@@Easyly1953 they've had their part to play too. Some really great and outstanding, some decent, and some okay. That said, LKY was the one who built that foundation/blueprint in the first place, and that's why he gets this much credit to our nation's success.
I am a Singaporean who's pushing 60. I had witnessed first hand, Singapore's progression from a 3rd world country to a 1st world nation under the leadership of Mr LKY. Mr LKY was a very much beloved leader who was admired and respected by the people. At his state funeral, millions turned up to pay their last respects, with hundreds of thousands queuing overnight for 8 to 10 hours to do so. We love this man because he truly cared for our welfare and was deeply burdened by our survival as a nation when Malaysia kicked us out of the Federation. I, and I believe the older generation will always be grateful to this man, and we will always hold him dear to our hearts. Thank you Mr Lee Kuan Yew ❤.
@fishloh97 Singapore is a mirror image to Sri Lanka with hard working indian population, small little island , but only 1 different. ......That , Singapore has its natural asset - its natural geographic maritime location but Sri Lanka don't ...... You need to be intelligent and rational not be emotional and shallow........The key reason for Singapore's remarkable prosperity and economic success is its strategic geographic location as a major global shipping hub. Being situated at the heart of important maritime trade routes between Asia and the rest of the world has allowed Singapore to capture immense economic benefits from the trillions of dollars in maritime commerce passing through its waters. In contrast, a country like Sri Lanka, despite its own geographic advantages, has not been able to achieve the same level of economic development and wealth because it does not occupy a similarly critical position in major global shipping lanes. The implication is that Singapore's prosperity is heavily dependent on its inherent geographic advantages, rather than solely on the capabilities of its people or the leadership of its government. If Singapore were somehow relocated to a less strategically important location, like Sri Lanka, it would likely struggle to maintain its current economic success and status. Conversely, if Sri Lanka were able to replicate Singapore's geographic advantages, for example by developing a major shipping canal or land bridge, it could potentially transform its economic fortunes in a similar way. In essence, Singapore's remarkable prosperity is fundamentally rooted in its privileged geographic position as a global maritime hub, more so than any other intrinsic factors.shallow. In fact, Singapore's strategic geographic maritime location is the **major natural asset** that has created trillions of dollars in revenue over the last century. Without this natural asset, Lee Kuan Yew would be unheard of like Sri Lankan Prime Minister and today's Singapore may not have been possible, and may have ended up in a dismal state like its mirror image, Sri Lanka.
@zemry-mh4sq Hi, I disagree. Reason being many countries possess abundant natural resources and strategic locations, but their success does not necessarily reflect their inherent advantages. One example of a country with a strategic maritime location that remains poor is Yemen. Singapore's success is largely attributed to the vision and wisdom of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. His unwavering integrity and genuine concern for the welfare of the people were cornerstones of his leadership. Mr. Lee dedicated his life to transforming Singapore from a small, struggling island into a thriving, first-class nation. His visionary leadership was evident in his ability to foresee the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead, guiding the nation with a steady hand. Mr. Lee was resolute and unyielding when it came to making difficult yet necessary decisions, often implementing bold policies that were essential for Singapore's growth. Despite the toughness required in his role, he never lost sight of the primary goal: the welfare and prosperity of the Singaporean people. His commitment to building a meritocratic society, fostering economic development, and ensuring social stability has left an enduring legacy. There's much more to his story, so if you're interested, I encourage you to research and read about him. BTW the footage is about LKY who was Singapore's founding father, what has that got to do with Sri Lanka?

@fishloh97 It seems you're deliberately trying to present Singapore in an overly favorable, sanitized light while obscuring the realities about its citizens. Now, you appear to be getting defensive and trying to soften your tone, even as you continue denying these realities. But I'm exposing you - I'm going to expose this hypocrisy and the ugly truth about Singapore tactics by ignoring and being selfish towards its own struggling citizens...You'd better be scared, because I won't hold back in revealing the truth to support Singapore innocent citizens. However Dubai and Qatar treatment of its citizens are in stark contrast to Singapore obscurity about its citizens welfare and treatment.

Actually, it was not simply a first class honours. Mr. Lee actually got a very rare double-starred-first-class honours degree and topped his cohort. Now consider the context: he was an Asian at Cambridge University in 1947. And what's probably more interesting is that Mr. Lee's future wife, Madam Kwa, joined his cohort one year late (i.e. missed the first year), and yet she still graduated the same time as him, and with first-class honours.

His criticism of Western self-superiority is valid - a general rejection of anything that’s different from how the West does things, but without any attempt by the West to understand how Asia operates. America prides itself on freedom, with anything different couched as ‚oppression‘, but not seeing their own utter lack of control over their own administrations, economy and basic citizen welfare.

Growing up I did not understand the issues between Mr. Lee and western Media, and many of his policies and decisions much. Now I do, and do appreciate majority of them. Most importantly I learned that Western media really lies, and lies without shame! And it’s getting out of hand!
Lee’s made a good slip and counter with the “no advertisement” policy. Pure journalism does not need advertisements. If it’s good, I will definitely pay for accurate and important information. Again, the crucial point is that advertisement is not allow in pure journalism.

Our founding father’s relationship with Western journalism was characterized by a fundamental clash of values and priorities. His criticisms and actions reflected his belief in the need for responsible, factual reporting that supported national development, as opposed to what he saw as the sensationalism and ideological biases of much of the Western press. He placed a high value on truth and factual reporting, asserting that misleading or sensational news could undermine public trust and social cohesion. He believed that the media should play a constructive role in society, supporting national development rather than sensationalizing issues for profit or ideological reasons.

The rewards are huge in trafficking drugs and many are willing to risk it. But we cannot continue to build prisons because it drains our tax money and most importantly, drugs destroys thousands of lives and families for several generations to come.
Singapore is a good example of how to achieve success by forging its own path instead of blindly following Western ideology which as we can see has eroded their national identity and allowed social rot to set in. LKY intrinsically understood right from the beginning that former colonial powers had no interests nor incentives to see their former colonies prosper and that the collective Western foreign media were merely extensions of their States to undermine the success of their former colonies. That was pretty evident from their government's covert actions in Africa, South America, Middle East and other parts of Asia.

In essence, Singapore's remarkable prosperity is fundamentally rooted in its privileged geographic position as a global maritime hub, more so than any other intrinsic factors.
@wisdombites3586 The notion that "Singapore has no natural resources except its people" is blatantly lie and shallow. In fact, Singapore's strategic geographic maritime location is the **major natural asset** that has created trillions of dollars in revenue over the last century. Without this natural asset, Lee Kuan Yew would be unheard of like Sri Lankan Prime Minister and today's Singapore may not have been possible, and may have ended up in a dismal state like its mirror image, Sri Lanka or India.
@@zemry-mh4sq right minds make it work with or without resources. This guy was genius. If you look are many countries with resources but live in poverty, you will agree that resources don’t guarantee prosperity and peace.

If Lee Kuan Yew can live longer , I cannot imagine what S‘pore will be . Such a Great Man . S‘porean are so thankful & greatful for what he had done . Look at Singapore today 🎉.
The credit should not for this man as well. There4 is a team of elite congregated at Singapore and can have their talent able to flourish also. LKY should never be pray like Jesus God or Chairman Mao
To all our doubters & jealous neighbours, it’s not just LKY & his Cabinet’s brilliance, but also their values & principles by which they lived & worked, & which they passed down to us. God has indubitably blessed us in those ways & more. While we’ve been blessed as well with a strategically positioned port, we’re just an island with limited natural resources or none, only our people. It’s not like we were born with a silver spoon. You, our neighbours, have so much more to begin with, if you ask me. But God has been kind to us the underdogs. Thank God for that, or we would be done for!
As a Singaporean, I’m eternally thankful to have the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew as our founding leader. I have tremendous respect for him especially his forward thinking and actions for the country. Also, his firm and fearless attitude towards those rubbish western media over the years.👍👏
Not many people know that CIA attempted to bribe Lee Kuan Yew not long after Singapore's independence. But LKY firmly rejected this evil attempt and had shown his upright attitude and clean governance.
Jokowi has brought a lot of improvements in Indonesia, just too bad he has only 10 years and many people still complain about him. Maybe Indonesia deserves a bad leader like Suharto.
Its not possible, because LKY's views values contraditcs with most of Indonesians believe today, ever since the fall of Soeharto in 1998, Indonesian transition into a democracy with elections every 5 years, and majority of Indonesians tend to demonize any form of iron fist governence, ask any Indonesian today many would dismiss Singapore or China's success citing that they should learn from democracies instead of authoroterian countries, its just never gonna work cause our society has a different mindset with Singapore's and China's
No I am Indonesian, I am speaking this based on my experience interacting with intellectuals who were radically pro democracy in campuses, I asked them about Singapore/China's model of development most of them responded to me "Soeharto's era has proven authoroterianism is bad for our country and if we follow Singapore/China model it will bring us back to the era of oppression, the only reason why a lot of young people idealise it because they didnt experience the new order era" and this trauma resulted from Soeharto era is the reason why a lot of intellectuals here are radically pro democracy, if you watch LKY's interviews and speeches, most of the things he says would offend an average Indonesia who is radically loyal to the values of the 1998 reformation.

From what I’m reading, he was just a rotten dictator who ruled for 52 years & brutally crushed and imprisoned all dissent and political opponents, all freedom of expression and any kind of activism or union activity, while destroying all the different cultures of that region to fit into his anal-retentive procrustean bed of artificial nationalism. At the same time he sold the country out to foreign corporations, making an elite extraordinarily rich, while subjecting many of his people to poverty.

what are you talking about. I just learned of Lee but I knew the hard talk BBC guy for many years. Singapore is blessed to have a leader like him. When he talked about people's lives being better off during his rule, what else are we aiming for? Does it matter if its democracy or autocracy?
As a Singaporean observing the lack of manners and condescension towards anyone in the Western media about matters out of their depth, I would say things don’t change and the Founding Father is vindicated
Americans like their "democracy, freedom of press, freedom of expression, right to bear arms" and all that jazz and look at them today as compared to Singapore. I'm not Singaporean but i do know for a fact that life is much better and safer there than anywhere else in this world.
i was just thinking of reading his book. I'm from india as well. was wondering you engage in any socialmedia groups regarding international especially asian politics and economics, which you think are great. if so, pls do share them with me as well
It is the western mindset. The media is a group of westerners who make a living by wagging their tongues to produce sounds that the western public love to hear.
Not only the media, the people in general of the western hemisphere/caucasian mindset is they are superior in all aspect while people in the east are stupid
this is a man of integrity, honesty, truth and strength, from the very first day he headed Singapore to whatever decision he had made has never been for the the welfare of for the citizens of Singapore, if only we have more leaders Like him Asia , Asia would have been more powerful instead of being manipulated by the western world. he deserved better recognition as one of the best leaders of them world.

That’s what I love about LKY and Singapore. They don’t have Left, Right, Centrist, Moderate ideology that plagues Western counties, they just have a damn effective common sense government that works to better their people!
For someone to speak so well in 1980s, it's amazing to see this chosen one turn a literal island into a country with the strongest passport in the WORLD.
Brilliant! Thank you for putting this together. I only wish the younger generations will understand the hard work and sacrifice that has brought us to this day. And continue to do so in the future after LKY!
