I used many tents. Recently been using Cabellas Windstar 6 man. I can stand up in it. (Reason for purchase) It's a geodesic. It handles sustained winds above 50 mph, I know as I used it in those winds. With heavy rain. Geodesic tents are the best. The only con I have with my Windstar is set up and take down as I run solo. It can be set up solo even for an old fella like myself. You just have to be smarter then the materials your working with.
@pimacanyon6208
@pimacanyon6208 3 года назад
I think you're right about the dome tents being maybe the best for standing up to wind. Looks like the Cabellas Windstar 6 is made of polyester which is way better than nylon for use in bright sunshine because UV doesn't break down polyester like it does nylon. (Probably eventually does break it down, but much more slowly than nylon.) Interesting idea. Looks like you would have a lot of room inside especially for one or two people. How long does it take you to set it up?
@michaeltichonuk2176
@michaeltichonuk2176 3 года назад
@@pimacanyon6208 set up about 20 minutes on the short side, usually about 30, but that includes setting up whatever bed I use too and putting clothes locker (tubs) in. Take down always is longer though. Making sure it's dry, no debris being trapped in it. This is the con part. I enjoy this Windstar especially out west where I can fold fly back and see the stars or whatever is outside my tent. Purchase price was 225, with veteran discount and sale . Excellent buy for me. The vestibule is extremely useful ...has more then enough room for chairs and cooking...
@michaeltichonuk2176

@@pimacanyon6208 I also got the floor, it the same as the Alaskan guide floor. I used that as a template for the footprint I cut outta a 10 mil home depot tarp. Protect the floor if you get one. Videos said it was the weak link so I addressed that right off.

I think you are on to something Bob. The circle in a wind is a good choice as wall tents have more resistance. However both of those might be tough to drive stakes in the desert. I do love the solution to the poles in these modern ones. The true native american tipis had a large number of long wood poles that could be used as a carrier when moving with horses but in the modern world the best answer is a boat trailer with a barrel for the ends of the poles and a rack at the other end to put them high over the roof of the tow vehicle. Cannot wait to see how these work. But I think you are correct in that they are best where there are trees for wind break. Many folks I have seen ended up making stakes out of rebar with welded hooks for the tent loops so that you can have real steel to pound into the ground, but rebar stakes are heavy and you need a heavy hammer as well. Always trade offs of weight and strength.

Another good one Bob. Tipis make good sense for the desert. Hopefully your testers don't disappear and you can get good reviews over time. Those long term reviews that you have people do are brilliant. Perhaps for the setting up video, you could have an older woman do it, to show how it works. Not a tall one like Bex (she's young anyway) but someone like 5' tall and over 60, because that's who is looking at this and wondering if it will work for her. For hot weather, I think the taller one would be better to allow the heat to rise and escape. For winter, I'd want to cover that opening to keep my body heat inside.

Have to disagree about the difficulty of putting up the Kodiak Flex Bow tents. I’ve been using my two man Kodiak VX Flex Bow tent (8.5ft X 6ft) for weeks at a time for the last year, and its a breeze to set up and take down. The strong Canvas has held up to the sun, and 50-60mph Mojave desert wind storms, without the incessant flapping you talk about. This size would be comfortable for two, and I find spacious for myself. After setting it up 2 or 3 times, you become an expert at it. I will say without qualification, this is the best car-camping tent I’ve used in nearly 50 years of doing it,

Bob my Honda Civic had 4 14 mm bolts holding the passenger seat. It took me 5 minutes to remove it. then, I bought 40 dollar's worth of wood and tools and built a flat bed. Then I put my foam mattress there. I get 40 mpg. I lived in a tent for 4 months before finally building a bed. It's just way more convenient to find a parking spot than a flat campsites not to mention my mattress used to get wet on the bottom from condensation, leaky zippers, and zero sound dampening. Oh and waking up shivering sucks.

The tent is made in Scandinavia and is modeled after the Sami tipi style tents. These people were / are the traditional reindeer herders. The company that was mentioned, imports these tents. They are designed to be able to have a fire within or the use of a portable wood stove. 4 Dog Stoves, out of Minnesota, makes a very nice titanium stove which works very nicely. You pay for quality. IMHO pay once, cry once!

The Kodiak seems durable but we used ours for the second time in Convict lake and the winds were horrible. Ripped the tent at the seam of the bathtub and the structural integrity of the tent was toast. The company was supposed to send us a replacement canvas and they didn't. This was 2.5 months ago. It is also heavy and pretty much requires 2 people to set up.

I am extremely interested in the outcome of testing these two tepee tents. I only have a tent to bring with me when I travel (for the very first time) to AZ in Dec… I just watched yr video on living in a tent in AZ and was disheartened to learn about the wind issue….stupid question, but is it windy every day, all day and are there other parts of AZ that aren’t so windy that might be better for tenting? Thank you for your informative videos, Bob!

We live off grid in the Arizona desert. It can get very windy. But it's usually a gentle breeze for the most part. Calm often and seasonal issues to consider. Monsoon season can be stormy and windy at times. Usually nothing is long lived. Windy half a day, and pleasant for weeks at a time.
@pimacanyon6208
@pimacanyon6208 3 года назад
I live in Tucson (southeastern Arizona in the Sonoran Desert) and I can say that wind here is pretty much like it is anywhere else in that it blows some days, but not as much on other days. But as Bob points out, on the days that it does blow, you're going to feel it because there's nowhere to get away from it like there would be if you were in a forest. One thing you can do is park your car on the upwind side of your tent, so the car can serve as a windbreak. But even that doesn't always work because we have a diurnal wind pattern on most days. Here in Tucson, it's often calm at night, then in the morning wind may pick up and blow out of the south or southeast, but around noon it often shifts and blows out of the north or northwest in the afternoon.

@@eckankar7756 critters are not a problem for me, having lived in Tucson for 13 years. We've had rattlesnakes on our property several times. We're actually glad to see them because they eat packrats! I've seen one scorpion in 13 years. Coyotes yes, but they always run the other way. I've backpacked all over the North Cascades in Washington State, so I've dealt with bears too. And we ran into a bear hiking in the Santa Ritas just south of Tucson. Generally the critters are way more afraid of us than we are of them. I do carry bear spray and a marine horn (tiny little one) when backpacking, more for peace of mind while sleeping than anything else. I've never had to use either the bear spray or the horn. UV will damage all fabrics, yes, but polyester and cotton much less so than nylon.

For stakes - hardware stores sell galvanized steel 12" garden nails which are about $1 each. If you find someone that does blacksmithing, nothing beats a handmade set of heavy iron, although they cost a bit more and can be quite weighty if you need a good number of them. Tipis are cool, but especially in a place with a lot of creepy crawlies, Id rather have the zip up model with a sewn in floor. Id hate to wake to find a rattler decided to cuddle up next to me for warmth, lol.

Wondering about prospectors (aka wall) tents. More poles required, though. But in forest lines to trees can substitute. Usually also heavy canvas. Great living space/clearances and woodstove-friendly.

Bob can you teach us the difference of storage of these tents. Is there a greater difference in the "smells of a stored tent" in other words is there a greater possibility of mold in a canvas tent as opposed to a nylon tent???? Please advise. Thank you. Happy trails always...

Always, always make sure your tent is dry when you pack it away. If there's an emergency, and you can't wait for it to dry after a rain before moving, then get to where it's dry leaving your tent unpacked (not in its storage bag, but laid out best you can), and even if you don't have any intention of setting up right away, lay it out someplace to dry preferably under a bright sun if you stop for a lunch or a break, and then pack it away in its bag. We never had a problem with mildew-y or moldy tents because we always made sure they were packed away dry, and stored in a dry place.

interesting...sadly my back isn't overly happy with me for tent setup but I do think about one of those 8x8 extra room that attaches to the awning

Enjoyed the video, but that was a bit of a unfair comparison. Obviously the teepees are suited for two different purposes. If you're going to live in it, buy the heavier one. If you're a weekender, the lighter one might work for you.

I have been living in my Kodiak 10x10 tent for over a year now and one of my biggest problems is finding a level area in a desirable spot. With the tepee footprint 50% larger I can imagine it's going to be really hard to find a good place for the tent unless you are pitching it randomly in the open. Just a thought.

So, it seems rain would flood the floor since this does not have a sealed floor as a tent would. Would this be better suited if installed on a platform of some sort? This of course would make it less protable.

Love ya, Bob, but without the setup, kind of a useless video. Much of your commentary could have been overlaid on a setup video.
