That's a much better option than the leather sheath I made, that doesn't have a retention strap. There have been several times that I finished hiking, to find that my knife was missing. Backtracking, I always found it hanging from a limb, by the lanyard I attached to it. I'll either remove the lanyard, or buy one of these sheaths. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Blackie. I just decided I want to buy an Old Hickory Butcher Knife. I mainly want to use it in the kitchen but that replacement sheath is too good a deal to pass up. I remember when you could easily find an Old Hickory knife at a resale shop. I have not seen one locally for a long time. The one shop in my town does not even sell any used large kitchen knives. I guess they are afraid someone may cut themselves while looking at it. I did find a new Ontario Old Hickory 7" Blade Butcher Knife at walmart online for $10.83. Shipping is $7.27. That seems to be a great deal. Wishing you and your family a happy and safe Christmas holiday.
@@BLACKIETHOMAS I found a better deal for the Old Hickory 7" Carbon Steel knife on ebay for $11.19 FREE shipping. I expect delivery by Thursday so it will be a nice Christmas present from me to me. I am going to really try to act surprised when i see it. I have to laugh at some of the comments for videos on the Old Hickory CARBON steel knife. Haha, several folks complain after cleaning the knife rusts right away. Of course it rusts, it is NOT made of stainless steel folks. That is why after cleaning it you should put a light coat of oil on it. I own a High Q Mora Kniv. After I bought it I gave it a forced Patina by pouring boiling apple cider vinegar into a tall container and then suspending my Mora into the vinegar for about ten minutes. I have never seen any rust on the blade ever. You can treat it then dry it and repeat another 10 minutes if you want a darker Patina or until the effervescent action stops.
I’m looking for two. One to restore or leave original except for epoxy if the scales on and one to mod into a 4.5” Kephart style and maybe a third to mod into a 3.5” Kephart. Keeps me busy and outa trouble!!
Thanks for the info. I had heard the KBar sheaths were the right size, but I didn't know for sure. I could use an 8" Old Hickory for my large knife and keep my Mora for small work. Sounds good to me.
I put a ranger band completely over the handle. It gives it a better grip and supports the "supposedly" weak rivets. I also have the re-issue Kabar sheath.
i've started modifying old hickory butcher knives ( reshapeing and redoing handles ) I also make kydex sheaths for them. nothing super special but well made
Been using a kabar sheath for my old hickory for a few years now. I just cut the strap with the snap off. I found it didn't really to anything to keep the knife in.
This is the Ka-bar USMC 7" combat knife sheath, but, without the letter stamping. Right now it's about $10 with free shipping on Amazon. If you want the actual USMC knife replacement sheath with the lettering, it's about $16 + free shipping.
I guess that search no longer works well. I did a search at amazon.com for "ka-bar replacement knife sheath" and then i tried adding the word leather but still nothing of the sort in this video showed up. oh well, I will keep looking.
I just did a search on amazon for "ka-bar sheath" and the 7-inch with all the lettering on it as well as the plain one were both near the top of the search results. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=ka-bar+sheath
Only the blade area is heat treated on a old hickory. The handle will bend in hard use! I carry a Russell Green River 5" hunting knife because the whole blade and handle is heat treated. They do not bend!
+tooterr101 oldgeezer ..most of the knives will turn with use but you can force one if you like....i like the look of a well used old knife...safe jounreys
I've got this sheath however I'm going to get another one because the strap is gone on mine because when I got it the strap wasn't long enough to go around my Kabar . Long story short I was going to get the leather man at the flea market to fix it but didn't get chance
+John Q. Public Good question! I have soaked a leather sheath in olive oil to preserve the leather before. It does a good job and coats the blade every time it is used.
+John Q. Public coconut oil is solid but will melt at body temp. its the best i have found for knifes and sheaths and is food grade. try it u will like it.
7inch blade? also whats the difference between the butcher knife and hop knife from old hickory? they look the same cept the hop knife doesnt have the grooves on the knife it self?
THANK YOU, I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A SHEATH FOR MY OLD HICKORY. I'M LIKE YOU DID NOT WANT TO PAY A BUNCH FOR ONE. DO YOU LIKE A THE SHEATH THE MORA COMES IN OR DO YOU LIKE A LEATHER ONE BETTER?
Say Heah Blackie. Instead I got a Stromeng KS-9 Leuku. One reason was I found out Lars Munson used his as his belt knife when he crossed Canada. I also got tge KS-5 and a Bhuku STAK which is a copy of tge Puukku that all Olympians got that participated in the Winter Olympics that year. The Saame Ingenious People gave the smaller Leuku to Children at the age of 7-8 years old. Also to Women. Stromeng only makes that size out of 12c27 Sandvik Stainless. Same with the Bhuku. But seriously Blackie, The tangs are tempered spot on because I batoned with mine. I don't baton much since I like taking my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe with my Leukos. O know Stromeng makes a great Leuku.,,. p
it will do a good job to seal the metal from rusting easy..the patina no matter the method used is black oxide..( dead rust)..and act as a pretty good protection
I put a paracord wrap around the middle of the handle which made a nice palm swell. It also stops the knife from backing out of the sheath because the wrap butts up against the retention strap. I've even scout carried the knife and sheath that way with no problem. I know it's not a scout carry type sheath but a couple more pieces of paracord modify that.
