I have watched over 20 videos and shorts on RU-vid about washing and preparation of fabric before cutting. You are only the 2nd person to mention the need to zig-zag the cut ends of your fabric before you wash it! I think this info is so important for beginners, and saves them the time and frustration of cutting strings and knots of fabric that unravel. Thank you for remembering to pass this knowledge on.
Great tips...I don't pre wah...it's choice...but I sometimes check for shrinking by wetting a pre cut square...press it dry...if it shrinks... I wash.....
Thank you for this excellent video! I learned a lot that I didn't know. You make everything so easy. Cheryl you are a great teacher especially for a beginner.
I still used to get in a muddle with cutting but since this video, it seems easier and now will do the postie paper to help. Thanks for this fantastic helpful video.
I feel so confident in sewing now. My first quilt I just winged it. Now I know exactly how to keep my squares even shapes. No one mentioned not to cut more that 2 strips. Just " you can stack fabric and cut to save time". Well, now I know why some are smaller than others. LOL I subscribed and now I am going to watch your video on pot holders. Wish me luck!!
Hello Sherry , some of your video , i could asking or place a comment. EX: the table runner video is so good, your are top teacher here. one of the best here. I just had a problem to screen shot instructions to printer. I did head write some , some i couldn't see well ever w/ glass. I'm working on the runner. Made the hearts :) pattern. With the size , i did not find to purchase, anyways will be nice if you , maybe be able to post a link w/ the instructions ? If can't it is all good . You are great teacher. Thank you Sherry
I like the way you speak English, clearly and slowly so that we can understand and we, who are not our mother language. Please remember that we don't know well English idioms,so it is advisable to avoid them. Thank you for the tutorial
I sure do enjoy your tutorials and Sherrill , I like the way you explain everything and I like your white cutting mat. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Hello Nat. I am glad you enjoy the videos, and I also love my large cutting mat. It gets a lot of use. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Mine was great. My husband is a great cook.
A question...after zig-zag, prewashing & drying fabric for a project, you said to match up selvage edges and smooth out to fold line. I just purchased a lot of fabric, did all that you said, but some of the fabric didn't form a decent fold, some fold lines were a bit "wonky". Would the ironing process fix this problem? Should I start ironing @ selvage edge and press towards fold?
Hi Nancy. Excellent question. This situation does happen at times. When this happens I recommend you adjust the fabric so that the fold line is smooth. This means that the selvage edges may not be perfectly lined up. I fined that this happens on some of the inexpensive fabrics. I hope that this helps. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing.
Thank you for the tutorial on cutting quilt fabric. I have a problem with squaring up a fabric. How do I square one up using any size ruler that is applicable without using the mat. Thanks again.
Hi Ines. The very best way to square a piece of fabric is with a square ruler. Square rules come in many sizes. I recommend purchasing a 12 1/2" square ruler. You can use this size square ruler to square a piece of fabric that is 12 1/2" or smaller. I hope this helps. Happy sewing.
Mam Thankyou for your tutorial.I like your english. I am the beginner of sewing. Which size square ruler I bought. Pl. tell me. and which mm rotary cutter its best for me. I make quilting, pot holder etc. thank you.
Hi Shelley. Before washing your new fabric using a zig-zag stitch to bind the edges prevents the fabric from unraveling during the wash cycle. A medium to large size stitch will work. Thanks for watching the video. Happy sewing.
