I found Russian very useful for deaf Americans who use American sign language because word orders in Russian is very flexible, except a lot of changes of case forms. Both of the American sign language and Russian match together most of the time. Я себя глухой человек, который любит русский язык учиться. 😉

I didn't have my first contact with a native speaker until about 1.5 years into learning. She was extremely nice and I was very nervous, but thankfully she said that I spoke very clear, so I was happy. Now, I'm not afraid to talk to anyone, but I don't always understand everything.

My ongoing listening to Daria's slow Russian lessons is the key for me to develop that confidence and then progressing on to the fast Russian lessons.... also, writing down the words and sentences for practice sake also helps me to nail it down.

G'day Daria from your number 1 fan down under )))) I've just watched this video and thanks, it was very timely. As you know (как Ты знаешь) I have been "trying" to learn Russian for 280 or so days now. SO I am past the 1 month/2 month stuff, and I have now and then dipped my toes in the water in trying to speak with (on skype) and type with (in chat rooms) some Russian people. Well, just the other day while trying to type some Russian, I was asked to type in english because my Russian was that bad )))) So looking at this was encouraging. I am very aware that I am a slow learner but it is still a bit frustrating that even after 8 or 9 months, I am still "dumb" regarding being able to converse in Russian. Yes, I've tried, but every time I try, all of my "limited word bank" seems to run away and hide.))) But I will keep trying. When I joined Real Russian Club, I gave you that promise )))

Excellent advice! So many people are pushing students learning Russian to "speak from the start," or "just speak..." that I have wondered (and I'm skeptical) whether or not that's a good approach. I think your advice is good because it reminds us to take it easy on ourselves and not to put too much pressure on ourselves. After all, the experience should be an enjoyable one, right? I don't want to discourage those who want to start speaking right away... they should do what they feel is best; rather, I just want to echo your comments in this video that what is most important is to be comfortable and to relax and enjoy the process! And thanks for the reassurance!
@RealRussianClub
@RealRussianClub 7 лет назад
it also depends on why someone is learning the language. If they want to travel to Russia and to communicate with Russians, and after that forget the language forever - it's okay to start speaking from the beginning. But if the goal is to become fluent, it's a different story:)

I've already accepted the fact that I will probably never be 100% fluent in Russian, it's just too dissimilar to my native language to pick up without years of immersion. That's not my goal. My goal is to challenge myself and throw myself into the deep end of the language-learning pool and have some fun doing so, and hope my skills will come in handy for the future.

hi could you please tell me how to keep the words in memory because once I learned later I could not able to remember and recall it when it's required in phrase
@RealRussianClub
@RealRussianClub 7 лет назад
the only way to remember words and phrases is to learn them DEEPLY, and to learn them deeply means to use them actively for some period of time. How I usually organize my offline classes: we write down all the new phrases, then we create short stories or poems with them, ask each other questions with those phrases. Also I give a homework - to use them actively at least for 1 week, every day. And then you just add some new words and phrases, etc. realrussianclub.com/ebook/ - check out my free ebook about how to learn vocabulary deeply

Hi, I thought of an idea. How about if people send you audio files of them speaking Russian. Maybe you could make them a topic of a youtube video (if they agree ) or even give people individual feedback (? for a charge) Maybe you could give out a prepared text for people to read that would allow people to pronounce common words. The technology is not too diffucult and this would be something more unique that I don't see other online Russian teachers doing. I think in building confidence in speaking level one goal is to be understandable. Higher levels are to have better pronounciation or make less grammar mistakes. The highest level is to become a spy and speak so that even Putin won't know you are not Russian. (Ha ha )
@RealRussianClub
@RealRussianClub 7 лет назад
hi Chad, thank you for your suggestion. I thought about making a video about pronunciation using real audios from my students. But I'm not sure how to organize it technically
