That was fantastic! I’m pregnant with my first baby and we’re Brazilian. My husband and I were talking about raise her as a bilingual child. So he’ll be talking only in Portuguese and I’ll be talking in English. This is called OPOL, I guess. So my point is, besides studying a lot about it, we need to be consistent and also creative to do some activities with her. And to learn baby vocabulary because I’ve been studying English since 2005 and I’ve never saw those kind of things in my entire life. I hope that I can do my best for her 🤰🏻💖

This video really encourages me! My girl is 2.5 yo. We're Italian. We live in Italy and nobody around us speaks English which is my favourite language and one of the most spoken around the world of course. I'm not that good at speaking but I understand well. In almost 5 months I was able to teach her colors, animals, random words and she can count to 10 in English (that's funny because she's not able to count to 10 in her native language.. she always skips numbers 3 and 7 😆). My dream would be to move to a native English speaking country for few months and see if it helps.. she's really shy and introvert when she's around strangers so I need to fully understand if it would be the right choice in order to maximize the exposure to the language considering the investment as well (if it does make sense). Thank you for your precious tips.

Full integration is by far the easiest way for not only little kids but also adults to learn new languages. I learned English once I started school and at that point I really didn’t have a choice whether or not I was gonna learn it and I ended up picking it up pretty quickly. That’s so awesome that you have been able to teach her so much in such a short amount of time. I’m sure that as time goes on she will learn so much more. Just know that you’re doing an awesome job!

Hello there! Random question. If a person was going to move to Italy for a few years (my husband could transfer to an American base in Italy) firstly do italians generally like Americans? (Though it seems like most of the world does not lol) and secondly, would you suggest learning some Italian since you've said there's not a lot of English speakers around you?

I’ll be adding a Spanish only playlist on Spotify & have my kids listen to songs & read along with the lyrics. Also, when I ask them a question in Spanish, I’ll have them respond in a full Spanish sentence. Me: Tienes frio? Child: Si tengo frio. Me: Ve a ponerte una chaqueta? Child: Voy por mi chaqueta.

Hey, I’m speaking to my daughter (3 yrs) only in Spanish as well, but she is starting to respond to me only in English. She understands Spanish but feels more comfortable speaking in English. Do you have advice for me? Do your kids respond to you in English? I feel like I’m alway saying “dímelo en español”.

Pretend you don’t understand her English and make her only speak to u in Spanish. English is for school but everything else is Spanish only. That’s the only way you can immerse her in the language before she becomes a no sabo kid. I responded in English my whole childhood and now I can’t speak but I can understand lol for me it was a confidence thing. I didn’t want to mispronounce anything and in Spanish I have a stutter 🤣 now I’m teaching my kids and working on speaking it myself.

Hi Jen. I'm a Vietnamese living in Vietnam. I'm trying to raise my bilingual kid. Although we're Vietnamese and surrounded by Vietnamese people. I've tried to make her expose to English. She now speaks English completely. When can I start to teach her Vietnamese? Cause I want to homeschool her until she's old enough for primary school. *Now she always gets annoyed when someone speak Vietnamese*

Hi. Are you also teaching Nahuatl? We are a bilingual family. I speak English to my son and my husband in Spanish. I know that we should teach Spanish to my son. I’m not Spaniard. I’m indigenous and 3rd generation that speaks Spanish. I’m just afraid of the time spent learning Nahuatl where just him and me will speak it. I figured you know some? You said thank you at the end. Would be a nice feedback from someone like you. Thanks

Yes so I am currently learning and so me and the kids get to learn together which is a wonderful experience. I wish with all of my heart that I would be fluent so that this process would be a lot easier but colonization does do a number. But I love applying the little bit that I do know and playing different games with him. Like our colors and different things in nature like the river and the trees and things like that and so I try my hardest to share as much as I’m learning with them. I think that it’s super important for them to know even if it’s just a little bit.

Great video thank you so much for sharing, my son is 6 years old and he had speech delay therefore we decided to speak only in English to him since he was 2 years old. Forgot to mention Spanish is our first language somehow I’m used to speak in English to all the kids because I’m also a learner and it has helped me a lot. He is not at the same level of his peers in speaking terms (English) I’m not sure if is the right time to start introducing him to Spanish.

What about going to a bilingual school? My son is in kinder and he knows his vowels in Spanish only, I don’t want it to affect him in the future.. so you have any tips on that?

We live in a Spanish speaking country should I teach him Spanish first before entering preschool? Then later introduce English?

Hi there! Need an advice before my daughter starts school. My husband and i speak both english and spanish but speak spanish to our daughter all day. She will soon enter prek and im in a dilemma if i should enroll her in a bilingual classroom or English classroom. I know if I place her in bilingual classroom it will be spanish all day. My stronger language is spanish and feel i would like to place her in a english classroom so she could be fluenty in English and then spanish at home. My question should I place her in dual language and speak to her in English at home or place her in English classroom and us parents speak fluently spanish at home?
@JenRiveraBell

If you are in an English dominated country then I’d place her in Spanish and if you’re in a Spanish dominated country I’d place her in English. It’s so important for them to get as much language exposure to whatever language they’d get lest in society. ✨

Your video was so helper to me. I think to make friends with someone who speaks the language that you are trying to teach is really important. My husband is Korean and me as well. But i can speak english and i studied abroad when i was young. So I don’t want my baby to struggle learning second language that i did. So i only seak English to my baby and she is now 18months. My concern is that.. she sometimes talking strange, put different words together and say as a sentence. But not to make any sense and not to say clear words.. i know she is still young, she could say few words in English and Korean clearly. But is it normal process she could have? Or it’s kind of language delay?

I have heard that some kids raised in bilingual households won’t even begin to speak until almost 2 years of age, because their brain is trying to learn everything before speaking. So I’m sure your daughter is ok! You’re doing a great job, and she will appreciate it someday!
