For newbies one thing I'd add is to not be scared of destroying most resources like mushrooms as theyre abundant and will regrow (since the last update), and also don't hoard items, ive seen so many people having to leave valuables because they never dropped off those random trinkets they dug at mosaic at base or at pk
people need to be told items do not despawn in this game!! I realize how many people don't know this since they're used to games like Minecraft. if you drop something it will stay there forever unless tampered with by other beings (mainly just don't drop rocks/minerals as moleworms can eat them, and obviously food will spoil and leave rot)
@@SugaryOats question, do items stay existing even if the servers shut down and reopened? Or is it like terraria wherre everything left over is erased?
@@fatnootz3466 no it stays even when the servers are closed! the only way for items to disappear is if something moves them (a player or a mob, but that basically doesn't happen with things other than minerals and food) or if you delete the world haha :o)
Tip to help with new players survival is (outside of insanity creatures) run away from enemies that are dangerous to you. Literally every enemy will eventually lose interest if you run for long enough, so it's probably the most reliable way to deal with enemies that are a serious danger.
agreed. if you don't feel prepared to fight something (don't have healing items/food, armour, weapons) then just leave it alone. the majority of enemies in the game can easily just be dealt with at another time.
A newer tip that has been made possible as of just a couple updates ago, I would highly recommend turning off the death timer in the world settings, by default you get I think two minutes after the last or only player dying before the world resets itself, but that just is not enough time. There have been several times where I know the location of a touch stone, but just didn't have enough time to reach it and lost the world anyway, or been sitting right next to a touch stone but unable to revive because it was night time, sometimes the nights are even longer than the death timer which makes it impossible to revive, I've even had times where I could have easily revived, but my monkey brain hit the "reset now" button without even thinking about it after unpausing because I'm used to just hitting a respawn button in other games. If you outright disable the death timer it really makes dying so much less stressful
If I die in my really long world and I’m too far away from my piles of life amulets, I just rollback. I probably should just turn the timer off but eh.
Hey great job! Your video will help a lot of new people! I have a tip for beginners for are afraid of going insane; Dont pick flowers as your first choice! There are so many alternatives to raising your sanity than flowers. Flowers are only renewable in two ways; make a net and catch butterflies (who wont spawn if youve picked all the flowers), flowers also regrow during spring rains. My alternatives to flowers for sanity are cooked green mushroom caps, they hurt only a little to eat but restore a large amount of sanity. Or how about using some of that silk from easy spider kills to make a top hat to raise sanity from the day! You can also cook blue mushrooms and eat them for sanity but they are better to eat raw for that sweet sweet healing. The best alternative of all that is ready pretty much day one is cooked cactus flesh that grows year round in both deserts. Just be sure to wear a piece of armor when picking and if you have a friendly wormwood they can give you the bramble husk to completely negate the thorn damage! It restores hunger, health, and lots of sanity! There are also some nice crockpot dishes like taffy, banana shake, etc.
@@BiddoBamss I think you should include some basic farms so people don’t have food struggles. Setting up bee boxes is always a good idea, and making a pile of berry bushes is fine until winter. Also making a guide on basic farming mechanics would be cool
The one about the character choice is the best tip in my opinion. My main character I play is Willow. For people who don't know, Willow is known as a grieffing character on online servers. Even tho I knew that, Willow was still my favourite character since is the first ever character I played in DS back in the day like 5 years ago. Quite funny, I actually never got kicked from a server for being Willow. I was always really nice to people and they were nice with me too! It shows how you should always pick the character you like and love to play and never get intimidate by the other players saying the character pick is bad!
Yeah, the newer players - yourself included - never witnessed "The Great Willow Griefs" from back in the day. And I mean way back - we didn't even have statues yet, or the new characters like Wortox. Anyway, I usually insta-ban Willow picks, but you're right - play whoever you want!
Whoever bans people just because of their character is stupid. And yes, I know some people use Willow to grief, but is that everyone? No. Griefers can be any character, including those who you think aren’t griefable
I main Willow as well, mostly because I have a hard time occasionally finding light when the night sneaks up on me. I've joined servers and just minded my own business just to get banned before I can even get a science machine up, and other players have been pretty mean about kicking me just for playing as the character I'm comfortable with and sometimes I just have to open my own server because no one wants to take the chance on you.
@@Yourlocalbacterium From my experience - and everyone else's experience for that matter - not every Willow is a griefer. ... Just the overwhelming MAJORITY of them. So, the math is simple. Allow Willow to stay, burn down the base, and have to deal with rollbacks and whatnot. OR Insta-ban Willow, and have a nice game. That character doesn't add anything, nor is the specific player behind the screen that much of a loss to anyone. Simple, yes. Quite effective, too. Stupid? Not really. Nothing is lost for the people already playing, so :)
@@nikknight Yeah, it's not nice when you're part of a group, and the majority-members of said group ch!mp out, get a bad rep, and then you have to deal with the consequences, despite not being a ch!mp yourself. Luckily, I have 2 solid pieces of advice: 1) Play on your own servers, which you already figured out. 2) Don't play Willow. Willows are griefers, and that's just a deeply ingrained knowledge. Sucks to suck.
one thing that many MANY new players need to know about, is to not be afraid. The caves are often times safer than the surface, and most bosses have very predictable and dodge-able attacks. Play on worlds without permadeath to learn how to play first though no harm in that at all.
Thanks for this video! I’ve played DS for years and now my friend and I are getting into DST and there’s so many new things even I didn’t know. The moving stagehand at night is terrifying 😂
Another beginner friendly tip: You don’t need to have a campfire. For the first few days. You can use a torch to go out and explore during night! So that you can prepare more. made at 8:01 Edit: that’s the time for the end nvm lol
I got back into DST majorly recently. I've been playing it since beta, so fuck, 10 years? and it's very dear to me. I got back into it, having played 70 hours in the last 2 weeks, and finally got up to 1000 hours on Together. and it's really neat to see a DST youtube start their channel, I saw your first video very shortly after it was posted and have been excited by your content since. I may know all this info but I still like hearing you talk about it. it's really fun and I'm happy to be along for the ride :)
There I am Gary, there I am! Great guide! I especially like your brief character intros, it was incredible to see them summarized so concisely. I got my partner back into the game recently, and I totally flubbed trying to explain the characters to them.
but starting off in autumn and then winter is way easier than dealing with spring and summer. those are WAY more difficult to deal with than autumn and winter.
Haha, this video was actually really quick to make. I wrote and scripted it last night and this morning got the footage, dubbed and edited it! If it wasn't for the challenge videos needing me to do an entire playthrough, then rewatch said playthrough to write a script and edit, then those would be out at this rate too. :>
For new players, I’d recommend playing wurt. I know that initially not being able to eat meat may be hard, but once you learn how locate lunar island and sail to it, you can live off of only the stone fruit and kelp it provides. If you’re having trouble with combat, wurt can set up merm houses which serve as excellent hound defence. You can also hire the merms for chopping trees and mining rocks, aswell as make a merm king for boosted stats to you and your merms. To me, the only downside to wurt is that you have to buy her, or turn all of your cosmetics into spools for her.
Or just play maxwell because he's cool and absurdly good Sanity? Just don't cast spells for a bit I need alot more wood for boards. Find a large group of trees and cast shadow workers Hounds are coming soon and I don't know how to kite them in groups. Shadow fighters will get the job done I need more nightmare fuel because I spent alot on getting wood and fighting enemies. Shadow prison and shadow sneak can help just use them on rabbits and you'll have tons of them Need more beard hair for meat effigies? Find a bunnymen village and hammer their houses then move them up put the houses in a cage and bait them to a spot cast shadow sneak and then some shadow fighters and congrats you have monster meat for meatballs beard hair for meat effigies and more nightmare fuel Besides for the bunnymen everything I said here can be done right after spawning in which wurt needs a TON of setup for and SERIOUSLY YOU'RE RECOMMENDING GOING TO LUNAR ISLAND TO NEW PLAYERS THE DOWNSIDE TO WURT IS NOT THAT THEY'RE A SPOOL CHARACTER IT'S THE FACT THEIR SETUP IS TERRIBLE AND CAN'T EAT MEATBALLS FOR AN EASY SOURCE OF HUNGER
Thank you for recommending the natural placement mod, I get so pissed off trying to build a nice looking base when I end up with crooked structures placed in weird places because of how large their range requirement is
I love Woodie, Sure Maxwell can get wood faster but I love the simplicty of leveling a forest with little to no prep or worrying about being squishy. Moose form is nice too for spiders, monkeys and such :)
Thank you for the video! Don’t starve was the first game I ever bought on steam. I played a lot and then forgot about it. I also bought DST but never played it because I thought that you can play only with someone. Recently, I discovered that it’s not true! I am now discovering the game all over again after 10 years..
Of course! The game is fantastic. If you're new to playing it singleplayer then don't be afraid to turn down some of the world settings or even use mods to lower boss hp (if playing on pc!) since the game is still balanced around team play. Either way you can still have fun with it without changing a thing solo, just expect it to be a uphill battle at times :)
Also another few hot tips, if you don’t know who to choose Wolfgang, Willow, Wilson, Wendy and Wortox are arguably the simplest to get the hang of, they can be hard to master but you’ll pretty much immediately know what their abilities are and that gives you more time to focus on learning the world which is incredibly important
Tip for more advanced players the daywalker (nightmare werepig) during his second phase if you want him to lunge instead of slaming his fist just hit him with any ranged weapon like ice staffs and fire staffs! helps speed along the fight as he doesnt get tired atfer using the slam.
traps are great for frogs but also when you want to relocate spider eggs (3rd tier of spider nest) it just makes it much easier to deal with green ones since you can also trap any spider other than queen obiously
I'm a Wortox main because he fits my play style, I don't want to have to take forever dodging attacks to defeat a boss, so I just stock up on armor and top off my souls to tank bosses and other threats
other tip would be not to pick flowers if possible since they can spawn butterflys to restore 8 hp and 9,5 hunger you don't need weapon at all to kill butterflys (there is small chance for butter to drop instead)
i would disagree, picking up flowers in the early game is a good way to get Rot(since petals rot pretty quicky) which can be used to Fertilise bushes you pick up, as well as granting you 5 Sanity after picking them up, not to mention that Flowers, along with other things regrow during Spring, or you can place them yourself by using a Butterfly caught with a Bug Net
@@szpadelexe4395 true but I would not recomend doing unless you know where you want to build first base so you can hunt for more easly butterflys or save it for like winter sanity pakage
Here to plug in my og card before this channel gets to 1k. Heavily underrated and the recent influx of viewers are immensely deserved. Also I would love a character video. Recently bought the game for a bunch of friends and I love to know some character archetypes so i can suggest some characters depending on their playstyles and what works for them.
Haha, no matter how big I may or may not get, I'll never forget you guys. If it wasn't for comments and support like this, I'd probably not be enjoying this as much as I have been!
That's why I put their picture up when saying "Save for some fringe examples" (although it does sound like i'm saying "say" instead of "save" funny bri ish acent moment) :) Although they still do attack in a circle around themselves it is much smaller then it used to be, ontop of their directional attack.
Armor math isn't quite right. Whichever piece of armor was equipped more recently will take the bulk of the damage. So equip your Thulecite Suit and THEN a Football Helmet to preserve the durability of the Suit long.
i just started playing this game. i know nothing about it. every beginners guide talk like i know wtf there even talking about. i dont know about the stats the abilities or anything omg
There's quite a few mechanical differences but ultimately they're the same-ish game in concept. Mainly, Don't Starve (Single) gives you access to the DLCs Shipwrecked and Hamlet (which are entire new worlds you can travel to with new mechanics) Don't Starve Together is mainly focused on an expanded and enhanced Don't Starve minus the DLCs, so functional ocean content, expanded caves and ruins, more bosses, characters and interactions! Plus Together is actively being worked on by Klei whilst Singleplayer has recieved its final update as of last week!
@@BiddoBamss Oh? Solo DS will no longer be worked on? The end of an era, I suppose. What was the last update, if you can let me know? And I'll add that - Don't Starve Together is a more "complete" version of the game, in my opinion. It certainly feels like it has a lot more content, though I'm sure arguments can be made either way.
The "Mega update" update, released April 27th, at the end of the blog post they put: "We expect this to be the last major update for the original Don't Starve and and we don't expect any further update announcements in the near future. We will make this update available for all other platforms as soon as we can, but it's going to take a while to get all of this out there." End of an era for sure!
How does this helpnew players? There is nothing useful explained. How am I supposed to get hammer? How do I recover HP, how do I get to unlock new crafts? Thereis nothing, you expect me to know how to build a boat but youdon't explain any basics of the game, really bad guide
