I’ve made a few of these with 1/4 inch copper tubing. I never thought about using half inch jute….. I like the idea. Thanks for putting it in my hat rack. I’ll be making a couple of these. You just earned one more subscriber 👍🏼👍🏼
Lol, Hello John. Thanks for watching and commenting! A bit of skipping is healthy but you didn't miss too many ingredients as it was just beeswax, paraffin and pine pitch.
you can also use any one of those if you do not have all three and get decent results . but the 3 makes it last longer . resin alone is good too and easier to do as a bushcraft project
Glad you liked it. I prefer this to traditional slow match and it was never really intended to be that. Traditional slow match is made with sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate. All that, near anything can be used as the tube/snuffer but this was just nicer looking IMO. I would really like to see what you come up with if you make one! Oh, shoot me an email with a way to get in touch with you irl, Connecticutbackcountry@gmail.com
That works perfect and There were a bit of overkill honestly but I do like having the extra space around the bottom as it moves back and forth easier and they looked cool.. we all know looking cool helps improve function, right? 😂😂 All the best, Gary.
This is a good video. Just one thing though... slow match is not a correct term for such a thing. A slow match is cord made of cotton, hemp, or linen which is soaked in a solution of water, carbon, and saltpeter, turning it into what is essentially a slow fuze.
Thank you for adding some info, you are right but it is an adaptation specific to fire making. I didn’t mention that as I’m not using it to strike off a cannon or musket. Since I neglected to mention that we can add here, It was also traditionally made with hemp and can be made with a Potassium nitrate solution as well as dissolved saltpeter and vinegar. I should have mentioned all of that I guess. Thank you for bringing it up and keeping me accurate! All the best, Gary.
Hello! You could just make slow match and use it instead. What I made is more of a candle type. So, to make slow match use a natural fiber based cordage. Mix 4grams of Potassium Nitrate with 100ml of water to a volume that will cover your cordage. Allow to soak for :45 mins. Remove the cordage from the solution and put it on a flat work surface. Now to break up the fibers a bit, beat it with a wooden mallet, not into submission! Then allow it to dry. When it is fully dry, it should take a spark and burn nice and slow. I believe Spektracide stump remover was, may still be, pure potassium nitrate. I hope this answers your question?
I must have given my other one away so I'll tell ya what, if you wanna make a $15 donation to my fundraiser hike up mount Washington I'll send you mine with a spare waxed piece of jute? be sure to leave a note that it's you and send me an email at ConnecticutBackcountry@gmail.com with an address where to send it.
