Flash photography is one of the hardest to master but with practice it will get easier. I use it for shooting both events and brand work. I hope these tips help you get further along that journey faster. Thanks for watching!

flash has come back in style with the point and shoot look and people really like the point and shoot camera flash

Thanks man, the vertical tip is very helpful 👍 sometimes even the lowest aperture and the best cleanest high iso isn't enough. Then I just end up pushing it in lightroom and spending way too much time editing. I'll try using my flash more often.

Glad to help! Flash is definitely the way to go in lower light 📸

Direct flash is exciting and the look is wicked. I use the cord with a bracket.

It sure is!! I’ve tried a bracket in the past but prefer having the flexibility of light angle x camera angle keeping the flash hand held. Thanks for sharing your technique 🙏🏻

Coming from the commercial side of photography, not of the commercial guys really knew how to use an OCF, so I took an entire class on it. Later I would have to travel with and do entire shoots with small flash! I'm glad to see the look back in style! Great job on the vid!

Wow thanks for sharing this! I would’ve thought commercial photographers are experts in all lighting.. good on you for taking a class! I love the look of direct OCF and am also glad it’s back in style. It’s a classic look and makes you feel like you’re in the room with the subject(s). Thanks for watching I’m glad you liked it🙏🏻

That was such an insightful video. I want to get into using flash as well but not sure yet where to start. I have a Nikon Z5 and one lens in my bag right now. Im looking to add a flash, possibly something I can use on and off camera. Any suggestions please?

Im not fully familiar with Nikon gear but there are some good quality 3 party flash options on the market. The things that I would recommend looking for are that it has TTL, a rechargeable battery that’s removable so you can get multiple to switch out, and a swiveling head so you can learn how to bounce the flash (you like that style). 📸 I hope this helps!

Fourth solution: flash bracket.

I agree with most of your tips, but vertical one seems to be cumbersome especially when you shooting with a heavier lens. I mostly just turn just in the opposite directions to avoid shadows.

What is your approach to in-camera white balance settings when using on-camera flash? Do you set a specific kelvin? Or something else

Great question:) I usually have my WB set to daylight while using an on camera flash. I do always have my cameras set to RAW just in case I need to adjust in post though. I would avoid AWB it’s just too inconsistent and increases your time in post correcting each photo individually.

Or instead of the sync cord you can just mount a bounce card on to your flash then no matter if you shoot vertically or horizontally, your light can still be above the level of your lens.

Great point! I prefer the direct flash look but this is a good solution:) thanks for sharing 🙏🏻

$70 for that remote cable is too expensive, better option is to buy a radio flash trigger which gives you even more freedom.

I agree it’s expensive for what it is but you never have to worry about the batteries being dead. Thanks for this suggestion and watching🙏🏻🙏🏻

You obviously never used SONY flashes on SONY cameras such as the A1 or the A9III. As a SONY shooter, I would like to use Profoto if they only could properly talk to my A1 and A9III. It's the communication of the flash processor with the camera processor, where SONY's flash is far superior, which leads to far more efficient use of the flash energy. As a SONY user, I found no speedlight , which better integrates than SONY's HVL-F60RM2 with my A1 and A9III. Just put it on the cameras hot shoe and start shooting in any mode. No fiddling, nothing. This is by far the best speed-light for SONY cameras. Nothing comes close. Period. With the A9III, I can shoot at up to 120fps, at 1/16000, f/1.8, ISO 250. No missed pictures, all in focus. The flash automatically adjust the exposure to where you focus the camera while tracking a fast moving object.

All I have to say is I hope Sony sponsors you someday! I do have a friend who shoots with a Sony flash so I am aware of the possibilities and I was impressed. Thanks for watching and your comment I’m glad that you found something that works well for you!
