I grew luffa for the first time this summer, one seedonly. It grew all over the side of my house. I got three luffa from it. I will plant them with a trellis nest year. So happy to grow something new!😃👍🏾

Hi, Luffa is actually a vegetable courgettes the young and the tender ones can be stewed or steamed. It is grown as vegetable in the Indo-subcontineint. One or two large courgettes are allowed to ripe and dry for puffs. The flowers are also edible can be fried in tempura. It's a larger version of zucchini. Try it out

I open luffa/gourd seeds with my teeth as you would a sunflower seed. Some get squished but most are ok and plant just the seed, no shell. It germinates very fast this way, a couple of days

I did the same thing!! I had a hell of a time with nothing germinating until did this!! Soak for 24 hours then spilt with teeth. Scuffing the edges as people recommended didn’t work. I’m just finally getting my gourds since it took so long to figure out the split method!

Next week will be high 70s and low 80s during the day. Time for plants to thrive! I wonder if I can grow using the super market luffa...

I had a hard time getting my seeds to sprout last year but the arbor shaded them some so that makes sense. I will put them in a different full sun spot this year and see if that helps😄

Are those a difference type of Loofa, as light colored seeds and mine (Mom grew them 20yrs ago), are black seeds.

The luffa she grows are the smooth luffa. Ranch 99 sells packets of smooth luffa and they are all white. The ridged seeds I've seen have been black.

I think your on to something with the older seed theory. Maybe the seed dries more as it ages and cause micro cracks in the shell to allow water into that space your talking about, really thirsty actually make a lot of sense.

Also I just started soaking my luffa seeds right before I came on here and saw your video, you got great timing!

Thank you for the tip. I was wondering why it took so long for my Luffa to germinate.
@wendiland

Hope this helps. Once you give it a snip it will pop up very fast as long as the soil is warm

My seeds germinated here in Florida in like 3-4 days. Problem is I tried transplanting one because my pot has a bunch in it but the transplant died. 😞 I wonder if I didn’t wait long enough

Can you do a video or videos about the easiest perennials to grow in food forests in every hardiness zone in America and the best way to get them growing?
@wendiland
@wendiland 3 года назад
I’ll give it some thought as it is difficult to find plants that works everywhere. The most universal would be annuals or grown as annual like edible weeds.

Hi. Just want to make sure. This green "basket " where you transplant luffa has the bottom or it is sitting on the top soil ? I am wondering if it's good idea to grow luffa in a big container.

How many plants should i get? I have two little seedlings now... Should i plant more to get luffas?
@wendiland
@wendiland 3 года назад
refer to my luffa harvest videos, or garden tours. That was one plant. but if you grow a few you can prune them and have a more steady harvest.

Best to store seeds in cool, dark, dry place. If it’s been just few years but kept indoor, out of the sun, it should be fine. Good luck!

I’m in zone 10 b a warm climate, every time I take the humidity dome off all the leaves like to droop is this normal?? Or how do I fix it? I’m about to plant it in the ground hopefully that’ll toughen up then
@wendiland
@wendiland 2 года назад
Young plants are used to high humidity. They will need to slowly be introduced to humidity outside the dome. Take them out of dome until leaves start showing a bit of wilt then place them back inside. Each time introducing them to outside the dome, they will learn to adapt better. Train them before planting outside to prevent stressing the plants.

Would a 3 gal container be big enough for 1 plant?
@wendiland
@wendiland 2 года назад
I would at least grow 1 in a 5 gallon. But 7-10 gal would be better.
