You've probably heard the old adage that "tone is in the hands." But what does that really mean? And what makes tone good? We asked 14 prominent acoustic guitarists to weigh in, and got 14 unique responses. You'll want to listen with a notebook in hand, because this episode is a treasure trove of practical advice, musical examples, insights, and exercises to try.

Great podcast AG Magazine! Far from a professional myself, the only thing I would add through decades of playing is that you don't need to chase tone. Tone comes with experience and getting comfortable with your own sound, and not necessarily from your instrument. This is not to say that a quality guitar won't make a difference (because it will), but it ultimately does truly come from all of you; your head, heart, fingers, and even how comfortable your gear is. I LOVE the sound of a good dreadnought, but find them absolutely cumbersome to play. I've discovered that I like an OM or concert-sized for what I do (which is mostly fingerstyle), so I don't need that cavernous body. I also prefer spruce over say mahogany tops. But you have to find out what you like. So less focus on getting that ultimate guitar, and more on the sound you have right now, with what you own. Record yourself and correct what you don't like. Then, when the day arrives when you step up in the quality of your instrument you already have the skill to match!

I was reading the and I stopped in the middle to see if I had written it. Honestly! I quit chasing tone.I prefer a mic or nothing. If I must plug in, I can,but nothing sounds correct and nobody really cares but the player.

I sanded the finish off the top of a 80's Alvarez Regent and added a home made brass bridge. Totally opened up this old box.

You can get good tone from a laminate guitar if you have patience and let it resonate, don't try to hurry the process. Naturally the better quality tone woods will yield more impressive results but the same principles apply. People generally put too much pressure on the top of their guitar and that doesn't mean squeezing it, just covering too much will inhibit its tone and resonance. Be gentle, treat it with respect and it will sing for you.

To reply, tap the message. Otherwise it won't be seen by the intended. Sounds absurd to me though

I found very little value in this hour. No offense but there is no answer. Picks, finger picks, acrylic nails, natural nails, nail and pads,no nails pads only.. everyone is unique. I have tried it all. A quality guitar with fresh strings and hours of daily practice and your will find your tone.
