Great info, I'm a newbie and have no clue what I'm doing , I just follow what the package says. Just learned from watching RU-vid videos.

Great informative information about swatches and hook size. Thank you. I am going to try using macrame rope 6mm with 8mm crochet hook. My first rug is going to be patterned to information for crochet circles and hexagons from 8 week crochet classes at a local adult learning centre for all ages and abilities where they have creative and well being courses, languages, catering and decorating, it skills and more. Brilliant.

Hey. Thanks for your videos. Not all yarns have a hook size mentioned on the ball. At least not in Germany. Many only have recommendations for knitting needles. In my experience you always need at least one size bigger for crochet than you would use for knitting.

I always cheat on the swatch and generally just do 3 rows. From that, I can almost always tell if I need to change hook sizes or not. It does save time, but if someone tends to start crocheting more loosely as they progress in the pattern, then it may definitely be a good idea to do a full swatch. Lucky for me, my stitches stay pretty consistent from start to finish.

good info. the only thing that would have made this better for beginners is showing the same yarn worked with different size hooks and the difference in the swatches

I’ve had interest in crocheting for a long time but didn’t start yet since I was always busy. I also had hooks laying around but since being home from covid I decided to take up on it again I hope to make something out of it 😊.

You should add more visual examples of what you are describing when speaking about drape, dense vs airy.

Thank you so much for addressing this topic!💜✨ I usually just go in on trial and error basis but do find it hard sometimes. Will keep these tips in mind. I've never tried making a swatch before. Maybe I should. Also, just curious...how do you handle the frustration when a project doesn't turn out they way you intended it to? 😅 I've been "going rogue" for a bit and sometimes they just haven't been turning it they way is envisioned them to. So, it gets hard to get back to that project.

Thank you so much for your help, so am I to understand that because yarn thicknesses vary, it will drape differently let's say if I use a cotton worsted weight vs. a chunkier wool 🐑 weight in a 7mm hook ? Just to play along as an example? Forgive me im just learning and I was curious. Like you say if you get used to a yarn it helps to know the qualities a yarn has including it's thickness I guess. Xo

Started the Rosewood Cardigan from All About Ami. She calls for size 3 yarn and 4mm hook. Well, I am using Spinesse yarn from Hobby Lobby and it seems very fine compared to other size 3 yarn and in addition it is slippery. I think the hook size is too large because it is hard to grab the yarn with that size hook and my hand is cramping. I think I am gonna start over and use a smaller size hook, adjust the number of stitches if I need to. It's all single crochet in front loop. Unfortunately she doesn't give the measurements of the pieces. Guess will be figuring it out. Ordered some of those tension rings and made a crochet one to get me by until they come. So yeah, using a hook too big on small yarn seems like a bad idea for hand cramping. Fingers crossed that I am successful

Hi and thanks for the video 😊 I do have a question....I get the concept of what you are trying to convey however, how does that translate over to meeting gauge for a pattern you're trying to follow? I may have discovered that I like the drape better using a 6 mm hook but then it creates a fabric way too big for the pattern gauge. ???? Thanks again for your video.

Lots of good information...especially for beginners... It’s good to know that after a while Experience will make the process of choosing the right hook...or knitting needle size will become pretty much automatic... You will know what you want to achieve...and how to get there. It’s funny. I used the same Susan abates hook for years, it was my mom’s, and for some reason I used it for all of my afghans and baby blankets... It really never occurred to me to buy another hook. Sadly, I lost Mom’s hook a few years ago...I still miss it..zit was a rise colored hook... and was either an H or J...

Thank you so much and now when you are doing a single or dbc if I can explain this right so u are chaining I have seen people go back in same stich they just made stich then I have seen then not which leaves a hole that is noticeable in your project so question is where do u actually put next stich I hope you are understanding what I'm saying or another ex is so skip 2 I have seen skip the next 2 and it leaves a hole in stich you just worked in before you skipped it then I have seen where they count the one they just worked in as a skip stich ?

Hi, If you crochet Amigurumi then most you tubers use a 3.5mm hook, but it all depends on your tension and gauge, And crochet most use a medium hook size 5mm, but really what works for others may not work for you. I hope this helps.

I am making a Coffee Cozy with Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. The Yarn calls for a 5.5 mm Crochet Hook, however, there are a lot of "holes" in the pattern. Should I go up, or down a Hook size? What do you recommend? Thank you, for these tips!
@annettea3990
@annettea3990 5 лет назад
Isn’t your coffee getting cold? I go with a hook size based on my own personal tension. Some yarn is more slippery than others. Everything is based on the tension. One you’ve mastered that, hook size will follow.

I'm a crochet artist, I design and sell dresses and full outfit wearables (pants, jackets, sweaters, bathing suits, you name it) and bags and backpacks (purses, mochillas, messenger bags, bags of holding, etc) and teach all these things from design to fundamentals actually in real life, not like online saying you're teaching then giving people incorrect at best thoughts, I wanna just dispose the myth of the swatch, making a swatch is never really nessisary, it's both more work and useless as a learning technique, basically more work for nothing, I've made all the way from $20 items all the way up to $2500 items, I'd recommend perfecting your fundamentals, literally perfect, practice a lot, to do this experiment and practice by designing things and clothes at multiple drapes and thinknessess and sizes, mutliple items, really put the hours in, and and develop an intuitive sense of how yarn with act with different sizes (and gauges, changing gauge can change size and drape just as much as changing hook size, people just don't do it cause it's "harder", but it's not if you perfect your fundamentals), practice stitches a whole bunch of different ones and sizes, to do this make and design a bunch of patterns for the same size yarn with different size hooks (and viva versa), focus on really getting one item right then expand and explore the design, this will propel you and your crocheting past making 200 swatches for 50 different projects and the projects themselves, this might sound hard but start with making something simplier items, I started designing full wearables only a month after learning to double crochet, I started my first design after only three days of crocheting a ballet design (like I said start simple, and only gotten better in the years since then, always expend what youre designing and making, dont obsess over swatches and patterns and stuff like that, or you will never (or it will take ten times longer) to be at a worthwhile and compotent designer yourself, you can do all of this in the time it's take to make those 200 swatches and just 50 projects and in the process you will get better with every one, I still am using this method to improve and still get better and learn every time I make something new, now at this level of only doing that for a few years my work is worthy of sitting with the best done and most artful works I've ever seen online, ive even done openings at painting galleries, please no one listen to this chick, she's some random chick online (clearly paid by lion brand (at least in this video) to sell products) she's not teaching, or even doing a good job to look like she is, just follow these steps and a few years of doing that and you will be able to design stuff that's worthy of being in a fine art gallery, thanks for reading
