In this video I take you through everything you need to know about caring for sansevieria plants - also known as snake plants. Sansevieria are one of the best indoor plants for beginners, as they're so low maintenance and easy to care for!
DIY FERTILISER VIDEO:
• Amazing DIY Plant Fert...
ADVICE ON HOW TO TREAT ROOT ROT:
- Carefully take your plant out of its pot and remove as much of the soil as you can from around its roots. I sometimes rinse the roots under the tap/hosepipe in order to get rid of as much soil as possible.
- If the root rot has impacted your plant's leaves, give them a little trim back, so that the treated root system won't have to work so hard to support and feed the plant - giving it a much better chance at healthy growth once it's back to its normal, healthy self. I know it's not nice to have to do this, but it gives it a much better chance.
- Take a look at the roots that have been effected most and prune them back to the point where they start to look healthier (chop away any dead brown areas). Make sure you use a clean pair of scissors or blade to do this so that it remains as sterile as possible, and dispose of the old soil.
- Make sure you thoroughly clean and disinfect the pot it was in, and use new soil to carefully pot it back in (I have a guide to repotting blog on my website if you've got any queries in regards to this). I've linked the soil mixes that I like to use in this video.
- Once it's repotted, give it a good water, and make sure you regulate this carefully over the coming weeks as your plant adjusts. Avoid using fertiliser for at least a few months whilst it adapts (you don't want to send your plant into shock, plus there's plenty of natural nutrients for it to enjoy in the new soil).
- To help prevent this issue again in the future, besides careful and monitored watering, I always keep a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide in the house and treat my plants with a diluted measure if I suspect they may have root rot. Hydrogen Peroxide adds oxygen to the soil and is really effective, not just at treating root rot, but allowing your plant to absorb nutrients from the soil.

Perfect timing! I just repotted my mom's sansevierias saving them from over-watering and root rot. I peeled off most external leaves and got to the core of the plant, which was healthy, and planted that in dry well-draining soil. I plan on watering for the first time in 2 weeks. One of them had no roots and was starting to fall over so I cut off the leaves and I'm now propagating them in water ... 3 months is a long time to wait😅 Happy new year!

Amazing - it sounds like you've done all the right things and I'll keep my fingers crossed it all bounces back to health soon! Yeah they're slow plants to propagate (I actually think it's been about 2 months... my concept of time at the moment is very warped) 😂

I always put my sanseveria plants outside during the summer. They release stems with very nice flowers which make a sweet sirup. I always put these droplets on my fingers and taste it 😅🤭 but you can't use it for pancakes. It's just not enough. The flowers smell very nice too.

My question is about pot size. I looked like my snake plant might be getting too big so I transferred it into a larger pot that sits on the floor. It’s been a while and seems to be doing ok, but I wonder if I transferred it into a pot too large. What do you recommend? Also, do you think they like to be among other plants in groups in a great spot….facing south?

I bought a lovely bushy snake plant at the start of lockdown. Overwatering led to root rot and I managed to save 2 fronds which i propergated and planted in well draining soil. In summer I water every 2 weeks-ish and in winter it's monthly. I let mine dry out completely now.

Nice - I'm so glad you managed to save it! Letting them dry out is such a good idea x

As I said in the video, overwatering/inadequate drainage is such a common cause of issues with these plants. I'm glad this helped and I hope you manage to treat it x

Hey Claire! I discovered your channel today and have been binge watching like it is the new series of Stranger Things lol. Off the back of that i have just bought a Monstera deliciosa and a Devil’s ivy to add to my snake plant 🤦‍♂️😂. Can i ask what soil mix you use for the snake plant, is it the same one in your "House Plant Care Tips For Beginners" video just with the house plant soil swapped out for succulent soil? These videos are a great help to loads of people. It will be good to see your shop up and running again soon 👍
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 года назад
Hahaha amazing, thank you so much! So for my snake plants I'll usually use a mix of succulent soil with a bit of added grit and orchid bark (just to create a really nice chunky, well draining mix) 💚

So weird! I had my snake plant in a dark bathroom for a few months and it grew several new leaves but they were very pale compared to the existing leaves. Once I moved it to a bright spot the light colored leaves darkened to the color of the rest of the plant. I'm surprised that your snake plants did quite the opposite of that...
