazing line of so well educated, intelligent and mature speakers, after Eto Buziashvili. It feels, as Europe would gain more from them as they from Europe. Ideal circumstances for mutual development to the better. We should keep that In mind. The Kremlin only and mainly aims to prevent that development to the better - that ALL including the Kremlin need.

Jonathan, thanks for speaking about Georgia. As a suggestion, it would be great if you could invite Nicolas Gorjestani who wrote a book about the first (so far, the last legitimate) president of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia overthrown by KGB inspired putsch - the event which has shaped past 32-year history of Georgia oppressed by Russia. This might help you to understand what is really going on in Georgia.

I think that's an important aspect that never gets mentioned whenever there's talk of people longing for the Soviet times again. My mother is one such person because unlike now "everyone was patriotic and working for the betterment of the country, unlike now when everyone is stealing everything they can". Meanwhile, in reality, everyone stole so much that the factory technically had guards patting down workers as their shifts were over due to rampant theft. But the guards were paid off - you just periodically gave them a little gift every now and then and all was cool. "But back then we could go vacationing twice a year!" - We can afford to do that now too, but she gets tired after walking 300 meters, because old age sucks.

33:00 "the foreign agents law came from the top / aka Putin" because it made no political sense... just in case there is a challenge. So it's a huge gamble / potential mistake that assumes the potential political benefits will be greater than the costs. This, even though Tinatin believes Georgian Dream was heading for a landslide win before these events. The whole things is just mad. Maybe overconfidence leads to missteps.

no, it's much..much more likely that the types of ppl who use hired goons to bust protests, are the same types who use the overall atmo of threats of state-sanctioned force against freedom-seeking ppl, to coerce enough ppl to not vote for the oppo or not vote at all. Similar is passively or indirectly being tried in a slow-roll in the U.S. since 2016, SOLELY by 'conservative' politicians-adjacent folks. And we yanks are thwarting it as best we can.

Russia has a history of having a class system of aristocrats and serfs. Is it wrong to think this mindset is reflected in how high Russian soldier casualties are? And does this also reflect in how Russia treats its neighbours? If so, in what ways? Georgia on my mind -song Tbilisi is a beautiful city. I heard a lot of people ride bicycles, which will make it feel like a village. It also reduces dependency on oil, which affects Russia. Georgian dream becomes a nightmare? It sounds like your guest is a member of the Georgian dream team, not the Georgian Dream Party.
