A few weeks ago I thought to myself that I'd like to teach the song Tingalayo to my kindergarten music class. But I can never just teach them a song, there always needs to be a deeper musical activity embedded in the songs we learn, but what would I teach through this song? I decided to play it loose, introduce the song in the first lesson and allow the students reaction to fuel what we'd learn in the following lessons. And what did I find after that first lesson? Kindergarteners love donkeys and they love patting fun rhythms to the song, but can they sing about the donkey and pat those rhythms at the same time??? Ok, maybe the kindergarteners can't, but I bet some of the 3rd graders can.
