What sealer would you use if you are staining the board and not painting it?
@StudioR12Stencils
@StudioR12Stencils 2 года назад
We have an answer straight from the #bosslady! ⭐️ With stain you don't seal first - a lot of times the stain has sealant in it. You can varnish at the end with this. ⭐️ If you are going to be painting a light color over the stain and want to treat the knots, you will stain first, then use the knot sealer over the entire surface. We recommend testing with the knot sealer with a stain before trying it on the whole surface. - A lot of times, we won't use the knot sealer when we stain, because we are going for more of a rustic look and don't mind if the knots show.

Can I use the spray bullseye shellac? Also do I fill knots first or shellac? I couldn’t find the brush on shellac.

I wasn’t able to find the brush on at Home Depot so I got the spray on. It seemed like it covered it really well. We’ll wait and see I guess

Am I correct that, you used the same roller to paint that you sealed with?

Thank you for your question, Amy! Yes, Patty used the same roller. In this case, it worked just fine since she used black/dark paint for this project.✨

what type of paint can I use? Can I use regular paint that is used on the walls?
@StudioR12Stencils
@StudioR12Stencils Год назад
Hi Lucia! You can use regular paint - especially for background colors. You may also use something like DecoArt acrylic paints for the stenciling because they are 100% pigment. It's totally the painter's choice. We have a very helpful video that explains what paints we use and where to find them that can be found here: bit.ly/3Qr7Z6O

What store Carrie’s that brand shellac? Also can I use any brand?
@StudioR12Stencils
@StudioR12Stencils Год назад
Thanks for asking Julie. Most hardware stores carry shellac. We also have an Amazon affiliate link here: Bulls Eye: amzn.to/3nDL2yD We use this brand because it is water-based and works perfectly with craft paints.

Thank you for watching! This one is a 4' board. We use either 4' or 6' boards for our tall porch signs - we are working on a few 5' designs as well.

I've got a pine board similar to what you've got that I want to use to build a computer desk, what steps do you think I'd need to take to prep and paint it? The planned color is white. Would I just copy/paste the steps you took in this video?
@StudioR12Stencils

Thanks for asking! Yes, these steps will work when you are using unfinished pine. Good luck with your project!!!

Hey there! We just happened to have a roller with black paint on it and we were basecoating this project with black. So instead of dirtying a second roller with the sealer, we just used the dirty roller we already had to put the sealer on, then when it dried, we basecoated with the black overtop of it. We did use the same roller for the sealing and basecoating. If you have any other questions, please let us know!

What kind of wood you.use and what size
@StudioR12Stencils
@StudioR12Stencils 8 месяцев назад
For our porch signs we use 1" x 12" lumber from the hardware store. We offer designs in 4 foot, 5 foot or 6 foot. So the length will be determined by the size of the design we choose.

Can I use Modge Podge as a sealant instead of the Deco Art product seen in this video?
@StudioR12Stencils
@StudioR12Stencils Год назад
We have not used modge podge as a varnish. We recommend using a polyurethane varnish for any project that is going to be used outdoors.
@kathyanderson7214
@kathyanderson7214 Год назад
@@StudioR12Stencils I meant as that first layer, before the paint goes on. In the video Patty uses a Deco Arts all purpose sealer before putting any paint on so I was wondering if Modge Podge would serve the same purpose? I always use polyurethane AFTER the paint is applied as a final sealant/varnish coat.

@@kathyanderson7214 We checked with Patty on this. She said she has not used modge podge as a sealer, so she is not sure how this would work. Please let us know if you try this and how it works.

For this project, we used a 4 foot board. We will typically use a 4 foot or 6 foot board for our porch signs. We get 1 x 12 from the hardware store and have them cut it 4 to 6 feet depending on the design.
