If I were to decide to go the Altec route, what would you recommend as a starter speaker? I’d like to buy something that I can play now and then upgrade later. I see the choices as: Stonehenge or Model 17 (9 ft3): 604E or 604-8G 15” full-range speaker Model 19: 416-8B 15” Bass driver, 811B sectional horn, 802-8G compression driver Valencia 846B (8 ohm; 846A is 16 ohm): 416-8B 15” Bass driver, 811B sectional horn, 806-8A compression driver
All of them will give you the ultra high efficiency experience, just different flavor. The Valencia and the #19 can be adapted to a VOL (like my speakers), if you are thinking about a major rebuild in the future.... have fun! ; Janos
what kind of gothic stockings did you use? mosquito net? do you have any experience with cleaning voice coils e.g. remove dust etc.? for example with compressed air
Nelli picked them out from the fabric store - but yes, they are the lightest net material we found. Actually, tried out 3 different kinds, and chose the one that interfered the sound the least. :) I have not tried cleaning voice coils as a separate measure, but compressed air might be a good try - unless there are big particles stuck in , as in that case the air might force the particulates in deeper. I'd suggest to clean the voice coil during a driver rebuild, when everything is taken apart, cleaned, and fresh surround installed.
