Spot on. I noticed this too. I didn't like it. The trailer and the beginning of the show clearly make Neveah the main character but after a few episodes she just sort of fades away and is only really there to fix a problem. Bette was pretty much the main character.
A lot of this. Great to see a black female lead (particularly given the context of ballet) ... just for her to be a supporting character in her own show. Race wasn’t a prop until they wrote it as one. *sigh*
I felt she was so badly portrayed and had potential but ended up being swept under the bus- I couldn’t keep up with who was the actual main character by the end! Not to mention the character was so unlikeable (probably just badly acted idk).. I really wanted to like her because obviously the intent is right but it was badly executed
i agree with the relationships. they were all rushed and poorly developed. like why is oren saying I love you to neveah when they only started talking like two episodes ago??? they're relationship had potential but i feel like it was TOO soon. plus oren is even in the right mentality to be in a relationship due to his eating disorder.
Orens eating disorder and battle with sexuality too. And I completely agree. Especially with Nabil they had him jump from relationship to relationship with no good explanation or essence behind it. First Cassie, okay whatever they were together. But he has equally enraged about her possibility of cheating? But still loves her madly and massages her everyday at the hospital even though they were only together 3 months prior to her fall. Then income Neveah, they were okay, but he decides no for Cassie, again with the obsession and anger then all of a sudden so last minute he's in love with June? And they didn't even build it up properly there was no chemistry between them. They should have left him single or with Neveah or Cassia. June was so random and rushed.
I felt that Neveah's girl power vibe was very inconsistent. At first, she seems kind of innocent and not really ready for the school's drama, then she's all badass and "get out of my way" with Bette, and then she's crying on the phone to her brother that she doesn't fit in, all within the first episode (if not the first day). Plus, she was supposed to replace Cassie the It Girl and everyone made a big deal out of her arrival, but then she's never even considered for a solo. The competition ends up being between Bette and June, and Neveah never complains about it. Wasn't she supposed to be the new star of the school? Honestly, we can rip apart the stiff acting, but at least 75% of it is because of bad writing. This show didn't know what it wanted to be and it just threw everything but the kitchen sink at us, hoping something would stick.
it’s a little weird how many sex scenes there are in this show considering the fact we as an audience are supposed to be seeing these people as 16 and 17 year olds.

yeah the writing of this show was a mess :/ it seemed to me like it was trying too hard to be a edgy instead of its own thing, and the end result just made it lack substance. the book had so much good material for the writers to use as inspiration! also those dream sequences were soooo cringey

The show seems to be written by middle aged people who think they know how teenagers talk and act and they wrote the script to try to appease to teenagers which is why adults in the show say things like, "Dont you think Monique should be cAnCelLeD". I cringed so hard it gave me Riverdale Deja Vu.

Why did no one find it strange that this prestigious ballet school only has ONE instructor who does everything from choreo to production and chooses the students. So if he hates you, you don't have a future In the school.
It's Netflix. They can't seem to fathom that shows can be successful or good without the softcore porn, and can actually HINDER the piece when there's too much. Their obsession with this has also ended up turning their adaptations of kids/Y-7 rating properties into "dark", "adult" shows aged-up characters (that were children in the original source material) and sex/drugs involved. In my opinion, of the students, Shane is easily the hardest to root for. I might have liked him had he not sexually assaulted Oren early on in the show. Feels like a double standard to have an entire subplot about the girls at the school being forced into a trafficking ring and then never address the fact that Oren told Shane no, and looked visibly uncomfortable and terrified when Shane preceded. While I found Oren to be rather boring as a character, I couldn't help but feel bad for him because he is consistently put in sexual situations he obviously doesn't want to be in with both Shane and Bette (the scene where she attempts a threesome), and the show moves forward acting like these things wouldn't have a major impact on him. The show has the characters do terrible things and then never holds any of them accountable.
And then Shane had the audacity to be upset when Oren wanted to be a good boyfriend and end their toxic “ relationship “ with each other. It’s not okay when straight people SA someone so don’t make it okay for other sexualities either. That whole subplot in the show pissed me off because someone in my family can personally relate to shit like that 😒
I think the show had a lot of potential and had interesting storylines, the only reason it was bad was because it was poorly executed and felt rushed/forced. The dancers were phenomenal and they had some beautiful dances but they could have worked more on the acting, I know they are not actors but they could have done better. The writing of the show needs to flow, there's some character background but not enough and there wasn't any character development. I think they focused too much on mixing all of their ideas/concepts in one season when they could have spread it out and worked on those concepts/ideas to develop them properly. For example, Oren's character had an eating disorder but was also struggling with his sexuality, it would have been better focusing on one of those concepts instead of forcing both onto that character as his character was a mess. There were way too many cliches and made me roll my eyes the whole entire series. June's character, having an ASIAN mum who strives for perfection and puts too much pressure on her daughter to be "perfect", I mean come on... It's 2021 for crying out loud, aren't we over that basic cliche by now? Too predictable. Or (Shane) the openly gay character who is secretly insecure and is not as confident as he plays off to be. Or (Neveah) the "black girl" from the hood, with a chip on her shoulder and an attitude problem (please I'm rolling my eyes". Let's not forget (Bette) the classic blonde-haired blue-eyed mean girl, who is rich and spoiled, always talking smack about everyone behind their backs (even her "best friend") and takes every opportunity to get ahead. There are so many more to name off but I will be here until 2022 if I named them all.

I know in high school we had some teacher/student relationships happening but the cops got called ASAP and the teacher got fired. I’m sorry but making adults in their late 20’s and 30’s act as 16/17 year olds does not feel authentic.
I agree it moved entirely too fast and yet I am invested in seeing the next season. I was confused by how quickly romances picked up. I kept thinking I missed a scene or two and rewinding.
This show felt ENDLESS. 10 episodes more like 100. Just when I thought I was almost done the show I still had 5 episodes left. It was tiring watching the show.

Lost dance opportunities, kicked out of the school, despised by teachers, never got the chance to show her dance abilities ever apart from once with Oren. She got nothing out of it apart from Bette saying 'Neveah is the best one here' behind her back
I noticed a recurring patter w Oren which is how he's always the one that gets involved in unwanted sexual situations...the one who is always pushed against the wall and touched without his consent, he can barely say no or defend himself. I wonder if that's one of the themes that the show will tackle in season 2
I just could not get on board with Neveah because she was just so rude and hostile to everyone like even on the first time meeting them before they’ve even given her cause for it, I can’t tell you how many times I was just shouting at the tv “dude come on!” “you can’t talk to her like that do you forget that you’re talking to a police officer?!” 😅 very strange writing and don’t even get me started on the continuity (or lack thereof) of people hating each other one minute then being besties the next, people screwing each other and then NEVER apologising (literally, the word “sorry” does not exist in the TPT universe) and then the sudden intense romances coming out of nowhere...but in other news your hair is just beautiful!😊

Not gonna lie this review was better than the actual show XD I really wanted this to be a dance centered show but I feel like they saw shows like Elite and Riverdale be popular and decided to basically have the same who killed who story line and just focus on minors sex life.
Your review on this show, every single character and story analysis, SPOT ON! Such a pity because there's actually so much potential to make this series so good. 2nd season is a pass for me.
OH MY GOSHHHHH, at 6:25, I totally agree with you. They didn't need to get together this season in order to allow for that tension build. Like what the fudge, this was a robbery of an iconic ship. The lack of courting and banter was annoying. The actors even seemed so awkward in their scenes because there was no gradual build which could've helped them in real life. Especially since this is their first time acting. I can't.
the problem is that in an effort to get really talented dancers they COMPLETELY slacked on the acting side, but i must say, those dancers could DANCE; they were amazing

I'm trying to figure out where the outrage is over this series.... Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this supposed to be a high school? All the teen sex, throw it in your face gay sex involving teens and student/teacher sex, isn't this child porn too. Let's not forget about how everyone was supposed to boycott Netflix because of The movie Cuties. For those who took READ the description of Cuties and then take the time to actually watch it, we were told exactly what to expect. This series on the other hand was nothing but ten episodes of teen porn, because I was interested to find out who pushed the girl I stuck with it. Loved seeing a black dancer be the star but of course she couldn't just have talent, she had to be a broken black girl.

i feel so stupid i thought they were all in a college (18-19 in age) - hence all the sex and drinking - but i feel disgusted and disappointed knowing these are supposed to be depicting teenagers. think its quite shady of them to never directly mention the ages in the show so to have a way of excusing all of it. its unfortunate its a prominent issue in most teen dramas (euphoria being another one..) and should be addressed more especially when the majority consumer of these types of media are teens themselves and such representations i can't see as being healthy in long-term or even slightly accurate

Honestly I thought his French accent was better than the vast majority I see on tv/Netflix from non-French actors. I’d imagine that to anyone who lives close to authentic French accents on daily basis it would be cringe, but to most of us who don’t, I thought it was admirable.
I haven’t read the book yet but I would like to some time. I have pretty much the same thoughts on all of the characters and plotlines as you did. But goooosh I was so invested, I could hardly stop watching, I really loved it, weirdly. Can’t wait for the next season. Here’s to hoping for less romance and more character development 🙏🏻

I think that Nevaeh’s initial plot arc may have been about her finding her place and some friends, which might be why she’s only really helping other people with their problems.
I can’t tell you how many sex scenes I had to skip. I also quickly realized that this show was one of those shows that gives you a MC but then brings in another MC later on who plays a bigger role to the overall plot (especially with Cassie doing all the narrating) so I wasn’t surprised when Neveah got sidelined.
You nailed it! The best thing about the show was that it was about wonderfully talented dancers actually PLAYED BY wonderfully talented dancers. The worst thing about it was the writing. They crammed in so many serious (but undeveloped) subjects that it caused the show to lack focus and substance. And yes, why a school with so many horrible adults? That said, I want another season so they can fix the deficiencies. It could be great!

And thank you for not comparing it to the book too much, I had enough of that after looking at reviews for The Letter For The King. (: I liked Shane's need for a queer role model and the thing with him and Mr Brooks (I think? like I can't remember anyone's name for some reason) but that never went anywhere. I also feel like they tried to set up his desire for a serious relationship but he just went and kept sleeping with people with, again, no properly wholesome conclusion with that thing with Dev. Shane's my favourite character, in case you couldn't tell. He was the only reason I started watching it and he's now my adopted son and I just want him to be happy whyyyyy But As much as I liked Shane, that thing with Oren was messed up, and it was there for almost no reason? He was kind of repentant, but they really just brushed it off. |: Moving on I do think the series kept bringing in random personality and personal issues really late, and while we're on that, what about the characters that were somehow present the whole time but were only brought in really late. Who were Paige and Esme? The series acted like everyone was already established. And Neveah and Oren popped out of nowhere what was that whole relationship? And oh my gosh was this series overflowing with dudes' butts. I hate to be that person that writes a literal novel in the comments. Sorry for taking up all this space guys and don't give the cast too much of a hard time, they really enjoyed making the series and they were so sad when it got cancelled. ):

I was also confused as to why nothing was done to lock the doors to the roof after a student litteraly almost died. Like, they were all there almost every day after that.
Aside from the whole show generally being cheesy melodramatic crap it's the treatment of Shane that really got me. The tokenization transported me like 10 years back, there were so many moments where he was clearly in the right but was pushed to feel bad about something or to be grateful for scraps, like with Matteo's forced, half assed apology. And I get that that can happen but it was framed in such a way that we were supposed to agree with the other characters and think that Shane was out of line. And then of course there is the oversexualization which happened to more characters but with Shane it was just the most intense because of the age old gay stereotype.
Even though the show was trash, it was amazing trash!! Some of the writing was a bit meh and personally I can’t STAND nevaeh!!! I will definitely be bingeing a season 2 if it comes!!
I binged the show and I really enjoyed it because I still haven't read the books and the drama was kind of nostalgic for me. It was like Pretty little liars in some ways. 😁 Also I absolutely agree that the romances made no sense whatsoever. Everything was rushed and undeveloped. I could barely keep up with the show, characters were friends, and then they won’t. Characters dated- and then broke up. I mean Neveah and Nabil were kissing in front of Cassie and then… kind of never talked again? Even Ramone costa and Madame Dubois had sex ( 😐😑😐🤢 did not want to watch that) and then got mad at each other because Dubois trying to keep him there but if i’m not mistaken they were cool with each other like two episodes later. And then Nabil??? Having Cassie in a coma, kissing Neveah and being in love with June??? I couldn’t keep up
I gotta say I started skipping almost everything in this show after 3 episodes, just to listen to every dialogue that Shane had with ppl. Apart from that skipped almost everything. Watched some dances. Skipped all the naked scenes, yes even with shane. Not my thing XD Relationships felt weird as all hell. And in conclusion, 5/10 can't wait for the next season. :|
The most insane part of this show to me was the age difference between madame and caleb! like the actual actors have a 30 year age gap!! She's nearly 60 and he's nearly 30!!! I wonder what that was like for the actors to do those sex scenes... It was so jarring to me!!

I both love and hate this show. The dancing was amazing; I have re-watched that final dance number so many times. I even like the general plot. I couldn't way to see how they resolved the Michi Club problem and Cassie. The pacing of the relationships and character development was so off, though. I finished the show and had to go back a few episodes because I was trying to figure out how/when/why Oren and Nevaeh got together. I legitimately though that I had accidentally skipped an episode or two. All this being said, I will definitely be watching season two.
I liked it, it was ok, but we got to be honest , the way TV shows like to sexualize teenager characters, i mean, man, that really have to stop (i know the actors are not teenagers), but it's always the same shit, EVERYONE HAVING SEX ALL THE TIME AND DOING CRAZY UNREALISTIC THINGS ALL THE TIME! Yes , teenagers have sex, but the way they show those stuff just to get people watching. C'mom, there are real teenagers watching those things, seeing people with unrealistic bodies for their ages, which is another problem when u put adults to play teenagers, they don't look or act like one, u know? This is so problematic and the fact that nobody talks about that makes me feel really sad, because i used to see those things when i was 15/16 and think that there was something wrong with me because i didn't look or act like those people at all.
I like the show June was my favorite character the dream sequence was weird. Officer Cruz was super weird & pyscho. I’m glad they didn’t wait three years like Pretty Little Liars to revealed secrets.
First of all: Am I the only one who thought at least during the first two episodes that Neveah is the narrator?? 😅 However, I totally agree with your opinions on the characters and the plot, another thing that makes it hard for me to fully sympathize with the show is that there is not a single character who I completely like or sympathize with. Every character has his/her "good" and "bad" side but there is no one I can actually identify myself with. And then there are these typical stereotypes.. there's the black girl, the asian, the blonde mean girl, the gay couples.. it felt like the creator wanted to fit everything that today's teenagers have to deal with into this show. Eating disorders, sexuality, sexual harassment.. It's a bit too much

And Neveah character don't have a depth.All the men looks like mess and foot servants of bette. Show should have focused on dance but it's focused on S*x life. i liked it but it also felt like another elite to me you know netflix’s spanish original. they both have lots of sex and nudity and also are solving murders. once they solve one another person dies then it repeats.

I am not ashamed to admit I watched the entirety of this show unironically and was amazed at the sheer combination of loving craftsmanship and trash that made this thing. A. Maze. Ing.
The series was just all over the place. It really had a potential to be great but it failed miserably, there was just to many errors with under deveoped characters, cringe worthy acting, bad drama, too much unnecessary sex scenes.
