In this video I discuss some tips I find useful when photographing parades. Website: focalpointartp... First published book: amzn.to/3Y3P6f2 Second published book: amzn.to/3Y07Mw7 Gear list: www.focalpoint...
Parades are fun and a challenge. As you pointed out, the easy images, are hardly inspiring to our creative side. But that is what the client wants, usually the Chamber of Commerce, the publication I am shooting for, etc... Back in the day (1980s) I would have three rigs, two primarily for work and the other for me (with my own film, usually slides), where I could try different techniques, e.g. Flash/Blur (shutter dragging), detail shots, pre-parade, behind the scene images and so on. I loved (and at times hated) nighttime parades usually Christmas events as they were the most technically challenging, especially shooting with slide film. Great insights as always...👍
Yes, when the client gets in the way lol! They pay the bills so you've got to make them happy...I can imagine using film at night made for a real challenge. I enjoy parades for the most part but the nighttime ones can be tricky, though I feel like those can maybe lead to the more interesting images.
