I only have Petsmart in my town, but found an excellent LFS an hour and 15 minutes away. The owner is very knowledgeable and has a great variety of fish with 400 tanks in his store. The Ph of his tanks is the same as mine which has made acclimating the fish very easy. So far that is the only place I've bought fish. Ive been very pleased and have been able to get every fish on my list there. I consider myself very lucky to have him within driving distance. If I need to source a fish online I think Dan's Fish is where I'll go.

Same thing for me! I will not go to any of the pet shops in my city - they keep their animals in very poor conditions. But like you, I found a wonderful shop about an hour away that I'll be buying from. All their tanks are planted, and their hamsters have sandy substrate!! Shoutout to Something Exotic, Kloof!

I just came back to fishkeeping after 30 years. My intent is to breed purple Dumbo 1/2 moon Betta's I have found my foundation pair in Thailand from a betta show line. Thank God they came healthy I was worried. They don't look like the video and pictures but close enough to work with. they also took a month to get here because of weather on my end Wisconsin. The pair I bought are quarantined in their own tanks alone for over a month now and look good and healthy. Another Thank God. I will be attempting breeding them soon "crossing my fingers" I also bought a pair of full gold Guppies from Dan. So I have 3 tanks set up and only have 4 fish lol But I am learning a lot and excited to be a fish mom.

Thanks to your vids, I'm feeling comfy ordering my Medakas from Aquatic Arts. I've had mostly good luck with AquaHuna and Flip, and I was impressed with Imperial Tropicals in Florida. I've had a few horror stories from some other places, but I'll keep it positive!

Wet spot tropical gave me epistylis. 2/2 orders of ive had bad experiences dealing with them. I honestly prefer hobby breeders the most to get my fish from.

Alright, I’ll try Moonlight. So far I’m 3.5 for 4. The Wet Shop, Dan’s Fish, and LRB blew me away with quality. The other “recommended supplier by people I respect “ was a disappointment. However, on reflection, I will say they are much better than my lfs and much much better than big box stores. I’m grading on a very high standard. 😀

Shipping cost is definitely a big roadblock for me. I completely understand why it costs so much, but I just can't do it. I also do not have any decent LFS. About 10 miles in one direction, I've got two general pet supply stores and about 15 miles in another direction there's a Petco. It's so weird, because I live in Florida! You'd think I'd have tons of options.

I live in southern California inland empire and all the best fish stores are in Orange county or further towards LA. The way my LFS described the system to me is that all the fish shops by LAX airport get first pick because they are right next to the airport, afterwards the leftover fish get sent to other shops more inland. The nearest BEAST of a fish shop to me is in Covina about 45 minutes to an hour away.

Hi Alex, great info here. I wanted to let you and others know the order I placed for blueberry snails from Moonlight Aquatics(4/20) is shipping out a week later than is the norm due to the owner, Chang, being out of town. He sent me an email stating he would rather be the one to inspect, pack and ship himself. In email he stated my order will ship on 4/29 and I will receive my order next day. Customer service = top notch in my book. I’m looking forward to this, my first shipment from Moonlight. Expensive shipping, indeed, but I trust your judgement and choices of where to buy online. Dans, LRB - both highly recommend! Never an issue getting super healthy fish and shrimp. Thanks for sharing with us Alex! 😊☮❤🐠🦐🪴

I’m lucky enough to have 3 independent LFS within 40 minutes. A friend owns a pet shop about 75 minutes away. He sends his import lists to me. Also have 5 clubs within driving distance. I only buy online if there is a fish available that is uncommon. I recently purchased Aulonocara aqualonium from Imperial Tropicals. Have never seen that peacock species in 55 years in the hobby.

I've never done overnight fish/crustacean shipping. Shipping USPS 2-3 day has never once been an issue and I've done it dozens of times. I find it completely ridiculous that people think that these animals that can be shipped by the hundreds in a few gallons around the world over the course of days to weeks are suddenly going to croak if they're shipped in a half gallon to a gallon and in quantities like 6-18. It's frankly ludicrous. Yes the large quantities in relatively small containers is extremely stressful and frankly CRUEL, I'm not advocating that. But it is happening and the vast majority of the fish are fine. Granted, the high stress introduces disease and this is why a strict quarantine process, either in the part of you or the reseller is KEY. But when you're ordering a handful of fish or maybe two or three handfuls of fish and it's being shipped to you in a gallon or two of water from the next state over or even across the country, the fish can absolutely survive for 2 to 3 days traveling by ground on USPS or UPS. Overnighting fish purchased in the same country is a way for the seller to push high costs on the customer when the same DOA policy can apply it with USPS. Aquahuna, neighbor of yours if there in washington, ships only usps, charge is only $13, and I have never had any DOA fish from them. With over 100 fish purchased from them.

Well I'm glad you've had good luck with it. I just got some beautiful angels shipped 2 day and they were super happy and healthy. However my former address, things spent an extra night at the postal hub and werr always 3 days, due to this.... I had several shjpments of fish die that way. But usually cheap fish are partially cheap because they ship well... aquahuna I've heard great things from and also terrible. Aqua hung is simply a rebrand for online retail, but it's actually a little store in a strip mall near the airport called G&H goldfish. They have fine fish for just living in a community tank etc. But their blood lines are pretty low quality most the time unfortunately. Their cpds for instance, are so prone to inbred mutations and illness. Some stuff like their bettas. And guppies, tend to be really nice

@@Fishtory that explains my experience with their CPDs. Ordered 8 a year ago. They brought Some thing with them. 37 gallon tank stocked with 40 healthy fish was brought down to 15 after introducing the CPDs from aquahuna. It's fully recovered now, but it was really stressful when it happened. None of the fish had any signs of illness.

I have one good LFS within driving distance, and they're not cheap. They also won't buy, only give store credit, which discourages me from going there. I also can't often find what I'm looking for. So I pretty much have to shop online. I buy from Dan's, have never had an issue with his stock, everything comes through splendidly. I've also bought from Aquatic Arts and Aqua Huna, with good results. I buy shrimp online, too, as I can't find anything locally besides ordinary RCS. Shrimp Envy for the win.

Have any thoughts on using foam under a large rimmed tank for leveling and to further support the underside glass?

Hmm seems like it could work. The frame is really all that needs support if it is not a rimless tank...some people actually have glass exposed on the bottom and set tanks on a row of 2x4 beams with no actual shelf... I think this works up to 40 gallon tanks fine, since the glass bottom shouldn't be bearing any weight other than even water weight coming from inside the tank

Hi Alexander, i am new to the hobby but i watched a ton of videos and did a fair amount of reading deciding on making a bit of a mix of the walstad method with adding an active substrate ( fluval in plastic mesh bags under sand ) and i live just north of you in Everett WA. i am now at the point i feel secure in adding livestock at least in the micro/macrofauna sense lol. so my question is if you could give me any suggestions on any specific local areas youve found to gather botanicals for snails and the like and also any specific aquarium stores youve found like minded folks to pick the brains of. Up here in Everett the only aquarium store ive found that wasnt petco or petsmart used chloronated tap water in their own tanks so i had no interest in returning. any and all suggestions would be most appreciated. thanks and i hope you have a dope ass day EDIT if any of your suggestions are closer to Seattle that is more than ok. The travel isnt too far, sorry for reposting my question but i was not able to get your attention during your livestream and got too frustrated and left lol my bad.

Well thank you, welcome and yes... Moonlight aquatics near south Everett is a cool shop for the species and prices... then aquarium zen is a cool shop in that the owner does rimless ADA aquascape designer type tanks, but he grew up keeping dirted tanks and sells the best plants in the state. As for outside, I like lake serene, Martha lake lake Washington and lake Steven's...and just go explore creeks or ponds nearby. Even cement retention ponds if you can hop a fence lol

I've got a question that's sorta related to this video. I live in BC Canada and am driving down to California at the beginning of June via the coastal highway and Washington, 1st q: do you (or anyone else who reads this) know if it's possible to bring fish for a personal aquarium back to canada easily? And if yes, and I'm pretty sure it's yes, got any suggestions of places to check out on the west coast?

Yes you can. Some border agents will grill you...others don't care at all. Just check you don't have white clouds or banned fish.
