In this video I walk through the process of replacing the shift solenoids on my 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. Two door version. Gray. Took me all day, but I got it done - AND IT WORKED!!! I'm not an expert but will do my best to answer questions ... best of luck, YOU GOT THIS!

WARNING! Above the solenoids there is a linkage rod from the shifter to a plunger that travels in and out of the transmission. I accidentally knocked one end loose while changing the solenoids and didnt notice it. I put the whole car back together and had NO GEARS at all. Had to all come apart again to reattach. There is a little black clip that holds the front end of the rod on. Great video, though. You made this job possible .

Can confirm did the same thing. I put a rubber clamp on the plunger after I finally fished it out to not have to repeat that mistake. You could probably wrap the attachment point in some self adhesive tape if you don't have a safe clamp but you definitely want to do something.

Not really a cap, more like a metal clip. If I remember right it looked like the metal clips that slid over pens to keep them in your pocket.

Just an FYI, that original TCC sensor you got was the correct sensor. But it is actually located further down and towards the front of the transmission. The one you changed right next to the shift solenoids is actually a pressure control solenoid (EPC) . Just to help anyone else when getting parts.

Is that all the solenoids/sensors needed.? Pressure switch circuit low is the code that scans in my pontiac g6

This comment needs to be on top. I would have been very upset to have replaced my EPC solenoid with a TCC solenoid, then put it all back together and still have the same problem with stalling at stop lights.

Just completed this repair with help from this video. Solenoid A was burned, solenoid B seemed OK. Good thing as with 2 floor jacks and 2 jack stands and me trying everything with all motor mounts disconnected, I could only get the side cover to 3 1/2 inches or so gap, way less than yours and was barely able to get the top solenoid, A out. Was going to change both but didn't want to risk the big fat chance of losing a clip into the tranny somewhere or just changing the one solenoid A, that's what I did. Must be what being a dentist feels like. But it appears to run perfectly. Thx.

The only thing I would add is on my 2011 HHR I had to unbolt the ABS and also the plastic drive shaft ring that is on the inside has to be put back in place. Excellent video.

Great video! I also had an issue with the transmission cooling lines, so I had to remove those. Afterwards, I ended up being able to move the side cover around more to where I could get to everything decently. I could actually get to it from underneath with both hands.

Our 2008 Cobalt has a generic P0700 code and the transmission will not shift into high gear. I wonder if it will be detrimental to the transmission if I just drive it like this. No long trips. Thank you for this video, if I have to replace the solenoids I know what I am up against.

I actually don’t know what that is, but I know what you’re talking about… It slides in and out really easy? Mine slide inside, and I had to fish it out, that was a pain, but it did come out.

My wife's just started going insane a couple of weeks ago. Now its really bad all of the sudden. Couldn't get it to do it at all for 2 weeks now I have a code for shift solenoid a stuck open. So I know what I have to do.

Did your cobalt have a shutter when accelerating before you did this because my cobalt has a shutter feeling when I get to 10mph and after that it has a slight jerk when shifting into 2 to 3rd gear And when the car is cold it goes up to 3,000 rpm before shifting to 3rd gear the first 2 shifts are fine and when it warms up it shifts better but I still have that shutter at 10mph. When I make a turn and re accelerate at 10mph it has a split second delay then it shifts so would that be shift solenoid or low fluid? It’s been doing this for a while. My cobalt has 161,000 miles.

I have experienced false positive for obd code P0842 as a result of wiring harness routing near oil filter shorting to ground. The P0842 is related to detecting the operation of the pressure switch that monitors the pressure that applies the lock-out torque converter. The switch was operating normally but obd was fooled into thinking it was detecting a pressure that was abnormal. To minimize damage the transmission controller then changes operating parameter values that are experienced by the driver as jerky shifting events. The voltage that the obd system monitors was abnormal as a result of the wiring harness shorting to ground and not the result of the transmission operating in an abnormal way.

At 08:30 there's that little metal rod with the hook at the end not attached to anything then at 13:16 you can see it's attached to the black thing at the bottom left. The black piece is retracted into the valve plate body on mine. Do you remember how you got yours reattached by chance?

Yeah that thing is a pain! Mine slid into the granny and I had to fish it out. I don’t remember exactly how I did it, but it moves super easy. So you could try lightly tapping next to it. If you have a steep enough angle it may work itself back out. I also tried a magnet which I think is how I got it out because the metal pet went in with it.

@@jimbosdiyautorepair4825 thanks, feel dumb for not trying a magnet, for some reason I thought the end was a hard plastic. I managed to get it with a custom made T shaped tool from some craft wire. She's back up and running now though so I really appreciate you putting this up. It's so much better when I don't have to go into something completely blind.

Thanks for such a great instructional video! Everything was clear and camera work was great! I just have one question, for the front motor mount. Did you have to remove the entire bracket for the mount? Or did you just remove the bolt that goes through the bushing?

For my process, I took the whole motor mount out… You might be able to get away with just taking the bolt out, but it clears up room for things to move around, especially that cover if you take out the whole mount.

I have a p0977, not sure if I should even go through the hassle of changing out the solenoid. My local transmission shop told me it won't fix that code and I need a new transmission. And the googling I've done for that code seems inconclusive. But the car is stuck in second gear And that seems common with these solenoid issues. Really don't want to change the whole transmission before trying this out though

@@ronaldmiller9648 yeah for the comparatively low cost of this project, I’d try this first if it were me… or at least open it up and see what’s going on. If your solenoids are good, then just return the new ones. … being stuck in second gear sucks … what you should do BEFORE opening up the tranny is check the nut that mounts the shift cable to the shift lever on the the top of the tranny. Mine comes loose from time to time preventing it from shifting appropriately. If that’s the problem your not out any money!!!

This is such a great video man thank you. However I broke the piece that connects the shifter cable like some of the other commenters. I’m curious if you have any information on that black piece that connects to the shifter cable. If you go to 12:06 you can see the black piece just to the left of the solenoid, it’s connected however at 8:33 it is missing. Did you remove it? I need to know more about that piece so I can fix it. My car only stays in drive, no neutral or reverse. Any info on that piece would be very appreciated thank you

It does come off, but if that black piece breaks I’m guessing you’d have to go get one from GM … sorry I can’t be more helpful on that one!!!

Hey buddy, I had the same issue and it was that piece you are speaking of that came disconnected. It's called a manual valve and you should be able to find it for a 4T45E transmission or of worse comes to worse go to a junkyard and remove just that piece from a car.

I have a 2005 Chevy classic. NOT a Malibu Classic. It has the 2.2 ecotec IT IS A 4 cylinder. I can see in this video that this one is a v6. There is limited info on the Chevy classic cause it was not a common vehicle. Although it looks exactly like a Malibu. I am trying to positively locate where the transmission pressure control solenoid is for 2005 Chevy Classic. ? I read that on most of transmissions the pan can be dropped and accessed there. The 04 to 07 Malibu shows access thru the side of the tranny like in this video. Looking for a video for my application. I appreciate the help.

Interesting insight! in my understanding “drain plug” and “level plug” both describe the function of this plug, so they are interchangeable. I’ll happily admit to being wrong! Please help me understand your perspective on that… I’m genuinely curious! 🧐

I had the same thing happen where mine looks different but everything online says it’s correct. Wondering if it’s just updated style? Or was it actually incorrect?

@@Alexander_j1997 Mine was actually incorrect even though some parts stores said it was the right one! If they don't look the same, I don't think it will fit or work correctly. While it COULD be an updated design, I'd doubt it.

Hello, I just bought a 2010 Cobalt yesterday that doesn't want to shift into first gear. I need to be rolling enough just to catch second gear then it slips for a second then goes to 3rd gear. It drives ok once I get to 4th . If I'm on a hill I'm pretty much Fd if people are behind me. The only code that came up is Power Train System "U0073 -00 control module communicator bus" but there is no engine light on the dash. Do you think this could be the problem hopefully? The guy I bought it from said it just started happening suddenly. Please lmk? Great video and Subbed!

I can’t say for sure, but I’d give it a shot… being that old it’s very likely solenoids are shot - so common on these!!! Disclaimer: I’ve not worked on a 2010 so it might be a different process - Not sure when the changed the trans design… Also, it IS possible that the nut that holds the shift cable to the shift lever on the top of the tranny came loose. So when you shift it’s not actually moving the shifter correctly … so definitely check that too. If that solves it you’ve fixed it for FREE!

So....... your video was great and now all the work is complete. But for some reason my ECM/Trans fuse 15amp won't stop blowing. Maybe I damaged the wiring harness plugging it back in?

Possibly if the wiring got caught in the case or something… or maybe the plug itself was melted damaged? … sounds like a short somewhere

I'm guessing putting the cover back on, I broke the connector to the torque converter solenoid. It was just laying in there. Which surprises me, it was blowing fuses. Did it have to be touching metal or grounding out? Because the connectors are fulling exposed to trans fluid and none of the connectors have sealed cushion connectors.

Go on google type in “parts interchange” and pull a part or something like it will come up.. pick any location and put your car information in and whatever part you need it will give you a list of any other car with same parts.

Does anyone know if the Powertorque solenoids work. I bought them at O'Reilly Auto Parts. What concerns me is that there is no black flow restrictor at the white end. Help..

Yeah Im working on the 2.2 engine. The shift solenoid I got looks the same except they don't have the little black plastic flow restrictors in them.

So i have an 05 cobalt i hit a pothole at about 25-30 then from there the whole day it seamed to slip before shifting to 3rd but once it did it shifted fine code came like others for a selinoid to be stuck open i had a shop tell me there computer said it was internal and a trusted life long machanic told me when he drove it i was better getting a trans to swap got one for 275 after tax im wondering now if i made right decision. Im 850 in after paying him and for seals and gaskets not to mention when he drove after the job was done it has same issue just sometimes shifted out of 2 and sometimes it wouldnt he just swapped 2 selinoids that looked like the one you replaced. Im hoping its solves issue so i dont have to look for another trans

Yeah sounds like solenoids to me. But also might be cv axles or something that broke when you hit the pothole… not sure that would impact the tranny like that… just a thought / guess

I do have a 162k miles I forgot to mention that as well as I drive for door dash got car from my sis for free so I can't complain to much with a few other repairs I did last yr I'm almost at 3k in so still cheaper that what I would have had to spend on something reliable. But also my guy told me that all that stuff was fine so I just think it's a mix of timing and hitting the whole I also put around 30k on it in 9 months after it had sat without being moved for 2 yrs. Took a few trips out of state as well as working 10hr days 7days a week. I seen urs after a few others and I now feel like opening it up since I have it in my yard to check see if it's bad I can shake it and can hear something moving inside. Any ideas on how I can check the gears to test if they are bad without goin into the gears

Gotcha … not really other than to shift it while it’s running to see how it behaves. But the solenoids is such a common problem on these I’s suggest you can be dang certain they are the problem

Another question the yard didnt give me the fluid from that trans my guy changed filter and new fluid any chance that cause could cause slipping issues

@@smokincajun4207 from my understanding, if the guy did a fluid flush, it’s possible but unlikely. If he just drained the fluid and added new fluid, it’s not very likely.

would a bad solenoid cause the car to not shift from 2nd to 3rd? I've got a friend with an 09 cobalt and his just doesnt want to shift into 3rd gear...it acts like it drops in neutral at around 40 mph...but what's bugging me is that it's not throwing any sort of code and not making any bad noises. it has us both confused.

I would guess the solenoid is the issue. It’s common for these transmissions to literally melt them (as you can see in my video). It’s possible that a fluid and filter change might help it (cheaper/less work if you want to start with that), but guess is that you’ve got a burned up solenoid … maybe others on this thread have a different opinion and want to chime in?

Hello I switched out the solenoids and codes are gone but the car goes forward in reverse and neutral. It still does go forward in drive. The fluid is topped off and I checked at the transmission and can see the shift linkage moving the transmission though gears. When it's in reverse the reverse lights do come on. I've replaced the transmission filter aswell. Before doing the shift solenoids the car worked properly just had the code. And when I replaced solenoids I replaced all 3 even though only my first one was bad. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to check, I'm assuming has to be a hydraulic issue but I've seen online this has happened to others after this procedure but no posted fixes or causes. Please help 🙏🏽

Whoa that’s weird! I have no idea! I’d say maybe you got your wires crossed when putting it back together, but reverse wasn’t part of that as far as I know…

@@jimbosdiyautorepair4825 I did pop the manual valve which is that little linkage everyone refers to but I placed it back on when I noticed since I saw many others had issues with it. Also as far as my solenoids I left the burnt end of my shift solenoid A attached to know that one goes to the very top and the other 2 were different colors so I know they went on right. I'm thinking I'm going to have to open everything back up again but I'm not sure what is the problem since I can't find anything else online. I also thought maybe that black switch where the shift linkage is at could be at fault but it's weird that the reverse lights do come on. Idk what to do since the few people on forums that had this issue never ended up posting the fixes :/

The only other thing I can think of is to check the nut on the top of the transmission that holds the shift linkage on. It can look like it’s shifting appropriately, but actually running loose. I had that problem so my car wouldn’t shift and to drive out of park. It would move, but not to the right spot. You might need to undo that nut and shift your transmission by hand to see if you can find reverse that way

Sounds like it’s not actually changing gears… could be the shift linkage which is a problem I also had …. check On the top of the transmission, where the shift cable connects to the transmission… there’s a nut that that holds the cable onto the post. Mine had come loose So I could move the shift lever, but it wouldn’t actually into gear. Check that nut at tighten if loose… hope that helps!

I did the same thing. Bumped the rod somehow and one end came loose. Had to repeat entire procedure to find it!! Was definitely faster the second time around!
