MANY thanks to all our amazing patrons, bit.ly/BB-Patreon, that really go above and help make these videos possible.
Ep 145
A couple of weeks ago we made a last minute decision to sail to Statia. This hidden gem never made it on our list of islands that we would sail to while in the Eastern Caribbean, we honestly didn’t know it existed. So as you can imagine, we hadn’t done much research on what there was to see or do here.
Statia is 8.1 square miles and could fit inside Disney World 5 times. So we were surprised to find out that it’s home to more historical artifacts per square meter than any other country in the world. And when you are walking around town you can see it EVERYWHERE, even down to finding artifacts along our morning walks.

Great video, one correction though. Planters on other islands also allowed the enslaved to keep provision grounds. This enabled the planters to save money on providing food for the enslaved.

I loved the history of the armoury! Especially the details about the stone and build. ESP that you pointed out the straight wall! Nothing like a square, plumb line! Lol. Ps- there was a 40 min ad on here. Sorry guys, I’ll put it on when I’m sleeping!

Moats are used as sewers. If your wounds don't kill you, the infection will. Archers would also stand arrows in buckets of effluent or do their business in the ground where they are stood, they would then stick their arrows in the ground where they had all used it as a toilet. If you got hit by such an arrow and it didn't kill you, eventually the infection would.

Awesome "Top Chef" flip of that tomato in the beginning whoever that was! Couldn't tell by the thumb I was able to glimpse since you both have short nails. I'm going to guess Brandy, although it strikes me as more of a Beau thing to do.. Ha Ha & speaking of Beau things to do no judgment here for licking those plates brother! My question is who wouldn't? Egg yolks with tomato & bacon juice, are you kidding me? Bottle it & we're rich! (My idea partners!) 😁 Finally, I absolutely love that you've discovered this hidden gem, yet I hope it stays "hidden" from the masses. It's always the places off the trail that are best in my experience & my opinion.. I have an idea/theory for that adorable little archeology chick. It'll be more easily obtainable than Ground Penetrating Radar to trace that possible tunnel down to an entrance. They could try a Thermal sensing device. From a cheap one that just displays the temperature, to a camera that shows you the temps in color mounted on a drone, & anything in between would work. The theory being that precisely at the evening crepuscular hours (dusk) the surface temp of the "roof" of said cave or cavity would cool much quicker than the solid earth to either side, & one could follow the "cooler dirt" to a point on a hill where an entrance may have collapsed long ago. I think after sun set would be best in areas that are open, but if it leads to shaded areas, they might be more difficult at this time, & may be best checked during the hottest time of day.. The easiest tool to use on this would be a drone, & the best priced one right now in the US is the Anafi Thermal (drone) for $1,900. on ebay. I've been tempted for a few months to pull that trigger, just haven't. Although I could easily be swayed if I thought having one might get my presence requested out of this pit we call Upstate NY, & on that hidden gem aka Statia forevermore...😂😂 Only half joking btw! I do have many talents, skills & an adaptable knowledge base that I'm sure The Shipwreck Survey people or someone there would find to be very productive & helpful! I've even been nick-named "Joe I. Know" because of it.. Just sayin in case the right person is here reading this..😉 Sorry this is so long, guess I couldn't find a more concise way to articulate everything I wanted to say.. It happens. It was actually nice to have so much to say & check in with you guys again, as many times although I enjoy seeing what you're up to, I don't feel I have anything to offer that might add to the conversation or the experience. 😎👍

@joesmania 3 года назад
@@bellaangus1213 Well thank you so much for your reply Mel!! I was in the Deep South Region of Georgia for around a year, around 15 years ago. First outside of Douglas, then in Fitzgerald for a little bit, then more toward the coast in Ludowici. That part of the State was interesting at first because of the newness, but I quickly missed having variety of terrain & plant life. At one point shortly before heading back here to NY I went with a friend to visit their family in Northern GA. I was shocked to see trees other than Pines, & hills & mountains.. It was beautiful! It was just a day trip, a long time ago, & I don't recall the name of a town or county, but after a year of flat ground & Pine trees, I sure did appreciate the unexpected change in variety that day.. If the whole State was like that, I may have stayed longer.. although I was too alone there, so maybe not that much longer. I did like their laws & things like that a lot better there. The people were nice. At least on the surface it seemed so.. What's it like where you are? I mean are you rural, semi-rural, or urban? Farms & fields, or forest & lakes? What industry is the immediate local economy based on? Things like that..

Very nice... The slow-moe of the beach, perfect for our soul. Now the most, matress, really, just burn it!!! Oh well.. Guess whale, or whatever they used, oil was not around.. Wow, lot of cars for such a small island. Would have thought more bikes, motor and peddle type. Place must have a big port. Been to St. Kitts, didn't know of this place. Think Jimmy Buffet reference it in some songs.. Nice find. On other questions, do you guys have time limits to how long one can stay in a port? They charge you to anchor on these stops? If so, guessing it's a whole lot cheaper than a night's stay. I get the traveling by boat from place to place, just the cost of staying vs air traveling as a visitor. Keep up the great job of keeping us educated on these remote island's. Makes us all want to travel again. PS, no masks required???

In case Ruud, Alex and the SECAR folks are reading these comments, please note that the "winged hourglass" is not an historically Jewish symbol for "an early death." This "time flies" or "tempus fugit" symbol origins are unclear but became popular in the late 17th century and appeared on gravestones all over Europe and even on the flags of several pirates. The Jewish grave symbol for someone who died young is a tree trunk cut low.

I was able to see a video about Barbuda and its effect on the Carolina's of the U.S. and I wouldn't be surprised that Sugar Cane was grown all around Barbuda, including Statia. It was pretty much the first crop and everything goes back to those time, very wealthy times. The oldest mansions, and some interesting movable little houses, used by slaves at first. So at 20:27 that looks like immature sugar cane maybe ?
