Tintin GIANT Facsimile Editions: A Quick Look!

A short-and-sweet look at two ‘giant’ facsimile editions of Herge’s The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure. These massive hardcovers feature art-print-quality interior paper, heavy binding, and a reproduction of the original, more muted, colour palette. Published by Little Brown, the same publishers who bring out those smaller 3-in-1 Tintin editions.

First of all - sorry for the typo in the title card! Second, I don’t think these books were ever redrawn like the earlier ones were, and they were originally published in colour. So a comparison between editions comes down to the production for the most, hence the short video! I’d be interested in if you, the viewers, like these tiny videos, prefer the longer and more detailed ones, or would enjoy both! All comments welcome!

I only ever owned the two-part moon adventure in hardcover. Unrelated to the subject here---ie these "giant" editions----what is the general consensus as to the top, say, 5 Tintin books that you would recommend to someone like me who would like to acquire a small selection of this series. Not necessarily your favorites, but---as an expert about all of these books---what can you tell me are considered to be the top 5 books most Tintin fans would suggest? Or put another way, maybe, what 5 books do you think Tintin fans would most hold on to if they could only keep 5 of them (Here i'm just talking about the stories themselves, not how they are printed or special editions etc, just what are considered the best, most favored titles. Thank you so much for your presentations, and any thoughts you may have regarding my question!

@@ftloc Thank you kindly. I wonder if---as I've heard said----that Tintin never quite took off here in the States as elsewhere---is due to the fact that the US is so, uh, US-centric, while Tintin is so much about the rest of the wide, wide world? (Or maybe the Uncle Scrooge comics---which seem may've been inspired by Tintin---sorta filled that kind of comic adventure tale, though with more continuous humor?) I'd be curious to know what your thoughts might be/have been about the original adventures of Captain Marvel (the Fawcett comics version from the 40's, that is if you ever came across that character there)? Anyway, thank you so much. I'm looking into all of this as you suggest. Fun stuff. (On top of everything else with Tintin, that doggone little Snowy is utterly irresistible!)

I know what you mean; I always love shows that can mix stuff up as well. But personally, I am so poor at comedy (except for the unintentional kind), and find my attempts at it so lame and cringeworthy, that it all gets left on the the 'cutting room floor'. I hope to loosen up and care a little less the longer I do this!

I bought my first Tintin's in the 1970s when I was a child (a spanish-language edition) and the "large" albums were the regular albums. The small versions came much later, perhaps in the 1990s
@ftloc
@ftloc 2 года назад
I remember when the smaller, 3-in-1 editions first became visible in the 90's. Everyone I knew was outraged, haha! This facsimile here is much larger, of course, than the common Franco Belgian album size (the one I use to compare).

Having read all the Tintin's over the years from various UK printings it's a surprise to me that the backgrounds are watercolour-like in the facsimile editions. I had assumed that maybe we were getting bad reproductions and that the original colours were flat colour - but very happy to be proved wrong! : D
@ftloc
@ftloc 2 года назад
I hesitate to say that they are indeed watercolours and nothing else, but yes, there's definitely more 'texture' or variation in what I, too, had always seen as flat colours! Not at all overt, but definitely there

I look forward to your reviews of the regular-sized colour facsimiles sometime (relatively unchanged ones such as The Broken Ear and King Ottokar's Sceptre). Are those fascimiles similarly good for the muted colour palette and the book quality? Would you say they're worth chasing for someone who has the common standard editions of these adventures?

I was re-watching this video, and noticed one gripe I have with all the recent Tintin facsimiles - the digital lettering. I have some of the black and white facsimiles, and they have the same problem. Amidst the impressively faithful replication of the original art, this new digital lettering really stands out, and it made me question whether the publishers can truthfully call these facsimiles. It actually put me off getting the Blue Lotus B&W facsimile in the same haul (the stark difference in art being enough to distract me from the text in the others, but not so much in the Blue Lotus.) For the B&Ws, I wish they had retained the lettering style used in Egmont's edition of Soviets, and for the colour facsimiles, I wish they had stuck to the Hyslop hand-lettering that they used for decades in the English colour albums. This is something that wouldn't really bother me in most cases, but Herge's books are perhaps the only ones I obsess about enough to feel "ah damn, this is 95% there but not exactly a facsimile"! :D
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 года назад
I agree - I wish it was the Hyslop lettering; I would have loved that! The new lettering does stand out, unfortunately, I didn't notice it as much in the black and white ones (probably, as you say, I was distracted by the difference in art styles). Here, I'm just glad the larger size mitigates the thinner, 'italicized' look it has 😁

I’ve seen the compact editions, both in single story volumes as well as three in ones. That is indeed a very economical and compact way of owning the entire series. What is a "Facsimile" edition?
@ftloc
@ftloc Месяц назад
Basically, facsimile means 'exact copy', so even a photocopy of something could be called a facsimile. The context of editions, it generally means something made in the modern era but almost an exact copy of something older. So a facsimile edition may replicate the look and feel of the original/ first edition. I hope that helps!

Haha I know the feeling! But Hyslop's hand lettering was a later addition, and only to English translations, so I suppose they are saying this is more like a facsimile of the original French, which is what the new lettering is supposed to resemble - the French editions. I have written a short note on reddit r\TheAdventuresOfTintin today. Also you may want to check out Farshore publishing - seems they moved it to print in Romania away from China (glossy paper, and weird layered coloring) - the paper quality is noticeably more authentic i.e. matte paper with good printing. although not as thick as the older books.

I'd love to ask you - have you notived how the SOTU story doesn't really make sense?The bird brothers kidnap tintin with no real reason, max bird has had his wallet nicked, and there's no reason to suspect tintin. Also, they get the facts wrong, they say "the night we ransacked your flat, only the 3rd was found, in your wallet". But tintin doesn't get his wallet nicked until the next day, it clearly say "The next day". What on earth was going on?Invasions from the Germans?

I don't actually remember that line you quote - I will have to go back and refresh my memory. I'm not a big fan of that exposition dump by the younger brother; even as a kid I found it hilarious that his reaction was so "oh may as well tell you every single thing now!" 😁 But I have to say I love the pickpocket being involved in the story, I've always found that very satisfying!
