This video is so well done. I really love your channel. I am about to go to Europe for 6 months, with one month of just traveling, so it is really helpful to have these kinds of videos :)
Really good video. I like what you said about "reviews", take it with a grain of salt is so true......unless 100 bad and 1 good.....that's a lot of sodium!
It's crazy how good hostels are getting now. I was just at one in Barcelona that offered a free pub crawl, free dinner every night, free walking tours, and the hostel itself was comfortable and fun. Definitely not the scary, dirty place that some people often think about when they hear the word, "hostel!" :)
Me (No, not Ashildr, I had the name before Doctor Who, and I'm not changing it!) No problem! It's called Hostel One. Highly recommended. I posted some videos about it on my channel, in case you're interested in hearing my experience!
I like to stay at hostel, whether outside of my country or nearby my house. I always do nice things and follow all the rules. However, this video made me more understand and know some more things that I need to do while staying at hostel so, this is very useful and nice tips as well.
Super informative and helpful hostel tips! Thank you! I have just started out with my travel and it has been so far the best decision I made in my life. I have stayed in hostels before and one tiny little detail that I learned (the hard way) is bringing my own travel sheet or bed liner. I have very sensitive skin and even the simple detergent used in the bed sheets I sleep on hostels and even hotels make me itch. And it's very frustrating. Then my best friend gave me a travel sheet from Brave Era for my birthday she found in Amazon and wow! it has been a lifesaver plus it's 100% silk and this is the softest material of cloth I ever slept on. Just wanted to share especially for travelers like me who has sensitive skin and also those who want to avoid bed bugs and other creepy crawlers at night. I did treat it with insect repellent and it has given me peace of mind in my sleep while traveling.
Thanks for the tips, I'm going on another adventure and will stay at a hostel for the 1st time. This video covered most of my questions, thanks for sharing
I've been hosteling for many many months in the past. Get your bed linen, pyjamas, toothbrush, toothpaste and towel laid out before you leave the hostel for the day. It minimises fumbling around in the dark when you return. Earplugs are essential for good sleep as people wake up at various times and you'll get woken up by luggage grinding noises. Also leave your mobile phone in your locker overnight or slightly riskier, in your pillowcase under your head when you sleep. Hostels are lifesavers for budget people but you need to be practical and prepared
LOL I too have always been a fan of stealing breakfast buffet foods & packing lunches out of it. Not gonna lie ... I do it hotels, hostels, resorts aaaaand villas ... premium move!
"I'm not gonna tell..." haha! I will be staying in a dorm environment when I travel to Costa Rica next year. Got some good tips from this video! I need more things with hooks!
This video seemed pretty helpful. I will be backpacking Europe for my first time for about 2 months come September, and I feel like I'll definitely be putting some of the tips presented here to use. Thanks, Mari!
Great tips! Didn't think about leaving my night stuff out before going out. Hope I've never been THAT asshole... Listening to you speak about hostels reminds me of a disaster story I had in one. Idea for a next video...? Definitely!
One reason someone might want a private room is if they're traveling with a minor. I grew up traveling and when we stayed in hostels my mom would look for a private room (you never know who else is staying there and what their history might be). Ive done it with my son too after getting rained out on a tenting trip lol. I dont recommend bringing little kids along but it's a really fun experience for a well behaved teen or preteen.
I'm planning to travel solo to Amsterdam and stay in a hostel. The only thing is I'm 28. will it still be easy to meet people or am I going to feel like an outcast because I'm older than everyone else? haha
Age is all about your attitude! Really though. While it's true that there will be a lot of people younger than you, there will also be people that are older. It's really not an issue! Just be friendly and people will be friendly to you. Have so much fun!!! Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities!
I enjoyed your video very much. You should put links in the description for the websites you mentioned as the onscreen text wasn’t there long enough to read it.
Most hostels I've seen advertised seem to be for younger people and backpackers. I want to stay in hostels, but I will be 58 when I go. Is it still a good option for me?
I've seen people of all ages at hostels! Just read the reviews first and maybe don't pick one that says there's a lot of partying, because that usually indicates mostly younger people (unless of course that's what you want!)
Gail Bourne i stayed in a 6 dorm hostel in Jamaica. 5 of us were attractive women 25 & under from all over the world, different flavors lol. our 6 room mate was a 58 year old brit man. we loved him and felt very comfortable !!
lucky! most experiences are fine i'm sure and in my mixed dorm (first time!) there were two males who are friendly, but the third was slimy and tried to hit on me. unfortunate experience so do be wary of those but i'm sure they're at a bare minimum.
hey mari, thanks you so much for the tips, im male 38 from indonesia, never traveling solo or stay in hostel, but after i see your blog, i kinda want to give a try to open up, and try to stay in hostel, in bangkok . let see how it goes, and security tips, about the handphone, laptop, walet, paspor?? thankssss
So I've been planning a trip to Europe for a month now. I'm about to book my flight for next year.. I'm flying in and out of London. I do plan on getting the train plain so I can travel. I need advice.. Should I book hostles and airbnbs in advanced or the night off? I really just want to explore Europe with not a super strict plan besides a few main points? Any advice?
Hey can someone tell me, I think Mari did a video on other recommendations but I cant remember what they were for. I think it was for places to stay or places to book when finding somewhere to stay. Any links to that video she did would be great. Thanks.
Sherry Mercado That's a good idea for a video! I'll try to make it happen! The weather in September ranges around 60s-70s, but could be hotter or colder, you never know! I'd say just bring layers :)
Mari Johnson Mari, thanks for the quick response! We are planning on visiting the 911 memorial but are only interested in seeing the memorial fountain thing. I've been reading online that you now have to pay an admission since they opened the museum. Do you know if the fountain itself is open to the public?
The fountains are in fact free and open to the public. I've been a few times, they're very moving and definitely worth a visit. You only have to pay to go in the museum and up the Freedom Tower. Hope you have a great visit!
hi!! Thank you for your useful tips for travelling! This video would be sooo helpful to me :D i'm just curious where people usually put on make-up in hostels - i heard doing make-up is kinda private so... then should i put it on in a restroom? is it okay if i put it on just on my bed?
Your comment is a bit old, but as Mari said both is okay. I do my make-up in the bathroom when its shared by many rooms and on my bed when the room has an en-suite, because I'm feeling like I block the bathroom for the other ppl in that dorm😊
recently i've heard that hostels are for backpackers and i was wondering if you're not a backpacker and just want to stay and travel around the cities are hostels still an option? also is there a time limit? i'm planning a month stay in australia. (:
+Liz Lopez hey! Hostels are for anyone! In Australia a lot of people stay in them long-term and most hostels have discounted weekly rates. Some hostels may have a time limit, just check first! :)

ok, I am planning to travel in most of Europe for the first time. I am a young 50 years old. I want to stay at hostels is there any age limits and your video was very helpful. I really like to meet new people so think this would be great for me any advice is helpful.
I will be traveling with a friend and we would want the cheapest accommodations possible. Would you say that hostels would be a good option? If so, what do you think the average price would be for us per night?
+mkp08706 There are no rules for this, just make sure it's not too loud and obnoxious and don't be the person to hit snooze a million times! I mean, I do that at home, but not in a hostel - it's all about being courteous!
