So get this Motorman, I broke my neck, my cervical spine twice ‘on the job’ as we say in LE. I am fused from C2 to T1 and I lost 50% of the ability to turn my head left and right, and up and down and I still ride. And…it gets better, over the last 3 years I have had six, count em, six lumbar spine surgeries and I am fused at four levels in the lumbar region, and I still ride. Got off the bike last July because of a congenital spine defect that was disclosed on a MRI and had three spine in September. Two years earlier, I sustained a lumbar spine injury in the exact same location and that required 3 lumbar spine surgeries. Yes, 6 lumbar spine surgeries in the exact same location in 3 years. Two weeks ago I finally got back on my 2012 HD Ultra Classic and I am back in the saddle riding again. Twenty five years as a Federal Agent, 3 cervical spine surgeries, 6 lumbar spine surgeries and I am riding again. Life and retirement is good Motorman!! Thank you for all of your great videos. DP Special Agent - Retired Paratrooper, 82nd Airborne Division 1973 to 1976.
I gotta tell ya, I practice all the time and still have trouble with the friction zone. I have a hydraulic clutch on my Road King and it seems like it's either on or off no friction zone. I put an aftermarket slave cylinder on which helps and gives me a little friction zone, but still very touchy.
I have that same bike and yea before I saw your channel and one other similar (paying it forward) the 900lb bike was a lot. I was confident enough gas stations and parking at places was ehhh not what I looked forward to but manageable. A u turn on a 2 lane I never would of done I would ride miles and find a lot to turn in. Now- I own that. I’m actually in control of the bike now. Friends (other riders too) have been way impressed these big bikes were even capable of being this nimble. Thanks a ton.
Interessting. I have to check this out. I've no problems to go very low speed with my electraglide but i didnt try this rear break while driving stabilisation you told here. Thank you.
Hell. I'd say this applies to any motorcycle. Nobody should ever be a duck walking doofus. Practice proper skills. Always. Duck walking doofuses are just lazy and not paying attention
This is life saving information! Not just for 900lb motorcycles but ALL motorcycles! Even if you’ve been riding “your whole life” Do yourself a favor and put that Pride away and LEARN from someone who knows more than you aka The Motorman 👍
Jerry, now I know why my Harley just sits here. I can make some of those moves on my street bike, so now I MUST PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... and get my skills upgraded to the heavy Harley. I'm glad I didn't sell it because I can learn this stuff brother. 2016 Ultra Limited- 2600 miles. Yes, I just bought the digital download today and I'm 40 minutes into viewing. And it's my first time seeing you. When I practice your spot on techniques I'll love my bike again.
I took the MSF course to get my MC Lic 18yrs ago and rode the V twin during the class, did the V8 turn perfectly in the small box. Problem is, I've mainly ridden a 79' KZ1000 ST and 2yrs ago I bought a new 21' Vaquero. So yeah, having to relearn how to ride again. I live in SE NH so I have all types of terrain & weather here.
Thank you so much, great teacher, I learned a lot from your technic special when I make circle, I was using the handle bar, but I couldn’t do it, now I do better by leaning the bike, I was afraid to do it before. But now better just I need more practice. Outstanding teaching be blessed.
Mr. Palladino: I have your 'RIDE LIKE A PRO' from 2-4 years ago.I recommend it to most riders I talk with.., new or experienced. I review it every so often to keep it embedded in my head while riding. This one is a "refresher" of your teachings and all of your videos are great. However, the title above is misleading. It sounds like 3 "Items" you should have. Maybe: "You MUST LEARN 3 things...". Thank s, for all your great lessons!
All you riders want to find out if a big bike is for you come visit me here in the desert of New Mexico. It's not hard to ride down the road. But if you want to know if you can handle a big bike, they say do not ride in sand. I ride 7 miles on sand each time I leave home or return home. It is a harry ride but it will teach you about riding a big bike. Have fun riding and ride with God. My riding buddy said I ride it like a dirt bike. I told him I don't have much choice it is going to go where it wants to go on sand and you better be able to know what is coming as it starts and be able to correct before it happens.
When I went from a 600 or so pound bike to this 900 plus pound Road Glide, I thought what the heck did I get myself into? Your videos helped immensely. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but that bike and I are getting to be good friends. Thanks Jerry
Another great demo, I have your Ride like a Pro course on USB and watch a lot, this has improved my way of riding and your RU-vid videos enhance the course, I look forward to taking a live course with you soon
Thank you sir. I live in the mountains in WNC and I love your videos. I watch all your videos and then practice on the Blue Ridge Parkway with my 05 cvo Fatboy.
I've been teaching my wife using your practice syllabusfrom your website. She's been making good progress. She's still super nervous but every time we go out she improves.
Jerry you speak with the truth! I live in Mexico, where car accidents are easy to happen, I have a 125cc which is a super lighter bike 240lb or less, but as you stated, I can muscle the bike because it's manageable, but with monsters like 900lb it's waaay out of proportion. With your techniques everyday I'm improving, to handle just with throttle, rear brake and control . Thanks for sharing
Great video Jerry 📽️ Really shows any bike peeps out there how to actually ride the big bikes. As you have said previously it's not rocket science and is just all technique riding bikes. Hopefully all the dofus bike riders out there do watch this video as it's excellent and learn how to do it and buy your videos too.
You are spot on! My advanced class taught me techniques identical to yours. They called it keeping your bike in “Torque”. Of course that included clutch, throttle and use of the rear brake!
Yes, I bought a 2007 Yamaha Royal Star tour deluxe from a guy who was fresh out of the MSF course. He wanted a big cruiser and bought that. It tips the scales at about 840 lbs. He couldn't handle it properly and was turned off by it and parked it in his garage. He held onto it for a few years riding it sparingly before he decided to sell it to me. I got a 10-year-old bike (bought in 2017) with 4k miles on it. I've since passed 60k on it using it for trips and long weekend rides. Got it dirt cheap because he needed room in his garage and the wife wanted it gone like yesterday. I tried not to laugh as he told me he was going to take the money and buy a sport bike. Even worse. I see lots of riders who spend money on a big bike with a shytload of chrome and an upgraded stereo blasting yet cannot ride. They are duck walking doofus club members all day long. and they cannot make simple turns. This always made no sense to me. Why not spend money on a course like Jerry's to learn to properly handle what you just sunk a boatload of cash on?
I have been riding since 1982 but I never really knew how to do it intelligently until I picked up Jerry's DVD's about 7 years ago. Your teaching is truly a public service to all riders Jerry! Thanks for all you taught me!!
Great video! My Goldwing has linked brakes and I am nervous about using the back brake when trying this technique. Any advice, other than don't use it! Thanks.
You have helped me so much with this and many of your videos. I’ve been riding for awhile but sold my 2011 Street Glide about 3 years ago. I just bought a 2022 CVO Street Glide. It felt like a monster bike to me & way bigger than my 2011. I had really lost fundamentals of riding & I no doubt was intimidated by this big expensive 900 pound bike. I really didn’t want to ride it & thought maybe I’ve just lost that passion I use to have to ride. I started to watch your videos with this one being the most recent. The exercises back to the basics & practice has made a huge difference & I’m getting back to where I need to be in handling that bike. THANK YOU! I’m not too proud to admit that Continued learning will only make riding better & safer. Keep the videos coming & thanks again.
Man Jerry I wished this 72 yr old vet could take lessons directly from you! I can barely do figure 8's on my Dyna! Dang you make it look so easy! I do use your pushing with a finger or so on turns and it works great! Come up tp PA please?
You doin' this for 20 bucks? Wow great! You're not gettin rich with this :-) Gues that's not what it is about. Thanks for your efford and enthusisam, I'd love to join and learn, live in europe though...
I snagged my 02' Deuce 14yrs old, out of a garden shed with 3k on the clock for $5k 6yrs ago. I walked into Miracle Mile Harley on the next free barbecue day and saw a blue 03' Deuce with 18k on its clock for $11k! The stealership offered me $6500 trade in, if I bought a bike off the floor 😂😂😂
46 yrs MC on my licence. First hearing understanding past near disaster errors letting clutch out on HD FX afterbring revs up further not wanting to stall engine ,I didn't hear rear wheel spin with dealer supplied helmet on and the bike rocketed across the street in to the front fender of my parked Vega in wheelie position kept me from flying off the bike. The Vega saved me from the brick wall that I parked along side of. The guy from dealership ran out , shut off engine that was still grunting against the Vega front wheel, my knee hurt I didn't know what whent wrong pieces of Peaci Broken peacies of the air filter were on the pavement to correct the damage has me sign for new1983 full dress HD ; which failed fiance approval . this happened in front of HD motorcycle store Hempstead New York .
you have a better clutch "friction zone" because it is a WET clutch as opposed to an auto's dry clutch. thou an auto does have a 'friction zone' but non technical people do not understand how to apply it to traction and force.
Awesome video thanks for posting, I rode a Suzuki 650 the past 18 months and just bought a kawasaki vulcan 1500Fi - This has put my mind at rest, ill practice in a car park first... Keep up the good work
The best straight forward self help motorcycle video I have ever seen! The techniques really work GREAT on my BMW GS. Thank you for making riding more pleasant!
I just took my new Road King around an empty parking lot getting a feel for the friction zone and rear brake power. That dip is unsettling, Jerry. I've got you in my head and making it happen though haha.
I've learned many things from your RU-vid videos, and was able to pass the driving license test. Thank you Sir. God bless you. - Your admirer from 🇮🇳 INDIA.
One of the best vids you have done on the basics..........Even a "Dufus" can do it. Now this big ol "dufus" is going to practice it, lol!! Thanks Jerry😁
Funny that I lean at my desk while watching the video. The Ride Like A Pro video is a great tool. Set these exercises up at your next club rally and have fun with them!
Awesome info. I’m moving up from a 690 lb Indian Chief Bobber to a 920 lb Pursuit and this is great advice. Thank you so much! Keep up the great work sir! I will buy your videos for sure. 👍
Thank you. Excellent video and advice. I have owned a couple of Harleys and sold them for the very reasons you stated in the video. Your advice has given me the confidence to ride again.
Bought Riide like a pro 6 years ago when I bought my first bike in 30 years. Built my confidence and riding skills right up there. I still watch that video at the beginning of every riding season and o ya ,bought a 800 LB Heritage and I ride her like a pro .
Thank you for these videos! We quit riding for 12 years because of having little kids and no time. Just got a bike this spring and you helped me relearn the basics! Again thank you!
I owe the entirety of my riding to this man and his teachings, in a set of DVD's from 2010. I cannot recommend the full video course enough and even to those who are experienced riders.
First exercise I taught my wife, 16yr old daughter, and 14yr old son when they wanted to learn. They all learned on my wife's Honda Fury, the one we had that they could all fit
OMG last night some guy was literally riding down the street with his legs straight out .. like a starfish or something. Guy got up to 20 or so before he put his fancy ass white sneakers on the floor boards. Had to slow down .. feet came out again My fiancé said LANDING GEAR !!! Better call the tower for permission to come in for a landing. Man.. it’s not a good look. I told her to give the guy a break bc it may be his 3rd day on the bike BUT what is he doing on a street glide on the road with his feet down going 20 mph if it’s his 3rd day on a bike ? Motorman …. I swear .. 🤦♂️ (this stuff happens every day around where I live)
Where can I sign up for your course? I am a fairly experienced rider, but I am a first time owner of a big bike. A 2022 Street Glide. I get nervous making tight turns at low speeds. I bought it new and now have over 6k miles on it. I would also love to get my youngest daughter to take your course.
I teach my advanced classes in Spring Hill Florida, www.ridelikeapro.com I have training locations around the country, just click on, OTHER TRAINING LOCATIONS if you're not in my area.
I totally disagree. Although motorcycle clutches run in an oil bath, they still wear a lot faster if you over-slip the clutch. I've been riding motorcycles for 67 years and use mostly throttle control with very little clutch slippage. That said, throttle control is more difficult on V twin vs 4 cylinder motorcycles. 4-cylinder motorcycles are much easier to ride and maneuver at slow speeds than V-twins.
This is probably the dumbest most uninformed comment I've read in a long long time. It's right up there with, ''I had to lay the bike down'' to avoid a crash.
