One tip that I'd give is just start speaking. I'm an intermediate student and I'm sure the people who have heard me speak regretted it later but once you get into a conversation the words just come out. You may have wrong conjugations or use wrong words but as long as your point gets across it's a conversations and it's a great way to grow

What would that sound like in English? Is there any type of an example of how using wrong conjugations would seem to an English speaker? I’ve always wondered how broken my Spanish will sound if I say screw it and start to use all verbs.
@samstromberg5593
@samstromberg5593 День назад
@@clath2823 TL;DR: Specifically with bad conjugations, you'll still usually be understood, especially if you use redundant pronouns, and even if you're not you'll just be asked to clarify Yeah so the best example I can think of in English is (we actually do have conjugations, they're just a lot less common so people often don't realize it) "he goed" or "you is" and both of those are still absolutely understandable. They make you look uneducated if you use them while the rest of your speech seems fluent but if you're obviously a Spanish learner they'll cut you a lot of slack, at least in my experience I once had a Spanish lady stop me on the street and ask me if I spoke, and I told her a little, and she asked me for directions to the nearest bus stop. I literally just pulled out my phone and pulled up Google Maps, pointed and said "We here. That's it" (in Spanish of course) and that totally did the job Of course you should try to get the conjugation right but usually you're understandable and even if you get it atrociously wrong they'll probably just stop and correct you Vocabulary is a little harder to pick up from context so more often you'll be stopped on that one. But even when you get it wrong it can lead to some comical exchanges. I was once chatting in Spanish with a fluent friend of mine from high school and I said something about being "tonto díficil" when he just busted out laughing - makes sense, as I was pretty sure I used the wrong word but I just went for it anyway because that's what conversation is about. Turns out "tanto" means "a lot" or "super" while "tonto" means "dumb". "Stupid hard" works in English but not so well in Spanish Basically, one of the worst things you can do is try to prep your response in your head a bunch before you deliver it. It's (at first) probably the best way to ensure you don't use any wrong conjugations but it also pretty much guarantees you won't understand what the other guy is saying, which is way more important than speaking perfectly

Mexican American who has always dreamed of FLUENCY in Spanish. My mom used to talk to me in Spanish and I to her in English, but now I'm speaking to her in Spanish because I can be confident with her. I also forced myself to work at a Mexican restaraunt which is still a bit hard but after half a year im able to form better conversations and become more confident. A Spanish speaking environment has helped me learn casual and conversational Spanish so well. I learn the slang and even insults, I gain lots of confidence. Half of these people can't even speak English so I shouldn't ever feel embarassed if I mess up in Spanish, at least I'm trying to be billingual. I want to learn more languages but Spanish has always been my priority. I want to hold my culture close to heart and teach my children it. I think your idea of using "chunks" instead of individual words may be a good idea (in addition to using phrases in which the verb is already conjugated so we don't have to think about it as you mentioned in another video). That has much in common with how we acquire our first language (we don't know anything about conjugating verbs when we first learn to speak).

You are a wonderful teacher. You do what all good teachers do. You make your lessons relevant to the student. You provide multiple examples of what to do (say, consider etc.) and explain why. Also, by displaying various backgrounds as you walked, you made us curious about what was going on and therefore engaged. I don't know if you consciously knew the value of that, or if it was something subconcious and intuitive, but it was highly effective. Perhaps being a poor Spanish student in high school is what makes you an excellent Spanish teacher now. Full marks (from a SPED teacher 😉).

Do a juice fast Which is FAR easier than water fast, weight will vanish, from the 4th day on (when the body is said to go into survival mode) the weight will come off. more so the More activity you do, which is kind of automatic as you get surge of natural energy, wishing to be busy, as there is huge amount of time created by not eating, it can be boring in early days, as body adjusts, but if you keep in mind the positives about WHY you are doing it, this will keep you inspired, NEED to drink lots of water, this stops the "yucky" feeling that often arises as the body releases contaminents. You can lose close to a stone /14 pounds in 7 days IF you keep active, i do weight training, kickboxing, so the body will devour excess weight in such strenuous or explosive exercise I'm actualy this so don't wish to loose weight, i do it as healthy pursuit, cleaning the body, three 3 day water fasts per year, you won't loose weight in these, but extended juice fast i have done for 23 days, so i know what happens to body weight You can have it Gone in 7-9 days on a juice fast WITH activity, otherwise it will be months eating less, being more active

This reminds me of learning to dance Cuban salsa (casino). The man is leading and has to build the ‘vueltas’ to make a sentence. For this you can use certain patterns, that fit natural together. As a male you add some standard steps, while you are planning the next complicated move. But everything happens in a flow. Dancing casino is very much like speaking Spanish.

If you speak enough, one magical day you will stop translating in your head all the time. It takes time and is frustrating, but it is absolutely worth it. When I moved to the US I was allegedly level C1 ("fluent"), but I was still translating in my head all the time. It was exhausting. It took me a good 3 months to finally stop thinking in Spanish, translating in my head, and producing (bad) spoken English. There is a school of thought that says language instruction should focus on chunks or phrases from day 1, and I tend to agree with this. I will say that translating phases word for word can make for good comedy - they really do not always translate well at all word for word!

Now that I'm using Qroo's bundling into chunks technique, I am always seeing and hearing them together and I don't have to remember.. "Is it 'a' or is it 'de' or is it 'para'... What's more after I say them enough times as a group, when I hear myself put the wrong word in it sounds like someone hitting a sour note singing. I have found that most men hate to read and that´s tough! Intelligent men learn to love it. Everyone digs the cute caveman and, he´ll always have a known place at the BBQ so again, personal taste, however, I´d rather be Niché or Plato at the party than David Beckham, a notorious idiot. So reading is, oddly enough, just like a conversation frozen on paper. Imagine that! Reading aloud in phrases and then modulating them on paper is the broadest spectrum. The go between C1 grammar and fluency is WRITING! When you write you are putting conversation from your own brain on paper. The pace is slow, the retention is 1000x more than something spoken into the air and lost forever and you can make all the mistakes on paper and find patterns! There´s no substitute for reading and writing and speaking aloud. Plus, you cannot work on your accent in real time! It´s too advanced for learning. You can work on a perfect accent on paper with role play and exaggerations.

Nice! Wish you were there when I started learning in 1975! This video almost lists muletillas, and made me wonder if you could instruct on how to sound like a Chilango, or how to weed out the extra stuff to understand them! Osea, pues bueno si, si si si, como que bueno lo que digo yo es, entonces... no mames, híjole, 😅😅😅😅

Yes, this is very helpful when speaking Spanish which has similar gramatical structure as English. However, this does not work at all with Japanese wherein the main verb in the sentence is always last. Just saying. Useful with Spanish, but not all languages.

I just started learning Spanish a couple of months ago and the good thing is I haven’t at any point started a habit of translating a whole sentence in my head before saying it as I usually just start speaking words. My speaking is slow with lots of hmm or ummm pauses at times as I grasp for the words that I want but this is the exact same thing we do in English when we grasp for words. I’m not afraid if I am grammatically wrong in Spanish when putting my sentences together because my italki tutors help me construct it correctly afterwards or say this is a more natural way to say it. The only way to get good at speaking is to dive in head first, make mistakes and learn from them. Practice is the key as with anything you want to be good at.

Correct, translation is by far the wrong way to go, especially if you want to speak real Spanish or any language you want to learn. Learn the useful phrases, understand the grammar structure and increase Your vocabulary.

Very interesting and useful concept. Getting the conversation rolling and not overthinking it is a great way to challenge yourself and level-up your Spanish. Beginners can also start by using conjunctions i.e. "conjoining words" like and, but, or and stretch the heck out of those! Lol

When things are obvious, and we're clever, but we still don't see them until they're pointed out. And you just pointed out something super obvious, but in the year I've been learning Spanish, I never noticed it. And no-one else pointed it out to me. Your two-way chat with yourself hit me hard. What a brilliant observation. Plus you've put it across so naturally, and stress-less, but without arrogance, which in itself is a talent. Thank you, my good man. I was just starting to feel very sorry for myself, stuck in 2nd gear, almost ready to drop it all, and you just changed all that, in one simple video. Brilliant. Thank you.

Hi Paul. Really appreciate your channel and all the useful tips. I asked ChatGPT if it could provide a list of sentence starters in Spanish and it instantly shot out this list of 20 Here's a list of useful sentence starters in Spanish that can help you form sentences in various situations: Me gustaría... (I would like...) ¿Puedes...? (Can you...?) ¿Sabes si...? (Do you know if...?) Estoy buscando... (I'm looking for...) No entiendo... (I don't understand...) ¿Cómo se dice...? (How do you say...?) ¿Dónde está...? (Where is...?) ¿Cuándo es...? (When is...?) ¿Cuánto cuesta...? (How much does... cost?) ¿Qué significa...? (What does... mean?) Me encanta... (I love...) Tengo una pregunta sobre... (I have a question about...) ¿Me podrías ayudar con...? (Could you help me with...?) ¿Qué opinas de...? (What do you think about...?) Quisiera informarme sobre... (I would like to know about...) Es importante que... (It's important that...) Si pudiera... (If I could...) A veces... (Sometimes...) En mi opinión... (In my opinion...) Estoy de acuerdo con... I totally agree with you. Been going at it maybe 3 months now and my god daughter is fluent is Spanish, which helps out too. My wife is German and i found the best way to get fluent fast is living in the country. I lived in Germany 2 years while in the USAF. Love your videos, i put in several hours per day learning at the moment.

Man....I don't know why I don't watch your videos religously? I guess I'm at a pretty advanced spanish level these days and assume I won't learn something, but the way you explain and teach things is so much more useful than traditional dense text book methods (I mainly learnt from homestays and travelling overseas). I have to say, I definitely at some stage switched from translating internally and responding, to naturally doing what you explained here, but never realised what it was that gave me more confidence to start automatically speaking without knowing what I was even going to say yet. Thinking back I use 'Que te parece' a lot, 'Hmmmm... Estoy pensando....Tal vez....' - Also, I think the next step from here is lets say you know the word deep down of what it is that you're talking about but it's not coming to you...rather than stop and derail, switch tracks by inviting the person (in spanish obviously) to help you think of what it is and you'll express what it is you want to say with a better flow. For example. "Hmmmm... Estoy pensando....que tal si vamos a jugar...ah como se dice...es Es como un partido de futbol pero en una mesa pequena?" - Person 2 - Futbolin? - "Exacto!, Vamos"

I've recently started learning Spanish through duolingo with surprising success - 17 days and I already have a basic understanding, assuming it's teaching accurately. Hola, hermano. Mi habla espanol, ¿tu? Yo soy bebo cafe con leche y azucar, y un taza o jugo de naranja. Mi madre es muy elegante, mi parro es marron y mi gato es gris. Yo necessito un boleto a un hotel, donde este telefono? Disculpe. Adios. I'm assuming that's obviously basic lol but I'm curious if it's correct:) I'll be subbing to your channel because you explain things very clearly and I was actually already developing that exact issue of going word by word
