Watch our BORA install video by following this link! • SAFETY FIRST! HOW TO I...
I'm asked almost daily on how to improve lateral stability of tractors. Many of us tractor owners aren't blessed to live on perfectly flat ground it once you've felt that tippy feeling, it's hard to forget about it the next time you hop on your tractor. So, how do you improve lateral (side to side) stability of your tractor? I believe it's a combination of solutions including lowering your center of gravity (COG) as well as simply widening your tractor's stance.
If you add more weight to your tractor that is closer to the ground, then you will be improving your center of gravity. Common solutions to achieve a lower COG include adding liquid ballast weight to your tires as well as adding wheel weights to your rear tractor wheels. Of course, the added benefit is also counterweight while using your loader as well as additional traction when pushing with your bucket or plow or pulling a ground engaging tool.
The other popular way to improve lateral stability is to add wheel spacers to your machine. This is something that tractor owners have been doing since the dawn of time. One thing that you do want to consider is if you have a mid mount mower deck. This could potentially interfere with your rear gauge wheels or brackets depending on how wide of a spacer you purchase. Take some good measurements ahead of time to see what you can get away with. However, I have seen some folks do away with their rear gauge wheels or even cut off or reweld in a new location to allow for a wider spacer.
BORA wheel spacers by Motorsport Tech are Made in the USA, made to order, available in aluminum and steel, and in 1" up to 6" increments. I'm proud to work with them as they offer a high quality solution at an affordable price to answer a common problem for us tractor owners. Always consult your local dealer or manufacturer to see if wheel spacers can be used on your machine. While I haven't seen any clear, concise statements that spacers void warranty, it should be up to you and your dealer to make that final determination.

When I was a kid on the farm back in the late 70s-80s, we had a Sears Craftsman garden tractor. I believe it was a 24 horse tractor. It had hydraulics, a small loader, rear (belt drive) tiller, front (belt drive) snowblower and, obviously, a mid mower. It also had an optional dual rear wheel kit from Sears and was very stable. Looking at your Deeres duals, the sidewalls appear to be touching. If so, that's not good. You need at least a couple inches of open space or the sidewalls WILL be damaged, either by rubbing together as they flex, or, by debris getting jammed between them. Look at ANY truck or large piece of equipment with duals and you'll see what I mean. It does look cool though. Our Craftsman wasn't old back then but, it would probably be considered "vintage" today. It was a silver tractor and you don't see many around these days, especially the way ours was equipped. That's the way dad ordered it out of the Sears catalog though.

One other issue you'll have to consider when adding wheel spacers is that you will probably end up with a FEL bucket that no longer covers the rear tire outside to outside width. This might also be applicable to rear 3PH implements like a box blade. Not being able to cover the rear tires can be a real detriment for many situations.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 4 года назад
Correct, want to consider it. Many snow plows and snow blowers are already wider than the tractor, land planes, rear blades, etc also can easily run wider than the machine. Some folks even run 60" tillers. So far, no concerns with running dual rear tires which are far wider than any spacer. In fact, I ran a 72" pusher (albeit only 3-4" of snow) and couldn't believe that it pushed it with ease even without additional ballast weight. Just a side note.

I own 9 JD dealerships in Canada and spacers will void your warranty if JD finds out. We install them on small equipment and have never had a problem. If there was an issue then we just dont mention that to JD when entering the warranty card
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 4 года назад
Do you have anywhere in warranty paperwork that states it voids warranty? I've never been sent a John Deere warranty document that states it voids warranty. Also, I've seen some models list spacers as an available option which seems to be just the opposite. Just seems to be a whole lot of confusion around it. Thanks for sharing and I'd love to buy your clean trade-ins!
@DD-be8ev
@DD-be8ev 4 года назад
@@GoodWorksTractors It doesn't specifically mention spacers but fine print in the warranty states any item altered or modified will not be covered under warranty. With that one line they have now said you void your warranty. So example, you put on spacers and a wheel bearing goes right after. If that dealer puts in the write up that there was spacers JD wont cover it. If they dont mention the spacers it may be covered. Then again a bearing is also considered a "wear item" and may not be covered depending on hours. I find that JD as a dealership owner has some of the strictest warranty around and will ask alot of questions about the maintenance history of the customers machine. I've had on numerous occasions pay for a customers bill out of my pocket because JD said they wouldn't cover something. Dont want to lose a customer especially a repeat customer over something that you think should be covered
@DD-be8ev
@DD-be8ev 4 года назад
@@GoodWorksTractors clean trade ins don't last very long here. Spacers are listed in the book and are an option, but an option that JD may say you have now altered the hubs. I've seen them go as far as void transmission warranty on a gentleman who put different size tires on. That one I ended up flipping the bill because JD wasn't budging and the customer has been with us for years
@ed-mo7ov
@ed-mo7ov 3 года назад
@@DD-be8ev My argument would be that putting a wheel spacer on doesn't alter or modify the actual hub. Drilling additional bolt holes into a hub is altering or modifying the actual hub itself. Merely bolting on a spacer doesn't alter or modify the actual hub itself. That's an issue that would have to argued in a court.

Just saw this video and heard the warranty claim about adding after market stuff to a product. Check out the Magnuson-Morris Consumer Protection Act which basically says a warranty is not voided by an after market product that does not change the operation of the product it is placed on. Had a Harley dealer tell me a trailer hitch would void the warranty on my Trike, showed him the act and he suddenly decided it would not. Manufacturers do not like to mention Magnuson-Morris but will follow the law.

Something to consider...There is a risk that the spacers could crack. Although the risk is minimal, there are rare situations where you might have one of the wheel spacers crack while operating the tractor. The most common reason for this issue to occur is an installation error or incorrect bolts being used, but since it is an add-on part, there is not always control over the quality that you can use. A vast majority of operators will never encounter this issue.

With dual wheels, I have to question the obvious and additional stress on axle bearings, bushings, seals (whatever) and possible axle wear that is likely to occur. Yes, your footprint weight is reduced due to additional foot print area on the ground. Still, additional stress has to incur on the standard tractor equipment.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 3 года назад
Why aren't you also questioning wheel spacers?
@dwayneloftice2326
@dwayneloftice2326 3 года назад
@@GoodWorksTractors same question applies to spacers. Placing the exerted weight farther from the tractor's axle rotating bearing point has got to result in higher stresses on the axle, bearing (hopefully not bushings) and seals. It's simple engineering analysis.....incidentally, which I are am!

From the Devil's advocate... How do you know these tractors aren't engineered to handle that type of load? Do you prioritize personal safety or equipment longevity? @GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 3 года назад
I hear ya. I highly doubt they were engineered to take wheel spacers or duals on these smaller machines. I only say that because otherwise I feel like there would be readily found information in manuals, brochures, websites for OEM offered spacer and dual setup solutions. However, they do recommend ballasting tires and even stacking wheel weights on many models, so there is some design consideration for an additional load. Albeit, not necessarily a load protruding further away from the axis. Not challenge perceived, I worked with engineers for many years. I'm not one myself, but like to pretend sometimes :)

Not sure on that yet, I bought them to try it out. Some will say that they won't help on the front axle as it pivots anyways. Also, gotta be careful not getting too wide of spacers and turning tires into the loader supports on some models.

I just added spacers to my 1025R and found that the new wheel weights I bought from John Deere will not bolt on. The studs on the spacers protrude further than the wheel bolts did. When I measured the difference, it seems that the wheel weights hit the studs a quarter inch before they seat properly. Is it just me, or has anyone else had this problem?

What do they use for liquid ballast these days?
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 4 года назад
RimGuard, TL-90, washer fluid, water (in the south) are common solutions. JD's manuals still state a mixture of calcium chloride and water.

They (tire shop) normally recommend running a little less than normal as it'll allow it to ride a little smoother.

Here in Michigan the local place uses beet juice and oil to fill the tires doesn’t rust your rims and really adds the weight

I'm getting tired with John Deere as manufacturer. They sell a light "tractor" made with cheap and below average materials which is not usuable at all. The tractor is expensive enough and If you want a heavy, ready-to-use machine you have to pay again. Rear hydraulic is also Missing, no metall, there are a lot of Problems Overall. I've decided to sell my JD 3032E and buy a Yanmar, or a Tym. they are far more a tractor that these light E series will ever be. John Deere really needs to improve their quality, or lower the prices to stay in competition.

As I recall, GWT gave his opinion on the worst tractors to buy. There were two specific Kubota models, all the BX series, several JD E-models and most interestingly, the all the rest of the OTHERS other than Kubota and JD. You might want to review that video.
