Hi! Emma from over 2 years in the future here! Just want to clear up some very common comments: Yup I figured out msg isn't bad for you hahaha This place was expensive, but definitely not the worst deal in Tokyo. Though at the time I had not many options due to my Australian working holiday visa! I now live in a larger apartment for much cheaper and live and work still in Tokyo :) The only thing I miss from this apartment is the cool sci fi toilet, and how quickly the place got warm in winter when I turned on the heater. This place was amazing short term, but the lack of sunlight, location, and size were a bit rough after 11 months haha It was a great experience living there and I learned a lot about myself and how to utilize space and appreciate what I have. If you want to see where I live now I have made plenty more videos during my time here in Japan :) Thanks for watching and enjoy the rest of your RU-vid browsing!
if I think harder I did feel uncomfortable too, Luke I imagined myself in there and even though I'd like to have my own space and live alone, still it feels like I couldn't breath well, so yeah...
Wow I'm sorry that it's made you all uncomfortable. I think I have the opposite, I quite enjoy small spaces, and have in fact dreamed of a bed in a closet, like that would be the epitome of comfort for me. So this was quite exciting for me to see.
My friend lives in more or less the same set up, but he doesn't have his own kitchen, and shares the bath room with 27 other peole. He actually gets paid to live there, but that is probably because it is on a attack submarine and he is a sailor.
My dear, you've got such a beautiful British accent and warm soft voice, do not apologize for that! Plus, you've been brilliant enough to turn that tiny gross place into a really cozy oasis with lovely plants and cute home ornaments, so do not care for stupid small talk...Just be yourself and be happy! 😃
.. okay you got me here b/c I relate to this entire sentence. Not only do I rather want freedom of living elsewhere [ I wanna move to Japan] But I LOVE sufficient, efficient tiny living....... but.. well, being 1000000% stuck hmmmmm
@@annedavis6090 I did some maths on this and your 570 ft is like 55 times the amount of space she has lmao. Also why the hell is your house so big?. Or is that the size of the land?.
@@vantilsley8633 friend you would laugh with me if you saw it. It's 2 small bedrooms, a medium bathroom, kitchen and front room ..it's 1/2 a duplex in a very old, well kept, historic Indiana town. It's considered small and it's perfect for one. I'm within walking distance of (historic) downtown and my lunchlady job at the (historic) highschool. It truly is small. I rent for $650.00 a month and it's all electric...good water, great landlord. I work with ladies who went to that same highschool with him 45 years ago... So yeah, ✨ it is pretty massive☺️ Peace to you and yours Van🕊️ Happy New Year
Same, completely random and not something I'd normally watch. Guess it's doing something right because I clicked on it lol. My bathroom is bigger than this apartment...
I half agree with you too like a small place but that place is a bit too small for a 6'2" guy i would feel cramped. I wish there was a house where i can put up walls myself to divide the house anyway i like and switch it up once in a while :) I would like a storage space for other stuff tho like tools.
Designing tiny houses is a bit of a hobby of mine, so I was kinda surprised that a Japanese apartment couldn't manage a bigger fridge. Obviously, I don't mean full-size, rather ones with a proper freezer compartment that are in between a normal fridge and a mini in size.
Agreed, it's like an adults treehouse. I personally wouldn't mind living like this in a western country and would have actually killed for it when I was staying at a student dorm than share a big kitchen, bathroom and washrooms with others.
Speak for yourself pal. I may live alone, but I needs my two living rooms (one formal, one family,) my four car garage, my dining room that can seat ten (even though I never have people over) the cathedral ceiling in my en-suite bathroom, and my jacuzzi tub that could easily accommodate four people.
it is small, that does not mean that it is efficient, the thing is there is a lot of space wasted in this "Appartment" i mean, the closet right from the door good be es high as the room and bigger, which would gain a lot of space, same over the Door perfect place for another closet, or even hanging stuff there because the roof from the bedroom is in reachable height. but yeah the Bathroom could not be more efficient, same for the Kitchen, both reminds me of Vanbuilds a saw and used ;) Still 100€/qm2 seems quite pricey even on a mountly contract including utility.... But yeah here in Munich it is also not cheap so i know that feeling to pay extra for a own small 20-30qm2 room for 800-1000€ over a similar sized room in a shared flat/house for 600, with other people you have to life together....
To a foreigner with a big body because it is so narrow, it looks small. But I live well. The house is large, but the interior has not been able to devise anything
I suggest putting planks across those two metal bars as a shelf and use part of ceiling area bit of storage. Maybe get a couple of wicker baskets to hid your stuff in it.
Yeah, i like to raise my arms up in the middle of that space! So i'm trying to keep it as open as possible. But that is a good idea for extra storage! I guess i'll just have to not buy more stuff haha
It's so small. that hidden toilet, that small fridge. oh wow.. I love it!! If I had a choice I want 2 extra square meter or more just to fit a washer and full size (fridge)
The place looks actually pretty cozy and I'm impressed by the amount of stuff one can fit into an apartment this tiny. The only thing holding me back from actually wanting something like that (apart from the price) is the fact that I own WAY too many books and I wouldn't want to part from almost all of them
if you really want place like that you could probably fit bookshelf in the loft level... just move matress a little from the wall and on the whole lenght you could squeez really shallow shelves ;) and big books under the desk or in the genkan you could have shelves above the shoe shelves XD
Hi! This video showed up in my feed this morning, and I wasn’t sure why... then, I watched your video. You are a breath of fresh air and very down to earth and relatable, which is why your video was so enjoyable. No frills, just you giving an honest tour of your apartment in Japan, and sharing the few small side stories (like the drain), it really made the whole video relatable. Loved it. Subscribed, keep them coming. It also makes us Westerners realize how much we take for granted, in that the Japanese are the epitome of efficiency and compact design. My own home is 2100 square feet, and I am filled with useless collectibles and electronics that I never use. Just more to dust and clean. Your apartment is so efficient and has all anyone would really ever need. Great job.
I would put up with the tiny space if i could find a safe affordable place to live in Toyko or any other mega city. Not being able to invite friends into your home would be a bummer though!
@@happydon999 I could live in a coffin like that for the single month the contract is good for. It's probably only a month long precisely for that reason: Nobody's meant to live in a tiny space like that for extended periods of time. Of course during that month I'd only be there to sleep and occasionally eat, otherwise I would be sightseeing. A couple of hours working on a computer would also be tolerable.
Saakshi Puri Bhatia well, for most people apparently, they like tiny spaces like this. Plus, it's very manageable, easy to clean, and actually makes you learn how to split the use of your allowance in buying groceries (look at that tiny fridge! lol it's cute) to the money that goes to the bills.
They make smaller things, like special tape and wall siding too if she felt like separating all the cords. Just think how maybe everything will be wireless in 20 years...
I like your little plant ball. And I actually really like this house even tho it's small it seems cozy and cute and I really like the way you have decorated it. But I can imagine it would get kinda frustrating
☆Imperials☆ Ik!! I watched that video the other day and I wanted to see how it compares to this video but I'm happy for her that she finally has some space to live in
I did exactly the same thing, I was working on an email and suddenly we're talking about Enter Shikari. Almost got whiplash snapping over to the tab. Hope you enjoy the show!
I live in London. I pay £507 per month for a room quite big for my self and with a small patio-space as big as that entrance/kitchen. I share a big kitchen and bathroom... really, people complain about the prices in London. I simply CAN'T.
Lol. No reason to argue. I agree with you. Eventually I will move out of London, but right now, I want to enjoy the Town a little bit more: lots of art galleries around, lots of culture events... that's the most interesting part of London for me.
Apartments in Germany are mostly quit cheap in fact to other countrys... for around 70m² you pay around 500-750€ and around 600-800€ in the centre of citys like Berlin or Cologn so it is quit cheaper than a 500€ apartmanet with 8m² in Tokyo or a 450€ room in London xD
Medina Music I live about forty miles outside London in Kent. I've just got on the property ladder after years and years. My mortgage is £615 a month for a small detached bungalow with a good size back garden and small front garden. Five hundred odd quid for a room in a house is a lot of money!
I'm 6'3, or 190cm and have very wide shoulders. This ''apartment'' gives me nightmares, and I'm not even claustrophobic. Like living in a match box or something.
That outro is the best thing I've ever seen. I love your videos! I stumbled across your RU-vid not too long ago and it has quickly become one of my favorites. You're such a positive light! To be honest, I'm going through a really rough patch in my life and watching your videos has given me something to look forward to. They always cheer me up. Thank you for being so quirky and adorable 💖
AWWWWWW i woke up this morning and read this message and you have energised me for the day!! I hope life starts to be kinder to you soon, it can feel awful when things get rough. Sending a bunch of love your way and positive vibes too! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes! Tokyo life is so busy I am always happy to come home to my tiny apartment ^^ it is such a relaxing space because i spend so much time out and about!
holy hell. just my bedroom is 15 sq meters. and that's small for me. my bedroom before was 35 sq meters. which was ridiculously huge. but everything in 8? i would suffocate and die.
I feel you a lot cause I live in a very tiny apartment in Tokyo too It's amazing that you managed the tiny little space so well, better that I do lol. So many air plants so cute💖 You are very wise to realize that your living space and your sleeping space should separate, but I didn't and I got my fridge next to my bed and I have been thinking I want a complete "self" space Thanks for the share it's really inspiring!
10:33 LOL That's Spanish Moss! ...Which... oddly enough is neither Spanish... nor moss... hmm. I nearly spit out my coffee when I saw it hanging on your wall, because, where I live, it grows on EVERYTHING, harbors bugs like lice, chiggers and spiders and is generally regarded as dirty. It's not something we like to even touch let alone bring indoors so when I saw you proudly growing it indoors and worrying over it's health, I had quite a good chuckle. LOL I'm positive that your Spanish Moss is clean, though, and it looks SUPER healthy - the brown center is normal - it will do that as the outside mass increases. And, bonus, I'm pretty sure it cleans the air to some extent! Thank you for renewing my appreciation for this funny-looking friend! Oh, and love the apartment too!
I love your personality, and the way you described things in your apartment. Especially in the bathroom, I never would have guessed where the toilet was, lol. It's actually not a bad place, and you have it fixed up cute.
dang..that's expensive to me considering the size of that place, but it makes sense in the context of the urban location (since Tokyo is a big city it'd be expensive to live in). It's just a culture shock to me how differently people live there.
It's super shit right now. To a depressing extent. It's pretty bad out there. You got groups of young Japanese from 20 to 30 years old living 10 to 20 in one apt because they can't afford anything and can't find any good jobs. Then the jobs they find they are forced to work double shift on a lot of occasions and don't get paid for all of it under the threat of getting fired. There are hundreds of people that are from their early 20's all the way to 50 years old that are homeless and live in the street in tents. It's pretty sad. Japan is one of the countries with the highest percentage of kids committing suicide because of all the pressure their culture and upbringing puts on them. No country is perfect. Especially the united states. So I say this not with hate but with regret and sadness. I always wanted to go to Japan. But, after I saw all the recent documentaries exposing all of this stuff. It made me decide that I am not going to go there until they start changing habits and the government starts regulating businesses more. Corporations and business practices in Japan are out of control. China is another country I will not visit after all the atrocities they do against their own people. Until they fix these things I will sadly never step foot in those countries. Even tho i wanted to go ever since I was a small child.
I would freak out in there...I admire your ability to not only live very simply, but to be enclosed in such a tiny space and not freak out about it. :)
No worries on the price. Out here in Amsterdam one only get a fraternity room for that price. That price than excludes wifi, water, gas etc. Sounds like a fair price. Especially in Japan, which is not know for being cheap.
Enter Shikari?? You have some good music taste. I really like the bedroom portion of the place. It looks so cozy. I felt content just watching you lay there honestly haha. Cute little place. I like it. :p
Love the idea of a workstay in Japan / tiny home in general. But as a 6'2 guy, seeing you sit snug from wall to wall, in that floor chair. My legs are already aching!
Imaginably, if you like it, that's all that matters. Having lived in Japan, I probably wouldn't enjoy a space that small, but I lived in Kochi, which as you may know is far more rural (meaning, there were fewer issues finding places to stay, which were larger). My first apartment in Japan was ~$50.00 USD a month without utilities. I enjoyed all aspects of it, excepting the drive (about 1 hour - 1.25 hours) to the city, and that we didn't have a train that ran into the town. Because of this, I had a bit of trouble getting friends up there, and vice versa, so unless things were planned so that there was a place to stay, there weren't many visitors (I could have done better on this one). My second apartment was $500.00 a month without utilities, and for a while, I was paying for two apartments (in part because the first one was not too expensive and much closer to work, while the other was far closer to the city). The woman I was dating at the time wanted to get an apartment, with me, and I didn't mind the idea of living closer to the city, since I spent A Lot of time in the city around the weekends. Alternatively, prior to getting that second apartment, after the long sober drive from spending time with friends in the city, I would occasionally forget to turn on my light outside of my apartment, and be Very pleased with the number of stars above my head. More than once, spending a good half an hour or more, since where I am living now has about 1/50th of the stars (or less) visible in the sky. The third place I was living in Japan, cost us (at this point married) 44400 yen a month, which wasn't as bad, but was challenging when it came to maintaining everything I was attempting to, and paying off my student loans in the US. I ended up moving home in hopes to pay them off and get my then burgeoning family into a good situation where we would eventually be based in both the US, and Japan, for a duration of each year. That, unfortunately fell through, and the complications and details of that have left me more incensed and irritated than ghost peppers will a common person's mouth. Generally though, whether it's called The Golden Rule, or Karma, it will all workout, and imaginably VERY much so in my favor -- as I don't believe there is any rational reason for all of the suffering I've been through over the past 5+ years. But hey, if you're interested in an invention, let me know, or I'll consider selling or donating 50% of my works to China, so as to make up for the damages done by supposed "countrymen," etc -- those fucking traitorous whores. That got dark. I'll stop. Have a good one.
Taylor James Here in Serbia, you can get like 30-50m2 apartment for 500 euros. For 700 you get a 2 floor apartment 65-70m2 in nice hood. (Im talking about capital,Belgrade) And if you go to smaller cities you can find flat for like 150-200 euros. But houses here are deal, around 60k euros for 250m2 one(3 story) and 300m2 of land(including house)
I’ve always loved really small living spaces like this, they just seem so cozy to me. Before I was married I really wanted to live on my own in a little place like this, tbh I’m kind of sad I never got the chance to! I guess the closest thing I could manage now that I live with another person would be a tiny house, which I do like the idea of.
Wow I would be so claustrophobic every single second not even being able to sit up in bed wow omg. I’ve never been so grateful for my small apartment before that now seems huge compared to yours 😂😂 thank you for making me appreciate my life😂
this is still much larger than my college dorm, it was smaller than a prison cell, no bath no storage no shower, just a bed, a desk, and a table, lived there for 4 years.
Here in Eastern USA. We got those flies. Bleach and frequently cleaning works. Yes. Apartment living is tight. I've done it for a long time. You seem like you made the most of what you have. I like your positive attitude.
I think its pretty amazing and sweet, absolutely quaint too, if your opinions are negative and your preferences are shite, than don't say anything at all.
Yeah to put that in perspective I lived in a studio apartment *14 years ago* when I was 18 (omg I keep thinking I'm doing the math wrong haha) it was tiny (I think my current master bedroom is bigger) for $500/month and I paid utilities (no internet and cable back then it wasn't a thing to prioritize, so weird lol). So I'm sure it's at least $700-$800 by current times.
Hello .... I just wanted to tell you if you go on Pinterest or RU-vid and search DYI wire hideing boxes ... Most ppl use a shoebox and decorate it up and you cut holes where you need the wires to come out but you put the bulk of the wires inside the box hiden away amd you just stand the box up against the wall and your wires are gone 😊🤗
12:04 there is no proof that msg is bad for you. In fact, the people who discovered msg found it in seaweed (that's why people like seaweed, it has msg in it) so if you say msg is bad for you, then you are also saying seaweed is bad for you!
+EelKat Wendy C. Allen a lot of people may claim to be allergic to it, but many scientists believe it is just placebo. They even did tests where they told people that there was msg in something that didn't have it, and when those people ate it, they reacted even though there wasn't any msg in the food. The real question is: are you allergic to seaweed? Because that is the natural source of msg. And did you hear about its "negative side effects" before or after you knew you were allergic?
There are scientific studies that have found MSG to be bad for you, so yes, there is proof. www.foodrenegade.com/msg-dangerous-science/ And isolating a chemical found in a natural substance and producing it in mass quantities to then add to other food is very different from eating the natural substance which it originally occurred in, mostly because it's in much smaller amounts, and sometimes other chemicals found in those naturally occurring substances help to mitigate the what would be harmful effects of consuming it. This is the entire idea behind eating whole, unprocessed foods.
Good price for the apartment. Helps if you are really short. I Like the patio. Felt like I couldn't breathe from claustrophobia a few times in watching your video, and I love your bathroom/sink/shower combo. Wow.
The tray in your oven - not sure on the steps, but lemon juice and bi-carb soda will clean that tray no probs. Pretty sure you cover it with bi-carb when it's hot and throw the lemon juice on top after a couple minutes, then scrub up. That letter drawer is my favourite drawer. Everything there becomes a forgotten relic until someones asks about it and then it's upended in a frantic attempt at locating that one letter. It's exciting. I'm terrible at plants. I got a Chlorophytum and even though he's a hardy dude, he has a sensitive heart. His kids are doing fine though so he's a good dad. I think he's proud. You're pretty chill so he'd like you a lot. Edited because I commented too early and wanted to say more stuff.
I never would think of hydrogen peroxide. I have used baking soda and lemon and baking soda and vinegar-the results have been okay, but a lot of hard scrubbing on difficult areas. I need something that works better-I'm getting tired.
To clean up the oven tray: 1. make a paste on the watery side with baking soda and pure squeezed lemon juice (or white vinegar) and coat the dirty pan in it, let it sink in for a few minutes. 2. ball up some aluminum foil and use it to scrub it clean. This also works great on iron cast pans and any other pot/pan/tray where stuff sticks. you can optionally add a bit of hot water, dish soap and coarse salt, but generally, baking soda and lemon and a good scrub is enough. (Note: never scrub with foil any teflon coated pots and pans or it will scratch off the non-stick coating) Also, once you've cleaned up the tray and all the stains are gone, cover the tray in aluminum foil or a baking sheet every time you use to make clean up easier. PS: I love your apartment! I actually find it quite cozy for just 1 person. The rent is pretty nice too.
Mary Anne Brown Its amazing. YOu can make a paste and let it soak on something vertical or with crevasses. once soaked, the dirt just wipes away.. I have arthritis in my hands and seriously I DONT scrub anything anymore because of using this method... If all doesnt come off the first time- soak with more for longer and it will work... joy to you..
Hi. I had one of those where the arms could not be stretched. I started gaining weight rapidly when I came to Japan. My grand mom told me to exercise in the apartment since work days were super long with the commutes but I didn’t have money for the sports center and often got back too late anyway. The neighborhood was all buildings though on an off day I could walk a few kilometers over to a park with greenery, however I was so tired that I usually slept on any off time. Finally, I understood the Japanese answer “sleeping” when asked about hobbies. Anyway, my grand mom did not at all understand when I said there was no room to do stretches much less anything much. Your bars would have come in handy to exercise the arm muscles. Grand-mom seriously did not believe that the apartment was so small. Now I can show people your video, that this is what I meant when I said there was no room to do anything! Thanks for sharing your video.
once in a while i come back here to watch this and others of emmas videos and everytime i do so i am amazed of how much emma has grown since then. here she seems so french to me but she‘s much more australian now somehow 🤷♂️
hey i ave an idea for those cords you can twirl them around each other a bit then use a colored tape to tape them together but leave enough room for it to be able to be plugged in and actually charge multiple thing at a time and for the tape you can use any color tape and even make a rainbow and if the rainbow thing is the colors you choose you can kinda tape them before you twist them and make a rainbow then use clear tape to hold them together :3
This is the smallest apartment room I've ever seen and I'm from Tokyo! I also live in Tokyo, Ican do yoga or cartwheel in my bedroom and I have a kitchen&bathroom and a balcony on my own and it costs $700 per month. Not bad I'd say.
At first I was like "cool, tiny apartment", then as she started touring it, I started thinking about all the shit I have and I was like damn I could never live like that. I'm not too keen on not hoarding stuff/decluttering and I have a ton of stuff that I deem "necessary" (aka food, makeup, clothes)
670$? For this amount I get an ultra modern 3-4 rooms apart in Bucharest! This room is smaller than my bathroom and incredibly expensive! I guess its a lot better to live in Europe than Japan.
Air plants need moisture like all plants but in tiny amounts. Just give it a quick spritz every so often, maybe once a week. It should start looking better, but the brown bits won’t get green. You can trim off any straggly bits of the dead foliage that are hanging off.
