I just went Tenkara fishing for the second time. The first time I was alone and had no idea what I was doing. Zero luck. An experienced Tenkara guy took me out two day ago. It was a windless 28 degree day in SE Minnesota and we hiked through knee deep snow to get to the creek. The casting was way different than fly fishing and I took a bit to get the hang of it. Lots of trees along the narrow creek and we waded upstream. We used red necked soft hackle pheasant tail nymphs. He exclusively fishes nymphs. Despite the trees and my beginner skills, I caught 5 very nice size brown trout on a Tenkara USA Sato rod ( which I purchased used from a TU event). After 2.5 hours on the creek, the cold finally forced my frozen fingers and toes to quit. I experienced the joy and fun that your buddy Todd did and I am totally hooked. I cant wait for another 30 degree day to get back out there. I learned even more watching this fun fulled video. Thanks.

I love how excited you two are, it's very wholesome. Fishing (mostly fly and tenkara, but I do spin and baitcast here and there too) is one of my favorite things in the whole wide world.

I had to comment to say thanks getting me into tenkara! I’m a regularly fly fish and saw your videos and it looked like a blast. Got a rod a few days ago I took it out for the second time at the lake and met a guy who had never fished and with a little coaching, in 20 min he caught a 15-16 inch rainbow (bigger than any we’d caught all day by a couple inches) and couldn’t stop thanking me, got great pics and it made both of our days. Love the videos!

Just bought the Tenkara USA Hane rod and it comes tomorrow. Knotted the line to the tip of my fly rod yesterday and got a little perch. This video has me so pumped to go out this weekend

Really enjoy your videos. As a Fly fisherman for 45+ years I bought and fished my first tenkara rod this spring. Almost all my fishing has been with dry flies but after observing tenkara I thought I might learn a bit about fishing wet flies and nymphs by fishing tenkara style. I believe this to be true and would recommend others try tenkara for lessons that can be learned.

That first brookie was beautiful. After having my best day ever with a fly rod a few weeks ago with exclusively Rio Grande Cutthroats, I am reminded just how pretty they are in comparison. Your videos are the reason I got interested in Tenkara, and i couldn't have fished that creek with a standard fly rod... so THANK YOU for the push!!!

Another great video. I had a similar experience with a buddy of mine. He was pretty resistant to try Tenkara, but I got him to try. He loved it Now, he owns more rods then I do and is almost strictly a Tenkara fisherman.

Tenkara is so much fun. I fish mostly western but I will use my Tenkara rod when ever I get the chance. The casting is so intuitive. Put your index finger on top of the cork tuck your elbow into your side and just point your finger with a little wrist action. Tenkara is a great way to introduce people to fly fishing. It's great for people with mobility issues or limited range of motion. Smaller creeks have less people and generally more fish. I'd rather catch 50 fish and be away from chaos than catch 3 fish on an over fished river littered with trash. Tenkara allows you a much faster turnover rate which means your fly is on the water more. You can use a regular tapered leader with some practice and you can use your regular standard dry flies. I generally start with a 9' tapered leader 3x and add 4x to match the length of the rod plus a foot or so. I've used a 8'10" rod with 15' of leader. I was able to cast 25' with it. I tie some Tenkara flies but parachute Adams, mosquitoes, ants, bwo, caddis all work just fine and every fly shop has them. Good luck and tight lines.

Once I was driving and my Mrs asked out of the blue: -"What is the most beautiful thing you have seen?", and before I had engaged my brain I replied: -"A male brook trout in spawning colors!" For the rest of that trip I got to regret that statement! Oh, and I enjoyed this and subscribed. I was listening to the Orvis podcast a few days ago and a tip they said with cutthroats is to turn them upside down while you’re preparing to take photos. It disorients them and calms them down a bit

Great video and love seeing that joy when a fish is caught! What techniques were you using for manipulating the fly in the water? From what it looks like - I think you are drifting for just a moment then slowly raising the fly upwards in the water?

When I was a kid growing up in California my dad would take me small stream fishing and I was so excited to catch small fish. When I was 13 my parents moved me to Washington. There I fell in love with steelhead and salmon fishing. Chasing big fish became my passion and I abandoned small streams and small fish. Watching these videos has stirred somthing in me and I will be purchasing one of these rods. What brand of rod do you reccomend?

Yall outta try tennis river impoundment for bream, or crappie or bass with simple baits, or some colonial coarse fishing tackle. Also a float tube etc.

You should look in to designing a spring loaded telescoping landing net to make landing the fish easier and once released it is reset save the bend and scoop...?

I have been looking at getting into fly fishing since I moved to East Tennessee but I think you have got me decided on tenkara now because I am really only interested in fishing smaller, higher elevation streams. Do you recommend the Mizuchi as a good beginner rod?

So I guess I better save up for a tenkara rod. Seems to be a better solution to Eastern US creeks with overgrown trees almost to tight for fly fishing with the big long cast.

Nice tutorial. It's revealing to watch and hear the techniques explained to another person on video. A possible addition might have been a bit more on landing (e.g., when does it make sense to grab the level line with your free hand to control the fish in close, as opposed to dealing with the entire length of line and tippet). I think if you have basic fly fishing knowledge you will do great with the Tenkara. Don't over think it, just go out and learn as you go! Have fun and tight lines everyone!

Find it really interesting how in the US you tend to talk about size of fish in inches and in the UK we would almost always refer to the mass/weight ie a 1lb fish etc.. what is the largest trout would you think is feasible to catch with the tenkara method? Please give the answer in lbs as i have no idea what the size of fish inches means!!
