The best dubbing brush video I've seen. Nov 2023.

I appreciate your candidness. Yes, it all made sense immediately ONCE you said “stiffer fibres on outside”. However, as I’m just beginning to learn how to make my own dubbing brush... I truly enjoyed the step-by-step process, and yours is the first video/info that I’ve learned the most from. Thanks kindly

I’ve tried making a couple brushes and the tips and techniques in this video are going to help me out for sure, thanks. I’ve definitely added way to much material and not spread it out enough and it’s been a lot of trial and error for me also. Again thanks and I find a lot of your videos to helpful keep them coming and good luck with the trout opener in a couple days.

How cool was that ? Very. Looking at the frame and hooks I’m thinking I could make that. The wire would certainly cut down on my clumsiness with dubbing loops and make a more resilient fly. A good winter project for sure. Thanks.

Thanks for making the video!!! I've been looking for some tips to increase the ease of making these brushes without the small sections of material loss and without the longer lengths of material rolling over so much. Currently, it takes soooo long to pick out a usable brush! Thanks!! BEAUTIFUL brush!

Hi Seth--Thanks for sharing your experiences with the process of making dubbing brushes! I have the same table from Bill, and had many of the same struggles that you have found ways around. I appreciate you sharing your experiences, as it saved me extra time and money (in materials). My 9 year old son and I met you at Troutfest in Winneconne this winter--we are still hoping to make our way to the U.P. when allowable to fish with you! Best wishes and many blessings to you.

Hey wanted to to give a shout out on your tip of picking the fibers vertical in the first part of the spinning. It really helped getting a nice even brush. I used to tie until semi tight and start brushing them out. Worked sometimes well but I would get gaps. This seems to eliminate that problem. Just tied up a dz really nice brushes. Thanks!!

Picked up this same dubber from Schere's shop. LOVE IT! He recommended using it with just the hand wheel an no drill. Tried that and love the control you have over the spinning!

I’ve had the opportunity to use the fly I designed using this brush and it is incredible! It’s pretty similar to the one you tied in a video using the brush but has a pacchiarini dragon tail, a rattle and a foam popper reverse tied at the back of the front hook . It’s a kona BGC 3/0 back hook, a 20 or 40mm shank and a kona BGC 6/0 front hook. I used a laser dub head for simplicity. It walks the dog better then any fly design I’ve tried, even better then the Optimus swine. The only change I made to the brush was for the 3.5” big fly fiber I use SF blend instead to add extra bulk and density to in theory push more water. Just wanted to thank you again for your great instructional video and encourage other muskie guys to try this brush.

Very informative video! I just started making brushes and have already wasted materials. I think it’s because of not “sandwiching” the materials as you showed and that I started spinning too fast too soon. I also think I haven’t spun tight enough, so that when I remove the brush it loosens too much. Thank you for this video, I’m fixing to go try it again. 😉

Great Video, Thanks. Very informative. I´m gonna try making my own brush bench and after watching how much the side to the drill twisted up in comparison to the stationary side made me wonder if you see the idea of being able to swap sides with the drill to give a more even twist up as a good idea?? This might be helpful when using the wire in S which has 0.003 in diameter, that I think would break more easly with so many turns on one side. For example for making smaller (Shorter Barbed) brushes for the Game Changer or just smaller Pike/Trout lures. Would be great to hear your thoughts on this before I start building. Take care and tight lines, Michael James.

For those tangles right tight to the core use your slicker brush and kinda dig it in and brush perpendicular to the wire. You will get every single tangle out by doing that.

Late to this party but the instructional quality of this video is elite! I'm wondering if having a drill on both sides would tighten the brush more uniformly. Obviously would still go slow early. Also wondering if fine braided wire would work well. I'll definitely be building a setup for myself. Thanks!
@darkwaters5217

I’ve never noticed the need to have something that turns both sides. In the end it’s all tight enough, however, if you find something let me know! Thanks.
@Ghreybeard19

Since one end of your Brush is twisted tighter than the other, would it help if you also rigged up another drill to the looser side?

Fantastic Seth! I've been able to get the smaller fibers into a brush but struggled with the longer fibers. Your technique works very well and I will be incorporating them into making a long fiber brush. By chance do you have a video of tying that articulated fly? I'll check your website and facebook site as well (and will follow on Instagram). Thanks!

Larry Voltz I don’t have a video for that fly up yet. However, I just picked up a bunch more dubbing brush materials from Bill Sherer, so I’ll be spending up some more brushes very soon and then I will get to putting together a time video. Thanks for the comment

New to brushes. Plan to start spinning some soon. How would you recommend storing? I was leaning toward Plano bait storage boxes or totes. Thought the materials would end up matted, especially the longer ones. Suppose they could be brushed out before using. Your thoughts?
@darkwaters5217
@darkwaters5217 4 года назад
I see guys hang them a lot. Otherwise brushing them flat on both sides is fine. Most of the brushes you’ll buy have been brushed flat anyway. It’s actually easier to wrap that way.

Hi, I see this often, that the (motor) driven site gets much more turns then the other site. I think I will try a device that I can turn from both sites.

@@darkwaters5217 Hi, you are right. I don't also. But when I would build one myself, I would make the device hand turn-able from both sites. It makes such a big difference in evenly distribute the turns of the wire.
@johanwithag2432
@johanwithag2432 6 месяцев назад
@@darkwaters5217 Hi, I made a simple hand rotatable device that I can rotate from both sites. This give much better results because the windings are now evenly distributed over the wire. Also the tension on the winding are now evenly along the wire.
