Taking your sketching kit on holiday is relatively straight forward, but what if you are hiking long distance where every gram counts? What if you are out walking for a day and only have limited space? Do you have to leave your sketch book at home and rely on photos? Of course not! I have just completed my first multi day hike - 95 miles / 142 kms along The Ridgeway, which is an ancient chalk path across the west and south of England. Not only did I learn about the pain of blisters, but I learnt a lot about sketching while hiking.
In this film, I'll share what materials I took (and what I should have left at home), tips for capturing your walk, and do my best to encourage you to pack a sketch kit, along with your thick socks and water bottle.
If you want to read more about our adventures, my sister kept a brilliant blog and you can find it here:
I took:
Homemade concertina sketchbook
Bulldog clip
Elastic bands
Dual tip watercolour pens in greys
Fineliners (Microns) (too many)
Waterbrush (I had two, one was enough)
Viviva Colorsheets
Kitchen towel - one piece
Water spray (not needed)
White paint marker (shouldn't have bothered)
All in a plastic bag to keep them dry......
These are the other films I mention. The Viviva Colorsheet review will not be available until 2 July 2023:
