Since we had some rain at last Sundays class, what better time to give some tips for wet weather riding?

You know Jerry, Donna wouldn't need that hip replacement if she didn't have to keep running and standing cones back up when these guys run them over. 😁 In all seriousness I hope all goes well with her surgery and that she heals quickly.

I remember "summer ice" in the Tampa Bay area...intersections could be DEADLY on four tires, let alone two! Even here in sparsely-populated Wyoming with a lot less oil and grease on the road than Florida, I slow way down in the wet when riding. Prayers up for Donna's continued recovery and a Merry Christmas for you and yours.

Hope you have a quick recovery, Donna! I took a trip to CO this past summer. All most every pass I went over it was raining either going up or coming down. Pretty sketchy stuff. If it was not for what I learned at this class no way would I have made up to the top of MT Evans. This ride is very technical for a big bike on dry pavement but the closer I got to the top I rode through weather changes. Rain, snow and even some hail. I took your class on a STG back in 2017. This trip was done on my Ultra. I traded up to the PAS after returning home and am loving it. Everything I learned is the same on all of the bikes. The PAS it so much lighter and so fun ride. Thanks Jerry and Donna!!

Great vid as always Jerry. Really hope Donna heals quickly from that Hip op. Rain riding! Here in the UK, It rains a lot so the roads get washed a “Lot” but sometimes it suddenly rains and the road is just like someone has poured Fairy Liquid on it.You get a froth on the road. It is horrible. People say it’s best not to ride in the rain. Great if you live in California. But in the UK if we waited to ride on dry days,we would wait a long time.

When I bought my first motorcycle, the first 400 miles were all in the rain. My tip for riding in the rain is, if a wheel slides in a curve: Do nothing. Don't brake, don't stick a leg out, don't even fully close the throttle, just let the bike do what it wants and 9 out of 10 it'll be OK.

Yeah riding in the rain can be very daunting especially with greasy oil on the road and have had a few occasions with the back end sliding out on my cruiser and having to put the foot down & motorcross round the corner. Scary stuff. So riding in rain training is good 👍

Good luck to Donna! The best advice for riding in the rain is "DON'T!" Unfortunately, sometimes it's necessary. My instructor (back when I was young, and dinosaurs ruled the Earth) told us "on the wet, ride as if you have an annoyed rattlesnake sitting on your lap. No sudden moves, ride in slow motion." It's more important than in normal times to keep the head moving, ride way ahead of the bike and get the big picture. Doctrine was to get under cover immediately when rain started, park for an hour (until the oil was cleaned off), and we were encouraged to call for a trailer pickup if we were out on the highway, rather than ride back in the middle of all of the speeding, ignorant cagers.
@mhoeij
@mhoeij 2 года назад
I ride to work 5 days per week, rain or shine. It's not that bad. Just ride smart, keep distance, smooth on the controls, and keep the main focus on other traffic, don't be distracted by traction worries.
@edwinball985
@edwinball985 2 года назад
@@mhoeij Agreed. Biggest problem usually in the rain after the oil washes off is keeping warm. You need water resistant gear including gloves and boots or your soaked quick. And when your soaked clear to the skin, you can start getting hypothermia in surprisingly warm temperatures.

Hey Jerry, I'd love to see a video dedicated to wet grip - to prove your point about having 90% of the grip that you have in the dry. Maybe perform a turn somewhere in the dry and then come back and do the same thing again in the same place when it's wet, and see how fast you can go before you start to lose grip. It would be interesting to see you try it 20mph slower / 15mph slower etc, and to see whether the bike gives you much warning or whether it just flips out. I reckon fear of sliding in the wet is one of the biggest things for riders - it is for me, anyway - and it would be really useful to see you go at it scientifically.

Prays 🙏 for Donna ! I was riding in the rain on a 4 lane road 2 in each direction and must of hit a puddle and hydroplaned across the highway with no control I just let it ride itself out and got back over but if there was on coming traffic I would have been killed . I never leave in the rain but always come home to it. Ride safe !

Fairly new rider here, I just got my permit and started riding this year because of the cost of gas. I am a fairly small girl (5"3' and 130lbs) on a 250 LTD I think 1985 or 1988. I just recently started getting more confidence with just under 50 hours of riding. Well, I took a pretty big fall and was wondering what you could help me learn from it. ~ Rain had just stopped, I was pulling up to the parking lot and was going slower than I would if it was dry (down in 3rd), there is a double yellow line that I have to cross (Turning left into the lot, USA roads), I went to turn like always and before I knew it I was on the ground. My front end is what slipped out. The bike landed on me. Bike is still running and I rode it home. I really want to get better and any advice is super appreciated. Thank you for your time and I hope Donna's hip recovery is going smoothly.

Just laid her down yesterday inside a parking structure in front of an audience. I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager (1700cc Model) 900 lbs in curb Weight which I believe qualifies as a heavyweight motorcycle. And yes, I have practiced in slow tight turns and slow speed maneuvers but I’ll confess I have not done so in the rain. What got me was a stupid Painted Arrow on parking structure floor. I had to have been going only 10-12 mph and I was barely giving it a lean but boy that was enough to lose my tire’s traction and I literally spun in a split second with the nose of my motorcycle looking West immediately towards the East (Performing a 180° turn) followed by laying her on her left. Boy did I learned my lesson. Do not Lean on the traffic Painted areas of the roads!
@mhoeij
@mhoeij 2 года назад
Those can be very slippery, and what's especially deceptive is that some of them have traction (special paint) while some other ones (the old fashioned paint) are very slippery when wet. Hope you and your bike are OK. On the way to work there is a corner with a manhole right in the middle! Not good, especially when wet. This is the kind of stuff why I don't like riding at night.
@93jmac14
@93jmac14 2 года назад
@@mhoeij I appreciate your comment, and yup, this was not one of those arrows with traction and I know which ones you’re talking about. They’re the ones that kinda stick out of the ground and they look kind of rocky. This was not one of those. On top of that the parking structure’s floor was coated over it with that shiny slick material Jerry mentioned in this video. But man that arrow was extra slippery! I’d tell you; at that very split-second moment when I was spinning out in that instant 180° turn I automatically knew that it was that arrow. I’ve drove that parking structure a million times and one time it rains it was extra slippery. Yes my motorcycle is OK, it’s a quick bike crash bar is at the front and rear wheel, the only damage was a little scraping on the left muffler since it fell on his left side. And as of my foot it actually slid a little bit on my left foot however I just bought these cement block like boots. And it really protected me from any injuries. It was a little sore but now it’s gone. Thank goodness I wore my gear. Stay safe bud and merry Christmas to you!

Hey Jerry, I was riding in active rain coming back to California from Utah about 4:30am. With my face shield down, I couldn't see due to all rain drops on it, and with it up, the rain felt like needles in my eyes, so I had to put the face shield down partially and consistently wipe it down to see as I rode on. Do you have a better method for this? BTW, I got my license almost 6 years ago and the first thing I did was buy your Ride Like A Pro Video. It was most helpful. I watch a lot of your videos and practice in parking lots around. I really appreciate your expertise. Thanks for all your help.
