Doxie's need at least 1 hour of combined exercise a day and a chance to use their nose and hunting instincts. So several 15-20 minute walks a day and some sort of play mat do WONDERS for them. They are protective, so 1 or 2 quick alert barks when there's a knock at the door is normal but then you need to acknowledge the dog and center them. My Doxie is 5 years old and is just about the kindest, most friendly boy you'll meet because he gets those walks in and he was socialized with dogs, cats, kids, and strangers from the very start.

I'd like to see some techniques for solo people who don't have a lot of people around to practice certain techniques with. You can't expect a stranger on a walk or a quick delivery man to entertain your dog training. I've adapted some things, but some are just tricky to sort out solo. I'd love to see a series on this if you have any tips.

You could aim more to focus the dog on yourself in those situations, rather than another. When you pass someone or know the mail is coming, look at your dog and use the trained code word, like “friend”, and give a treat. You can even set a limit on how close to the door they can come with a word like ‘stop’, and treat when they do it. Train without the stress source first, then introduce the idea to the dog that the stress source sets off the good treat time game.
@junbh2
@junbh2 2 года назад
You don't need the delivery person to pay attention to your dog. In fact for many dogs it works better to teach the dog to look at you when it sees a stranger (or anything that tends to stress it out). You can find some easy 'mini' version of whatever the dog finds difficult, e.g., a strange man but far away, and practice getting the dog to calmly look at you whenever you get near(er) the stranger. Don't make it too hard, baby steps. In time you can make it a little harder bit by bit. But a dog that pays attention to you when it's around strangers (or noisy things or whatever) is super good to have.

Getting rid of the doggy's jewels would also probably help with some of the aggression issues.
@Lynnsayshi
@Lynnsayshi 2 года назад
That’s actually a myth. Most behavioral issues don’t stop when a dog is fixed because behaviors are learned and don’t change just because they have their reproductive parts removed.
@Fuzzysea693
@Fuzzysea693 2 года назад
@@Lynnsayshi it would help a lot with decreasing the aggression alongside the training. I notice a huge behavioral difference in fixed dogs than intact ones.
@kiddykat
@kiddykat 2 года назад
@@Fuzzysea693 eh varies a lot If the behaviour is rooted in anxiety then neutering can actually make it far worse You can test this by using chemical castration with a male dog, then if the behaviour improves? Fine neuter the dog, if it doesn't change then why put them through surgery, at least until fully mature? And if it gets worse? You know they need the testosterone and you need to work on confidence building and trust training.
@deidrebetts2936
@deidrebetts2936 2 года назад
It is true, neutering will help. Imagine having all that pent up frustration of wanting to mate (which he did, with one of the other dachshunds because they aren't spayed) and not being able to. Plus, in another video, it was revealed one of the female dachshund went into heat and all the other male dogs were, of course, very interested in her (but they're fixed!) and it caused Oscar to get aggressive and territorial with them. He does get neutered after Victoria left, though!

The former owner kept her outside so she didn’t want to go inside my house the first day I got her and now she’s spoiled. She sleeps by me and under the covers. She plays catch me if you can still bring skittish of putting harnesses on and reliable recall like a puppy playing. I got her last November at almost 2. She’s very smart and very pretty. This one has such an attitude in the beginning lol. I’m like dang! My dog barks but at a distance. She won’t go far from me either. She has separation anxiety which I’m working on some. My standard longhaired LOVES people. But-- he can pick out the sketchy person in a crowd in a heartbeat and time has proved him right in every instance. There were a couple boys he tried to chase away from his favorite kids, too. One eventually tried burning down fences all over the neighborhood. He is an evcellent judge of character. Older sis and I live together. Every time we have someone come to give an estimate on a repair or improvement Buddy's input is important. He's picked some great companies! Yesterday was our 8th anniversary. I opened my front door and he walked in like he belonged there. The charmer had been dumped. He was young but grown with very nice manners. 30 days later he was chipped, tagged and all mine. I"ve had some rough years but Buddy got me through them. He makes me laugh every day. And cuddles!! Oh, my golly! He's the cuddliest dog I've ever had. I knew nothing about dachshunds. He's different than my bigger dogs were so I had a lot to learn. He was very patient while he was training me, tho. I am so grateful he found me. I needed him.

This dog bit 10 people, even causing someone to bleed, and the owner is worried that he'll "really hurt someone someday"...woman, he already has. It kills me that little dogs are allowed to get away with that crap when big dogs are treated differently after 1 bite (yes, I know that a big dog does more damage). Little dogs simply get more slack, which I find ridiculous. Our little dog snapped at someone once (it ended up being a medical reason) and we got a behavioral dog trainer right away. I was wondering why those teens looked like they came out of 2007/2008 and thought this was a new show until I looked it up and found out this was released in 2005 to 2008, not 2021. o_o

I thought that if a dog bite 3 times they are euthanized. 1st offense is a 3 day quarantine, 2nd offense is a week, 3rd strike the dog is euthanized. Was that changed?

The person who is bitten has to make on official complaint first. It needs to be on record.

Dogs are more important than people now. They shouldn't be but apparently society doesn't care about children getting mauled. Double digit bite count is insane. It should have been put down long before this. There's no garantee it won't bite again. It looks nice on tv but imagine having to train the dog like this constantly. You won't be able to have a decent conversation with people while having to do this and when you stop giving the dog treats, it's very likely to bite again.

If it's never reported and investigated by the county it's like it never happened. A person who is bitten needs to make an official complaint, get as much info about the owner as they can, take photos of the bite and see a Dr. for proof of treatment. That way a record is established for the next person who is bitten and/or for a small claims lawsuit for any damages.

It does need to be reported. and small dog bites are usually not damaging and not reported. the reason we think of big dogs as more dangerous (i mean, they are) is because of the size and ability to do damage. small dog bites can do damage. but not nearly as much. and are more easily shrugged off.
