I went to a fast food place yesterday. We had to order at the counter. We also had to go grab our own food at the counter when it was done. We had to grab our own napkins and make our own drink. Yet, they flipped the screen around and asked for a tip. We happily pressed "no tip." Tipping is for people who provide a service. I hate the tipping culture. No one should be tipped because their doing a job, they should be paid by the employer a reasonable amount for the benefit they provide to the business; just like any other job. Servers usually make a lot more than 15/hr on avg closer to 30/hr most of it non-taxable (so closer to 40 before tax). I was a server while in university and was making more than at my job out of university, which was taxable, required a huge investment (student loan), and just as demanding if not more than remembering a few orders and being polite. Sorry but not sorry… North America is the only place this really happens. For the people that rely on tipping to support your income, blame it on your employer for not paying you adequately not the people paying tips with after tax money.

I tip when I think I recieved excellent service. Telling me that the worker needs my tip to survive is not enough to make me tip. If a restaurant is not able to provide a living wage to its employees then it shouldn't be in the business. They wl have money for everything else but not a single penny to pay it's employees who actually work hard so yea it's not the customer problem. Tipping is the service you get and its not mandatory. Most of the outside food anyway is average and service is even below average but then expect you too tip 15,20 or more percentage of tip. It's simple greed of business owners to pay its employee's bare minimum and basically go and beg to customers for a tip. Not a healthy environment for the worker and the customer.

The issue with the 20 percent on top is that it makes servers lazy. The problem with "included" gratuity, is that people working there *still* expect a tip. Cruise liners do that and some hotels, yet the bartenders and servers on the cruise still expect a tip. Makes me wonder if that gratuity the business charges ever actually makes it to the workers. In the U.S., especially if you frequent a place, your service goes down if you don't tip/don't tip enough. This is particularly true in restaurants.

Tipping is just a "do not spit in my food bribe." This is why I don't order from apps because if the restaurant sees my to go order and there is no tip, they would likely do this. Same with delivery apps. I tip after to see if my food is even delivered before I tip cash but I have seen videos where someone compromised or ate their food and when they are presented cash at the front door, they say keep it because the food is already messed up or gone.

Even though in Japan I went to restaurants all the time, tips are 20% included in the price. In most cases I don't think tipping is necessary, but when it comes to things like serving in a sit-down restaurant, or food delivery, if you don't tip you're a shitty person. Fact of the matter is, it's supply and demand. At least on the food delivery front where I work. These days, if you don't payout a good tip or at least a halfway decent one, your food is going to arrive late and cold and it's your fault. You want these companies to pay drivers more or servers more, but it's not happening and you're going to have to get over it or stop using the service.

Hidden fees and forced tipping should be eliminated everywhere. Even tipping being assumed should be. They should pay workers a decent wage and change prices to show exactly what you will be paying for your food etc. upfront and tipping should just be oh you did a great job, thank you, here is a tip. The idea that the customer should be left to pay the workers while they pretend food prices are lower than they are is just as bad as hidden fees on phone bills etc.

The only reason tipping in the US is still a thing is because it's the customer subsidizing corporations not paying workers enough. It's really that simple. Other countries have higher wages for service workers and so tipping isn't necessary. In the US tipping is what service workers RELY on due to their wages being min wage most of the time. Simple fix: pay workers more

businesses have a hard time finding employees. ANd when resturants hire, they either hire a few great employees but majority are meh. and if less people tip, then the employees dont get paid wel. and even if the employee has faith that one day it will turn around, there's no point if they literally cannot afford to get to work. it cost money to get to work. so you need to pay more to keep employees and low retention cost more than high retention. raise the cost of the food create minimum wage, eliminate MANDATORY tipping. now you will have more of the best workers than a bunch of meh workers.
