I did this work for 32 years I drove a front loader pushing 1200 pounds bins and all house to house route was all manual labor no automation in my day.
The whole point is “Up The Drive” service. It’s almost like back door service but that’s why we are in pick up trucks with dump boxes. People can leave their bins up the drive at the garage or put it down at the curb or really anywhere on their driveway. As long as we have a clear path to back the pick up truck to where the bins are.
I just watched this video again as it popped up in my feed. The lunacy of backing into each driveway is incomprehensible! The inefficiency of getting in and out of the truck every 50 feet is ludicrous. The transmission is taking an enormous beating. Fuel cost due to taking 4 times longer to pick up trash in any given location is a profit killer. I could go on and on....
This is how the city wants it done. They don’t want the big trucks driving up and down the streets. When GFL bid on the contract, the city had three options 1) All automated 2) Hybrid service (Subscription Up The Drive and regular automated service) 3) All Up The Drive service (6% cost increase from the previous contract that WM had with the city) and city leaders voted 11-3 to keep it UTD even with the cost increase. The trucks are serviced regularly. With it being a “profit killer” I highly doubt it as we are way above the budgeted homes per hour.
