When a patient receives a shock from their device, there are many things to consider. It is important to obtain a history, physical and, in some cases, a chest x-ray to determine if the shock was due to an abnormal rhythm or if it could be related to device malfunction. Things such as electromagnetic interference or a break in a cable can lead to device malfunction, so determining the reason for the shock is vital.
