Tips for Purchasing a Used Smocking Pleater Machine

If you want to delve into the wonderful world of smocking, hand pleating and purchased inserts will only take you so far - you need a pleater, and new pleaters are expensive! But used pleaters are plentiful and available. Here are things to keep in mind and my recommended brands when purchasing a used pleater.

Good information. I pulled out my Amanda Jane pleater a few days ago afire rediscovering smocking. The receipt was in the box. $125:00 receipt date 3/18/97. I am glad I didn’t get rid of it.

My husband's grandmother gifted me a little miss muffet pleater, I'm very new to this side of the sewing space if you could point me in the direction of people that know about this machine that would be so helpful.

You can still buy genuine Sally Stanley needles as well.

Thank you for such a wonderful comprehensive tutorial about pleaters. I have a Martha Pullen pleater with 2 full sets (I think they are full sets) of extra needles that the original owner purchased but never used. I don't think she ever used the pleater either- but how do you get the knob off so that it fits into the box??

The Tosca company sells needles that they say fit the Pullen Pleater.

Hi, could this handle fabric with lining sewn together for pleating?

You can pleat 2 fabrics together. The fabrics need to be basted together first. It does depend on how thick the fabrics are.

Hi there, greetings from bavaria. I´m going buy a pleater for my "Trachtenverein". We want to pleat our skirts by machine because hand-pleating is so time consuming. Our skirts have about 4m heavy woven fabric, do you have any recommandation for a pleater with a big diameter at the holes? And second question. Do you know if its possible to insert heavy yarn into the neadles? By handpleating we usually use crochet yarn or comparable yarn, because we need to "shrink" the 4m into 80cm waist with. Hi Maria in Bavaria! It isn't possible to put crochet thread through the needles. Only regular thread will fit. We use hand quilting thread here in the US which is a little stronger than all purpose sewing thread. You can put heavier fabric through the pleater such as lightweight wool coating and corduroy but you do take a chance on breaking the needles. I would look for an Amanda Jane pleater if you can find one. They have a pin that holds the bar in place so it can't pop out if pleating heavier fabric. It and the Sally Stanley have the same size holes on the side. I hope that helps and good luck finding one.

¿Me podría decir cuál es la distancia entre cada punto tanto de altura como de separación que tiene esa máquina? Para hacer el plisado manual ya que aquí en Costa Rica son muy caras esas máquinas

Do any of the pleaters needles come in a size that I can get an elastic thread through?

Each pleater only has one type of needle that works with it. There aren’t different size needles for the same pleater. The eye of the needle is generally the same size for all brands. You can get quilting thread and fine fishing line through the eye but I don’t know if you can get elastic thread through. If you can’t get it the the pleater needles that you have, then you aren’t going to be able to get elastic thread through the needles. I hope that helps.
