Rebecca, I don't follow you assiduously, but I really admire you. I like the contrast between you, a successful and capable businesswoman, who has chosen a certain level of sophistication in her life and her clientele, while at the same time, you haven't forgotten your humble origins and you are really compassionate and kind with your viewers. Your passion for your job is shining through, and it never feels like people are beneath you. I am really endeared right now. Thanks.

Hey Rebecca, do us ALL a solid by telling the manufacturers of the world's curtains and drapes who sell stuff to Walmart and Target and TJMaxx and every other store that THE WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND 84 INCH WINDOWS!!! I believe THAT is the real problem. No matter where I go, and I mean EVERYWHERE I go, all of the drapes and curtains are only 84" long. I know that's "industry standard" but they've got to stop thinking that all of us in customer land WANT 84" window treatments....I know I sure don't!! I have bypassed some really cute curtains strictly because they were only 84". Like you, I like to take mine up to the ceiling - including my shower curtain! - because it just makes it look better. For 8 foot ceilings folks, that's 96 inches, for 9 foot ceilings, it's 108 inches. Makes a world of difference!

You are absolutely right a 100%. But Rebecca has been given us a solution. Buy an extra panel and add a band to them. Is going to take time for the curtains industry to take a leap. A lot of people are used to the standard size.

Jeez there are 90, 96 and 108, and 120 lengths if you look hard enough, already made, available for ages. Just Google it. I buy mine online and they are premade 96 and 108.

I look at your examples and I think. “Well, obviously that’s too short/narrow/dark.” Then I look at my problem space and I’m stumped! Thank you for giving such great illustrations and simple explanations!
@starsatnight3058
@starsatnight3058 Год назад
Great teacher! I've made that mistake - buying a darker panel against a white wall. I thought it would look rich and tie in with other fabrics in the room - but it makes the whole room dark. I also like those short rods that go sides of window as then no one is opening/closing them. They're just for decor/adding softness to the window. The window itself needs a shade/blinds that actually function for light control...and in the south, we NEED light control during summer days!....so funny ...as I continued to watch ....you said exactly THAT! Love that you said...panels are for your WALLS...not your WINDOWS!!!!

When drapes are almost pooling on floor, they get very dirty. I think an inch above the ground is more practical for real life family with kids, pets and open windows.

Thank you for adding the comment, when you can afford to do it. I feel like a lot of decorators forget that some of us are on a budget. My husband and I worked to pay off our very dated home and now we have the budget to update things like curtains. Thanks for the wisdom. I replaced window treatments in two rooms that are open to each other, one was orange and gold and the other was brown and blue (came with the house) with a white sheers and light tan drapes all the way across, wow what a difference it made! Thank you kindly :)

Rebecca you inspired me! I signed up for design sessions a couple years ago when I did a first pass update on my home and I put roller shades on all my windows and floor to ceiling curtains on the WALLS😂 I really enjoyed the look but I didn't have the funds to do a fuller more luxurious pleated curtain... and I never got around to hemming what I had so I had a puddle 😂 plus my kids had their hands all over the linen curtains making them quite wrinkled. Well. You inspired me to launder all my linens, and buy some luxurious triple pleated ones for my main living space, using the old ones to add fullness in my bedroom treatments since they are the same fabric and color. My home already looks so much better!! Curtains MAKE the room.

Rebecca, you are a recent discovery and I am having so much fun and learning a lot. However, you are commenting on the fact that windowtreatments are often too short. I apoligize upfront for sounding like a Suzy Homemaker but they catch dust and are a pain to hoover up. And a lot of people have a pet, those hairs are so tricky to remove from curtain hems. This way ( the too short way ) is so much faster and easier to clean.

Thanks for this video. I already knew most the basics, like touching the floor and almost or to the top of the window and dress the wall. However not making them a functional piece was not part of my plan. I’m glad I watched this video. I’m in the process of updating a guest room. I now know the drapes and blinds are independent. Never thought to much about that aspect. This just saved me a design mistake. I plan to have linen Roman shades and linen drapes. Both will be a white color.

Love the visual of the images and suggested corrections. Thanks for making the screen image of your computer larger in OUR screen image. That greatly helps. You might also consider using a pointer (even a pencil) instead of your hands so we can see the areas you're pointing out. That's not a comment on your hands!, but is a comment on being able to see more of the image itself. You might also consider putting pieces of paper to cover areas you want our eyes to "disregard." I've always loved the "draw on the photos" technique, too. Thanks for bringing that back in a few cases. All very interesting...

I appreciate and agree with all your window treatment ideas and comments. We have a large home with a generous size master bedroom. The bay window has lovely custom warm white sheer fabric blinds. As the room overlooks a nice pond, I have just allowed the blinds to be enough at the windows. There are no other windows in the room. As I am doing a few updates I would like to add stationary drapes and looking for the best way to accomplish that. And do I match the blinds or the walls (warm taupe) or…? I usually prefer neutral colors for things that have long life and pops of color with things that are more transient (pillows, decor etc,). Thank you very much for your suggestions! Joanie

With the inch too short thing, I can’t have my curtains pooling in the floor. I have young children still and we have dogs. I feel like it’s better to be an inch off the floor than for it to be getting nasty puddled in the floor. I have to find a balance between style and practicality.

What do you think about big louver Shutters. I live in CO and have them on every window in our house. I combine them with drapes. I have hung drapes almost to the ceiling and they "frame" the shutters so I can open and close the shutters. I also had hubby install dimmer switches recently for our pot lights so they really look nice with the shutters/drapes in the evening! With the cold weather here the shutters work as a great thermal barrier in the winter and with our high elevation they also work to keep the house cooler in the summer when I shut the south side of the house. They are UV and so far they have not faded. They were costly but we love them!

The section on hidden storage brought back happy memories. My grandparent's farmhouse, which was built in the late 19th century had hidden storage under the staircase. It could be accessed two ways. One was by removing the second step. The other was through my grandparent's bedroom closet. We were rarely allowed to enter that way. I used to bump down those stairs on my bottom for fun. All of the curtains were lace. After washing and starching my grandmother would stretch them on a wooden frame with lots of nails to dry. Wicked thing that. The old farmhouse is still located about four miles southwest of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Welcome to Sooner Land.

For those of us who 8 ft from floor to ceiling it would be so nice if more manufacturers made panels at 90” rather than 84” which are too short or 96” which are too long. 90” gives enough space for a rod, header and for the panels to “kiss” the floor. Over the past few years I have changed up all my window treatments and what a difference it made! Linen or linen like is my best friend! I love your trick about “training” them. I also use paper towel or toilet paper tubes cut to 2” behind grommet type panels. Perfectly spaced and you can’t see them! 😊

That is odd because I have 8ft ceilings and 96 are always the correct size for my windows.

@@vaderladyl It does depend on what type of panels and rod you are using.

This came at the perfect time!! I have a very small 1920’s house. I have no option but to push my sofa against the wall with my front window. I never knew curtains shouldn’t be pulled back and forth!! We need privacy at night. My husband and I have been bickering about the curtains, he wants to have them above the couch!!! God, no!!! The answer is to get blinds. Thank you for helping my cause!

Yep, my ceiling to floor drapes in my living room rock. While I usually avoid covering my windows at all cost, in this case, I am in a rental and I am hiding the installed vertical blinds, so my drapes are slightly into the windows. These drapes look great and never move. But, my bedrooms are all problems. I would like them to be attractive, but I want light during the day and absolute blackout at night. I yank my blackout drapes around and they look like it.

Hi Rebacca, I stumpled upon your channel window treatments and I some of your tips peaked my interest. Here is the conundrum: I reside in Scandinavia, and it gets quite cold in the winter, so heaters are in most cases placed under the windows (I can send a picture) which allows to make the cold air circulate upwards. In this case, it would be counterproductive to have curtains that go all the way to the flore as they would block of the heat. I do understand that according to you, window treatments are decorative more than to block the light. However, the way the windows are designed, it is not possible to have shades, as they would block the opening of the windows. (again I am happy to send pictures) . I would love to have your tips on what to do.

I’ve had a window treatment book for over 15 years and that is not a new concept. But it is beautiful. I have to agree going to the ceiling with drapes, especially if you have high ceilings makes the room look elegant.❤

My husband and I watched this together, and the way you explain everything, especially how you illustrate the window treatments directly on the pictures, makes it so easy to understand. You truly transform the space in seconds, even without the fabric in place. Thank you so much for your content, and an early thank you for the upcoming transformation of my master bedroom window treatments, inspired by you 🍎."

Hi Rebecca, I joined the Design Session but I am unable to log on. I need to learn more about hanging and placing my window treatments in the right places. How to I get back to Design Session??? Thank you for being on You Tube and starting a new chapter in your life.

I have just found you on RU-vid. I am enjoying all your tips! I wish I had know about this video ahead of time and sent in a photo. On the front wall of our house, we have a dining room that connects to our great room. My dining room window is a normal window, but the living room window is flanked between two built in bookcases. Right now I have white faux wood blinds on both of them, but I would love to hang sheer curtains. Unfortunately, since the living room window appears to be set back, with no wall space to add window treatments, I can’t figure out what to do. Thank you for doing these videos! I hope you will address something like this down the road.

Ooo that symmetrical dining room with the dark wood…just replace the middle art with that thick frame with the same size modern art in lighter colors and minimal frame or frameless canvas. So elevated in a nice room!
