I'm a video editor myself and I think what you shared in this vid was spot on! Making the instructions as clear as possible for the editor is super important 🙏 also, if you keep the same editor for a while then your videos will gain consistency in how they look and your editor will really get a feel for your personal style ☺️ love it!
Cannot be more on point! I’m in the process of hiring someone. What I could add to this is: 1/ create a check list to be added to your video brief so that your editor have more instructions on your requirements and to reduce revisions 2/ manage risk! what if your editor cannot edit your videos editors anymore? you need to keep consistency on your editing in the event it happens and have a back up. 3/ grab templates from your editor (such as reusable end screens or intro) - this helps you manage risk in 2/ 4/ ask your editor to show tou their work + ask to test them on a first video at a reduced rate (if possible) 5/ learn how to let it go !!! it’s hard for me to let it go as I’m used to edit and do exactly what I want on my videos.. 6/ I’m stressing Vanessa’s point on monitoring the back and forth. You can expect a lot at the beginning, but it will be reduced and under control over time Thank you so much Vanessa!!!
+Vanessa Lau of course!! Love your videos! I hope to get as much momentum as you one day. Quick question: what about the uploading, end screens, tagging, cards.. do you do them yourself?
Vanessa Lau ah ah thanks! Eh! I’m a time management and productivity expert! I may do a similar video on how save time and streamline the process. I would love to do a collab with you 😁 I think I can bring interesting insights to your audience. I’m all about bringing genuine value 😁
Vanessa new equipment is amazing! You look stunning and the whole quality is much better! You had a great production before, but now you took it to the new level!!🎈
Vanessa you are too good .. love your advice and tips they are soo helpful thanks a lot .. you actually have inspired me to open my own channel Thankyou 💕👍
I'm worried about hiring a video editor because I feel like the time it would take for me to convey my vision to them is the same amount of time it would take to just do it myself.
Wow!! You are absolutely an extraordinary communicator, your talking is on point and can easily be understood. You took away all the confusion and dived right into the juiciest parts.. I'm feeling so inspired right now.. the more I watch your videos the more I wanna get out there start producing my own contents!! Can't thank YOU enough!!
Another spot on video!! This has been something I’ve been thinking about for a while now. I’ve never been a strong editor even at university and knowing that it’s ok and can actually elevate the videos inspires me to re-evaluate my budget so I can focus on just creating the videos I really want to and not stress about trying to edit with such a crazy schedule. Will be looking for the next video as well. I’ve noticed the difference and think it’s super important to trial and make sure you vibe well so that your message gets across but you also see that other creatives flare too 🥰🤟🏽
I'm a freelance video editor and I agree with a lot of what you've said here! Another great place to find a video editor is to put an ad on Craigslist. A lot of video editors who are starting out check Craigslist a lot and most of them are going to charge you less than other editors because they are earlier on in their editing career. The video brief is such an important thing! One of the things I hate most is people giving me a bunch of footage with no explanation, then being upset that I didn't edit it how they wanted. If you have even the slightest idea of what your final video should look like, you need to tell your editor before they get started. It's so important! Hourly vs per project is always a good debate. I generally like to edit per project just because me and the client can both see how much I should be charging them and not wonder if I inflated my hours or if I decided to take a paid lunch or something. I think it keeps both the editor and the client more honest. Trying out an editor on one or two videos is a really good idea. Really really good! I almost always offer it to new clients because I want them to be sure they like me before we commit. And I think if you're hiring someone, you should only commit to one video and see how it goes before you commit to anything longer.
Vanessa your new setup makes you look *120%* !!! What a level-up! 🔥🔥🔥 Anyway, thanks for another video to save for the ages! Btw, your brief is mind-blowingly organized and specific! No surprise there though!
Vanessa, this video is four years old, and it is still relevant. You are one of my most trusted YT advisors! Thanks for all your helpful videos. You amaze me with your poise and intelligence. Wish I was young again. What an exciting world of possibilities for young people now.
LOVE the communication sheet! As a video editor, it can be a nightmare when someone has absolutely NO clue what they want. It only leads to endless revisions. To anyone hiring an editor, you can never give "too much" information!!
Hiring a RU-vid editor is something that every RU-vidr will need to do eventually! Good video, but haha don’t think most of us are at that point quite yet ;)
As a video editor, I’m really impressed with the Google doc method to communicate. I’ve never done that with any of my clients! This will really be a great way that will make both sides life easier lol Good job!
I agree with the compensation part. I hired my video editor for my agency initially on a salaried rate. Then, I noticed that it wasn't cost effective because I was paying the same every month but wasn't getting consistent amount of videos. So, I switched to a per video rate. This way my editor is actually motivated to finish my clients' videos and also lessen my cost. Great video Vanessa!
🙌🏼💯 OMG VANESSA! First thing I noticed was the new camera and picture quality! Love your content regardless but the new camera equipment pushes this to the NEXT level! 🤩😆
As a prefessional film editor, I have to agree with you. Not only does it save a bunch of time, but it make you so much more productive in the long run, because you can get so much done! If anyone needs an editor, I would love to help, just throwing that out there. Haha! 😁
Looking for a good and affordable editor- in the best case for long-term work. I am making cleaning motivation videos. If you can give me a good offer Please contact me via email or Instagram (you'll can find in my channel discribtion). Thanks 😊
This is really good advice. As a working professional of 20+ years, the post production market has changed radically. Pay for video editors has such a huge range. The talent range is also enormous. There is one truism that has been and will be for all time. You get what you pay for. A really good editor will be very expensive per minute of finished show. A new one fresh out of film school will be relatively cheap. Great video editors are flexible, consistent, inventive, trend following and will add loads of value to your videos up to and including stuff you hadn't imagined yourself. You can "tell" when you come across a great one. Always, always, always trial your prospective editors with something. Most will be happy to cut a cold open or something like 2 or 3 minutes of content as a demo of their capabilities and for you to get a flavor for their style. From experience, it strokes a sense of pride when you can demo out a couple minutes and blow away a prospective client. It's rewarding to do. Give them examples of other videos as a point of reference. Can they tell an engaging story and elucidate emotion within that time? Do they follow the script you gave them? Great start. Depends on what kind of videos you're producing. Have a contract ready to go that is open ended. You want to write (or adapt) the contract, not take one an editor hands you. Negotiate it out. It's part of the process and coming to a mutually beneficial agreement should be a breeze. Any editor worth their salt will not work without one. A decent "break-in" period would be something like 3 months, however many videos that shakes out to be. Don't commit to a time period in the contract if you don't have to. At-will is the best option if your state allows it. That way both parties don't feel trapped. Additionally, no good editor will sign a non-compete generally so toss that idea out. NDAs, however, are a good thing. You, the producer, are the copyright holder after all. Lastly, always pay your editors on time. We actually do like to buy food and pay the rent on time. They can and will jump ship on you if you give them any sense of insecurity. Video editing is intrinsically a very insecure job and anything that adds to that stress is a huge red flag. Remember, they're always hunting for better work.
As always, a wonderful video, Vanessa! As a video editor and youtuber myself, I really agree with all of your points. 😊 It's so important to find the right editor for you and I'm so happy that you found the best fit for you! 👍
I just film my videos in one go so editing takes only a few minutes. Maybe I should hire an editor, I just leave the mistakes in the videos and people don't seem to mind
@@MaitenaCarrizo I'm a monetized channel with very little editing needed for each video. I am seeking an editor and if you're interested you may contact me on discord to see if we'd be a good match. This is my tag: Eric Green#3051 A little more info: I upload day trading content and when I uploaded I was growing very quickly, but I've recently stopped uploading because in addition to my trading I'm also a uni student which makes it difficult to fit RU-vid into my schedule. Because I have no experience in editing, creating a video takes me 3 hours, but for a good editor I think it'd take 2 hours maximum. I'd be open to discussing different payment methods, but what I'm offering is 50% of the revenue the video you edit produces. Because I'm a finance channel I have a very good CPM. Hope to hear from you!
You are growing so fast Vanessa! Well done! 👍🏻 I hope that you don’t mind if I write that Very much beginner youtuber is looking for an editor for multiple videos, no big budget, doesn’t monetize yet, but if will we can negotiate.
Hi Marianna, I’m a RU-vidr and video editor looking for a few projects to work on. How many videos do you produce every month? And where can I contact you to offer my services?
A couple of additions about hourly vs per video price. **fixed-price pros**: - clear control over the budget, easy to plan expenses, no way that freelancer would spend more money uncontrollable **fixed-price cons**: - eventually, a worker will be trying to save time on every possible occasion - in case of extra requirements, it would bring extra negotiations or freelancer will eventually leave if you constantly push him/her to do more for the same money P.S. I also Elena and a Video editor myself :D I'm building up my portfolio currently and looking for channels with at least 1k subscribers. Could do a couple of videos free of charge as well.
Thanks for this! 🙌🏼 Question for you.. How do you know what details you want in when you fill out your brief when you’re not editing your video? Do you create the video project file to review your footage and take a quick pass at editing to get ideas for what you want? Or do you envision what you want on screen when you’re outlining your video script before filming? I ask because a lot of the details that I include I don’t know until I’m in the middle of editing. Thanks Vanessa! 💕
Couldn't agree more Vanessa! I know this might sound bias because we're a video editing company haha but our clients were able to amplify their video production because of this.
Hey Vanessa! Love your videos. But your desk is so pretty, I prefer to see it unblurry! I clicked on the video and was so confused for a second before I realized what had changed
I have been contemplating getting a video editor when the time is right. Doing it all myself, its so hard to stay on schedule. Thank you so much for this information!
I have a question. When do you think is the right time to make a website and how can you make such a good website, did you also hire someone to run your website? Thanks
I usually really enjoy your videos and this is no different. As a video editor it is really use to hear some of the practical tips you have for people looking for editors as it helps us as much as it helps you
Wow! So much value! Thank you! This is just what I wanted to know. As you mentioned, not many people talk about this. You really know how to find gaps in the niche and deliver what people want!
This is the video I needed RIGHT NOW!! I enjoy editing videos, and I thought I had a schedule/flow locked down for staying consistent on RU-vid while having a full-time job... until I went public with my side business last week. This past weekend was the first time after over a month of doing 1 video a week I wasn't able to get an upload in. :( Made me realize it may be my time to hire. Thank you for this!!
I agree! As a Video Editor it takes a lot of time when it comes to editing especially when you have other important things to get done like side hustling in general. But I'm here to help tho! if you've decided to hire a Video Editor, I'm happy to discuss about my services 😊
When you talked about clear communication between the client and editor, you're speaking facts. As an autistic clear comminucation is paramount in order for me to understand. If you're clear from the get-go. That saves both of us time. I am a video editor but I thought this video would be helpful to know what a potentail client is looking for
*I'll definitely be using this in the future. I'm a nurse and also a content creator and I know that soon I will be needing this video editor. Thanks so much for making informative contents ALWAYS ❣️*
Vanessa, you inspired me to grab the opportunity and go for it myself. Hard to pin down professionals to help and time my work around their schedule. Got a Sony alpha, some lights and a mic and am filming. Thanks for the guidance. B
This is a fantastic video. I'm at the stage where I'm considering outsourcing the editing of my long-form content so that I can focus more of my time on ideation and scripting...
#feedback (please read 😊) 1)Vocal sound is lot clear , like you're sitting infront of me 😁 even with 144p 2) Blur and focus is totally superb , even with 144p 3) no one complain for audio , and focus now 🎉 Now coming to video , i never thought that much goes in creating a video 😅 i think i'll start learning video editing to atleast start , and yeah if i hire , i'll also do by video not hour , How to start learning video editing , i don't know really where i can learn that 😅 (i use windows not mac ) You really don't know what impact you create on us 😍 #VanessaRU-vidStar #ThankyouVanessa #VanessaTheExpert
So funny but I have literally been considering this lately. I need help! 😂 You are so right Vanessa, bc it can be so overwhelming sometimes think I should have gone to film school instead. So I would know what I am doing and keep up with all the dope video cuts the kids do nowadays! 💕xo
Heya, this was very well explained and helpful for me. As an editor coming from TV and considering doing youtube editing as a side job, this helps as a starting point in terms of workflow etc!
Vanessa what do you think of adding hashtags in the title of a RU-vid video? Will that help the video more in terms of reach? According to TubeBuddy, that's one of the best practices to use, e.g., "Add tags to your title." At least that's what I understood from that phrase. Love your videos! Just keeps getting better and better!
Hello, Vanessa, I have learned so much from your videos every single time. I started using Asana and I love it. This tool helped me organize my content ideas and video scheduling. I couldn't say Thank you enough. I really like the idea of hiring a video editor, however, I kind of enjoy editing my own video. I need to learn how to use FCP well, because I am still using iMovie and I think my video can be improve by using an advance software. Thank you so much for all the suggestions! Have a great weekend ahead.
Thank you for this video it was really interesting! Would it be too off-topic to ask a video from the perspective of a video editor? I mean it can be even on the business side of the job, like what is ok to ask to your clients, when is ok not to accept an offer, or some red flags as a freelance (in general). Anyway, than you for this and for every video you make! I love the new equipment, the improvement did not go unnoticed! 😂
