Back in the 70's, Bob Day (former USAF Pistol Team armourer) told me that running about 500 rounds of hardball thru a new 1911 helped to polish/break in the ramp and make them feed hollowpoint more reliably. I've done that with both my TISAS commanders (45 and 9) and haven't had any feeding problems with 185 and 200 grain jhp. Haven't tried any 230 gr jhp yet.
The Tisas Raider looks like a winner. In my 43+ years of 1911 ownership I've learned that more expensive doesn't always equal better. The most overrated 1911 I have ever owned was a $3,800 Alchemy (ACW) "Prime Elite", it was shiny and pretty to look at, but it didn't perform any better than my $1,800 Dan Wessons. Live and Learn...
I agree with you on the arched mainspring, never thought I'd meet someone who agreed with me. Everyone says I'm "wrong" for liking it (why can't they just say they prefer the flat?).
Like the Sonar Operator in Hunt for Red October said..when in trouble, it Runs Home to Mama. It's Muscle Memory and familiarity . Same goes for the A1 AR-15 variant.. with dozens of other options at my fingertips.
The arched mainspring point better . The flat mainspring , especially with the short trigger points low for me. Like the look of the arched one as well. My steel Parkerized Colt Commander came with the flat which I replaced with a steel arched Wilson housing.. Think I may be going for the 1911A1
I like the arched housing & short trigger too. The arched housing seems to push my hand as far up on the gun as possible when I grip it fairly hard. Nice to know I'm not the only one that likes them as well.
What I’ve learned about buying more budget priced 1911’s that have a lot of features that higher end 1911’s offer is you’ll need to upgrade parts to get the best out of it. It’s still a win because you still come out way cheaper even after the upgrades.
My experience with Tisas pistols, if you can take apart the frame and clean everything really good you will likely drop a pound in trigger pull. Remove any burs or rough spots from the trigger bow and other areas you may get it better.
For a combat handgun, 5 pounds is desirable for me personally. I really like tisas for filling in that void that colt has left for collectors. This was also a really detailed and professional review.
For some reason, I really enjoyed this video and I again am convinced that Tisas designs and manufactures excellent quality and performance 1911’s. Further, I’d wager that - with time, shooting, perhaps some minor feed-ramp polishing, and maybe a projectile with a slightly different ogive - JPH’s will function perfectly. However, with all this sincerely said, I already own more good 1911A1’s than I realistically will ever need. So, I won’t be purchasing one, BUT, were I beginning to accumulate !911’s now, I absolutely would buy a Tisas . . . imho, it’s an excellent 1911 period . . . and a great deal for the money. Les Baers come in a cardboard box! Back in the 1990s, Walther top of the line 9mm P99 came in a cardboard box and they cost $1,000 back in the early 1990s. Thanks for a great, calm, informative review. You have one of the best channels.

Looks nice. Don't underestimate the "budget" 1911. If made well they will work. I own several from RIA, Springfield, Kimber and Colt... they all have had issues with some hollow points and their own peculiar quirks. If maintained they work.
Sents I Ben into 1911s SA have never had a problem with there 1911s .my frist 1911 was a colt 1991 series 80 and a Commander 1991 series 80. This was around the year 1997 when I did know shit about 1911s. U til I was at the GUN SHOW later that year and a dealer told me how junk colts are. Plastic parts series 80 horrible quality control issues the he actually pointed out on the colts I had. So I sold al my Colts. Then a friend told me about SA 1911s. my first SA 1911 was in 1998 the stainless steel loaded champion that I still have today and now I have a few different SA 1911 and never had any problems with them.and I found out a few years ago about how good the 1911s are coming out of the Philippines. Like the Metro arms 1911s bob cut and the American classic 2. And the fit-and-finish puts any cold to shame for the price.
You did good. I wouldn’t buy an original M45 either but for reasons other than price. 2 of the 3 of the colts I have owned were not nearly as reliable as my Tisas. My Gold cup went straight from new in the box to a Smith for a trigger and safety job. Now the Goldcup is as good as my Tisas. Next 1911 on my list is the Tisas Stingray.
The Tisas Raider is my first 1911 style handgun and I love it. Previously I've had a couple steel Witness double stack .45's that I loved. Ditched them about 15 years ago when .45 got real expensive and stuck with 9mm. Pockets are a little deeper now and .45 seems more reasonable so I gave her a go and now I'm looking for a IWB holster for carry. Thanks for the in depth review!
My tisas 1911 I had gotten when I turned 21. I loved it so much that I got another tisas 1911. I haven't had any issues and I am planning on getting a 3rd one soon.

USMC 1981-1985. I had a standard 1911A1 during WESTPAC '85. Used it during Shore patrols in Subic Bay Philippines and Busan Korea shore patrols. Great gun. Always trusted it and have owned 3 standards and currently a commander.
Semper Fi Marine, you got out just about the time I went in (85-91). Even so, I was issued the 1911A1 (as well as the M16A1) during my entire time in the Corps.

I was surprised that it worked as well as it did. I was not surprised with the hollow point ammo results. If you want to fuss with this pistol a little it could be great. If you don't want to fuss with it it's good enough.
I'm a 1911 guy. I've carried a 1911 basically everyday sine 1977. I'd carry this gun! I like it's features and I expect that some of what HR experienced was simple break-in issues that will work themselves out. In 200 rounds this gun might be eating up hollow points, and the shots might be even more centered. I bet that the shots going left is more a roughness in the trigger than HR. Nice gun, excellent shooting.
Bought one 2 weeks ago. Felt really good. The Slide to frame fit is excellent. The slide js fitted to th3 frame wirh no overbite or under bite. The extractor head is ended to the slide as well as my Ed Brown. The front of the alide has a slight beveled on the corners and edges. The trigger isn't bad. Not superbly crisp like my Les Baer, but very livable. I cleaned ajd lubed it. Greased the slide and frame rails. I experienced numerous failures to lock into the battery. Took it to my gunsmith who poloshed some of the internals, polished and radiused the extractor, and highly recommend that I just use light coat of pil and not grease on the rails. The thumb safety was not very positive, and felt a bit loose. So i ordered a plunger springa and plunger end tubes, installed it, and it clicks on and off very well now. Took it back to the range. It didn't like my wilson 10 round magazines but did fine with the wilson 8 rounders. The 10 rounder mags always had the first round flip nose up and jam th3 slide. It appears that the higher spring compression was at fault as the 8 rounders worked just fine. So i will just use my Ed Brown 7 round mags. I bought this as my truck gun. I dont expect peefection like my Baers or Browns, but i won't have a coronary if i scratch it l or ding it.
Very nice 1911 and great shooting by HR as we’ve all grown to expect! Take the wind out of it and the 25 yard freehand group was setting up to be the best group of the day!
I am probably one of the last people who has an "expert 45" Qual on their NSIPS the Colts we had jammed like crazy because maintenance with Recon was bad on the handguns and the Wilson combat mags were full of dip spit and dirt. When it shot however, it was great! I wanted to own one for awhile but as a lowly junior NCO I don't make m45a1 money. This seems perfect and am picking one up soon.
Quick observation here, this gun is basically the same as my tisas B45R duty with a few small differences. The raider has the lanyard loop, a flat trigger, 1 extra rail slot, and it’s desert tan. Other than that it’s identical. My B45R is super tight with no wiggle anywhere. Full disclosure on my B45R though, when I got it I had 2 problems. 1st, I had to file down the inside nub of the slide stop because it was slightly too long and making contact with the bullets and causing premature lock back with rounds still in the mag. I could see a lot of copper on that part of the slide stop and also there was no jams, just slide stop was engaged. Once I went over that nub a few times with a stone the problem was gone completely with 100% reliability. However I ended up replacing it with a Wilson combat bullet proof slide stop just because I felt it was a part worth upgrading. 600 rounds after that still no malfunctions. My second problem was the thumb safety engagement/disengagement. While it was functional it didn’t have that positive click I like on my 1911 thumb safeties. Guys in forums said to file “this” and file “that” on the thumb safety to make it have that positive click. I thought I would just replace the plunger tube assembly with a Wilson combat part for $4 before i did any filing and tweaking the thumb safety. Wise choice because that was the fix I needed, it now clicks as positive on and off as any quality 1911 I’ve ever experienced. Upon comparison of the springs of the plunger tube assemblies i noticed the Wilson combat spring was noticeably longer and stronger. I also replaced the recoil spring with a heavier Wilson combat recoil spring. I never experienced any feeding malfunctions with ball or the 30 hollow points I’ve run through it but I thought that was an smart upgrade as well. I still plan on upgrading my barrel link with yet another Wilson combat part in future just because that’s one of the weak point of 1911’s over time and I feel Wilson’s parts are way higher quality since his aren’t mim. So I paid $449 for my tisas and put another $80 in it and now it runs and functions as good as 1911’s that cost 2-3 times as much. It’s amongst my most accurate handguns I own and even a guy who was shooting a nighthawk 1911 next to me on one visit was impressed, especially for the price and said he was gonna buy one to tinker with. Also I believe the mags that come with these B45 variants are mec-gar, or at least they used to be. That’s what came with mine. I order a couple more and 3 Wilson mags and all are 100% reliable. Tisas offers these guns for an excellent price but to do so they will need to be upgraded with about $100-150 worth of parts in my opinion. The springs on these guns seem to be part of the cost savings corner tisas cut and should be replaced asap in my opinion.
Really those are hot and no reason to use a bigger bullet and they won't plug , great energy and ups the old 45 to 40sw energy.I carry the 165 in 40 and I have shot every boutique round.
Back in November 2020 I got a little cash from a family land sale and decided that I was going to get myself a high quality handgun to replace the cheap one that I was carrying. I had my heart set on a Ruger GP100 357 with a 4"barrel but that wasn't happening in my small town. The only 357s that I could find were Taurus snubbies and that's a hard pass. There were polymer 9mms from pretty much every company but I simply don't trust a 9mm to save my life without using several rounds and that just adds legal problems to the situation, so I saw that my shop had two Springfield Range Officers in 45 acp, one steel frame full size and one aluminum frame 4" compact brand new for $850.00. I decided to come home and research the RO series and see how good they were. I must say that I was impressed by the performance. The Springfield 's were outperforming even $1500.00 Kimbers. The next morning I headed back to grab the full sized model and just my luck, it was already gone, so I got the 4". I love that pistol. 100% reliable and extremely accurate. The only regret is that I'm limited to standard pressure ammo. I really want a full size steel frame so I can get a 460 Rowland conversion kit for it. People that think the 10mm is powerful should do some ballistics research between the two. The 460 is putting out over 1200 ft/lbs plus of energy. The 10mm can only dream of that kind of performance, even with the hottest Buffalo Bore ammo. That would be my woods and hunting pistol and my 4" is gonna stay my EDC until I can afford a GP100 357. Since I open carry, size isn't a problem except for the weight and I'd rather be a little uncomfortable with a heavy handgun than carry a small, light polymer pistol in a barley capable caliber with 15+ rounds. With proper shot placement, a single 45 or 357 HP bullet will stop a threat better than a half dozen 9mms. And there's plenty of data available to back up that fact. Thompson and Legarde have already proven that the 45 is the best caliber for human defense way back in 1904. And the 357 is even better at one shot stops since it's introduction in 1935. The 9mm has only been popular in the US since the late 80's when the military adopted the M9. And it wasn't for it's stopping power, but just to make NATO and the government happy.
Nice video. I will always watch a video on a 1911. They are just the best handguns to shoot. A video idea: A shoot off of all of your 1911 45s. Compare them for accuracy, 2 shot drill speed/accuracy, failure drill, etc. Plus we get to see all you 45s at once!
Excellent review as usual. I've always liked the 1911 and own 5 with 3 being Colts, including an M45 A1. Having some exposure to the Marine Corps, I wanted one when I first saw it in the pages of American Rifleman. My addiction might lead me to get one of these too, and you will be to blame. 😂🤣
I’m with you on the short trigger, but I prefer the flat mainspring housing. I love how this tisas, in the price range, is both cerakoted and has the trigger guard undercut.
Enjoy seeing reviews of M1911 pattern pistols. I also like the .45 ACP cartridge (God's pistol cartridge). Mine started as a well-worn M1911 with a flat housing. A pistolsmith pointed out all the worn parts and suggested a complete rebuild. What I got back was essentially a new pistol, functions like a dream with service ammo. I realize that the normal drill people use is to second-guess the pistolsmith and keep f###ing with it until it no longer works. The only thing I did was a rear sight insert that was easier for me to use. I tried other pistols with arched housings. I happen to like the flat housing because I'm USED TO IT. I don't know if I would like arched if I STARTED with it. Flat works for me. Thinking of building another gun, this one in .45 Super. This requires a fully supported chamber and recoil spring with more hair on it.

Great video as always! A thought on the hollow point ammunition. I have two 1911's, a much older Springfield Armory and a much newer Kimber. I was having issues with hollow point feeding with the Springfield, and found that Hornady Critical Duty and Critical Defense run just fine out of it, while other hollow point ammo did not. Probably because the critical duty/defense line isn't like a traditional hollow point, but just figured I would mention it as maybe it's something you could run out of the Raider.

Fabulous!! I have two of the govt 1911A1, cannot believe the quality, fit & finish for south of $400. 3rd LAAM BN at Cherry Point still issued the original 1911 to SNCO & Officers in the 90/91 Gulf war. I had a colt mk4 series 80 I bought in '89 for $680. In my opinion, for the money today, you cant beat the tisas line up! (Look up their manufacturing plant on yt, state of the art!)

I'm an A1 Arched Mainspring Housing guy...as that was the deal from 1924 through 1985. The original Flat Housing became popular because What's Old is New Again syndrome crept in , as it does. I own nearly 30 1911's is various configurations. My preference is what's known to me. I like my Tisas Raider, it's more gun than your wallet says it is. The Girsan variant and even the Colt M45A1 are less than what your bruised wallet says it is. My one Tisas gripe is my Barrel Link was not cleanly machined or polished well enough. But compared to the jagged internals of the Girsan?...its a Custom build. I know many others have hammered Colt over its Customs Shop level of work being horribly absent in the M45A1. Count me among that number. I'm enjoying my Raider and the Tisas 1911A1WG...both Home Runs at a Doubles price.
Favorite?.....my 1944 GI Remington Rand that started it all , regarding stuff I've paid for. I have Custom builds , Double Stack 2011's . But a fun to shoot piece is FrankenGun. FrankenGun is an Original AMT of Arcadia California frame mated to a WWI era Colt 1911 Slide with Zero Original finish..I bought the Pound Mutt and ended up with a great companion full of NM parts. My favorite is the Wider WWI era Colt Hammer...Only Tisas even tries to replicate that piece...and they do a respectable job doing it. I have 2011's with High End parts , Colt Slides , to include a NM Gold Cup Trophy Slide, one mated to a Para Ordnance of Canada Frame...another mated to a Rock Island. I love them , P14 Mags and all.
I'll tell you one more Tactical I like. The Springfield Armory MC Operator...that an a basic load of 7 , 8 Round MecGar Magazines and you are cooking with Gas.
It's refreshing to see a no-nonsense review of this pistol! I have 2 Tisas 1911s (the US Army model that I've left stock, save for a set of Rosewood grips that were transplanted from my late grandfathers USGI 1911, and the gen 1 Duty in stainless) and, to be blunt, I'll put them up against Colt and Kimber any day of the week and twice on Sundays. The quality is superior and the tolerances are what you would expect from a high-end name, but without the higj-end price tag. You certainly earned me as a subscriber! -- ET2(SW), USN 95-99

Great review! Regarding the issue of pulling shots to the left. I bet it's the trigger length. I too prefer the short G.I. trigger and arched mainspring housing on my 1911s. If you take you hand and form it into the shape it would be when holding a pistol, go through trigger pulling motion, and watch how the trigger finger moves. The very end section of the finger, where you would contact the trigger, does not move independently. Try as hard as you can, but you cannot move the end of the finger independently from the rest. Also note the pivot point where the finger actually bends. Now, as you pretend to grip the pistol, start out with the joint of the finger bent nearly to a right angle, and as you pull the imaginary trigger you will see the tip of the trigger pulls straight back in line with what would be the axis of the bore. Now relax the bend in the finger, as if you were contactting a long trigger, and go through the trigger pull motion. You will see the end of the trigger finger moving in an arc out towards the left. Now do the same action with one of your 1911s with a short trigger and again with the new Tisas USMC style pistol. I bet you see the muzzle of the long trigger pistol trend towards moving to the left. It's the simple geometry of the trigger finger. I have ALL of my 1911s set up with the arched mainspring housing and a G.I. length trigger. On my Tisas Duty I used an actual Colt-made mainspring housing that looked brand-new (probably from a Colt pistol that some misguided soul had removed from his Colt to have it replaced with a flat housing). The G.I. length trigger actually came from the parts department at SDS, who is now apparently owned by Tisas. Worked great.
@tpelle2 -- Good point about how our fingers work. I have two thoughts on that from my work on trigger control. First is semi-blasphemous (depending on one's perspective) -- you don't have to operate the trigger with the "pad" of your index finger, and it will be more reliable for some folks to use the first distal joint/hinge, rather than "pad". It varies depending on anatomy. Second is, everyone has different finger dexterity. Hold your fingers straight out and try to articulate each segment of your index finger. Some can only bend it at the "big" joint / first knuckle, and have a hard time independently articulating that last hinge. Piano players and guitarists and musicians who rely on dexterity often work on finger articulation exercises. So one's firing finger work can be improved through those.
Just got a Hk45 compact tactical. Havent had a 45 auto in a while and grabbed it days before they are banned in WA due to it having a threaded barrel. I did have a Kimber 1911 Custom target 2 i bought from a friend when i turned 21. It was decent i just didnt care for the target sights and sold it to another buddy. I only heard of Tisas just recently and one came in to the shop i worked at part time. The GI model. It seemed well fitted and good quality. I want to get this model. If i can only have 10 rounds i may as will have 10 rounds of .45 auto. Ill save my standard capacity 9mm mags for a rainy day. Since they are also banned in WA.
lol, order a wilson combat spring for my Tisas raider I bought on your recommendation. Two and a half months later I'm on hold trying to get a refund since it never showed (I've since got one from Midway). These Turks are knocking it out of the park with what they're producing, seemingly specifically to the American market. Tisas (with their 1911) and Girsan (with their Hi-Power clone) make it difficult to support "american" manufacturers when you don't really know if they don't outsource their parts from other countries to begin with.

FMJ as we know, I’m not going to scold my 1911 for not liking the hollow points. Lol It’s a really beautiful firearm you’ve got and I believe will give you many years of enjoyment. I’m with you Chief. I like the arched mainspring housing as well. My first Series 70 I got in 1985, and the pistols issued to me in Desert Storm with the 101st came with the arched.
I see you're happy with yours as I am with my b 45 carry, I don't mind my flat mainspring housing, my only 2 dislikes on mine aesthetic the forward slide serrations and the ambi safety. Overall I consider it a huge step up from the GI model, especially the sights.
Excellent Video and Review! The Tisas 1911 design Pistols are garnering quite a good reputation. I'm considering the Commander sized Tisas 1911 Carry model. BTW, the standard Remington 185 grain JHP's feed very nicely in most 1911's without feed ramp modifications, and have a good stopping reputation.
Tell me about it. I got a call about an Un-fired Tisas 1911A1 Duty with 2 Sets of Grips around Noon today. I owned it by 1pm. Now I'm ordering Upgrade Parts ..to Include an A1 MSH without a Lanyard Loop..going Flared Magwell on this one.

I have a question Sir, I just purchased a Colt Gold Cup Lite, the trigger is a solid 6 lbs , I have not fired yet. Should I do a trigger job now or fire first . Thank you for your opinion.
Wind is a valid excuse. I've had days when the wind blew so hard that I could not stand still. I like the Hornady +P 200 or 230 gr hollow points, they're not so flat and square at the nose of the bullet.
I have had several of the TISAS 1911's, and find them to be a useable firearm for most any situation that you would want/need a firearm for. The only drawback I have found is the limited round count of the magazine. But that just means you can't miss as much as most do with the Glock 21. I am currently using one of the TISAS 9mm 1911 and so far have found them to be a Very Good 1911. Good enough that I may change it into a .38 Super. I'm going to try and have a few of the .45 and the 9mm in stock in the future.
i own three tisas 1911's they are the three non bantam bobtail models, 2 came with light triggers one is flat awful, in my experience the girsan 1911's are better, especially the triggers, but they didn't offer the bobtails i like so much. Tisas ships nice mags with their pistols, usually mec gars. I will say the materials the turkish use to build 1911's seem to be top notch and with upgrades they hang with some much pricier pistols, my stingray carry in 9mm hangs in there at the range with my Springfield emissary also in 9mm.
This one has everything I'm looking for in a 1911 (except the FDE finish). This is a rare pistol, in that comes ready to go straight from the box. [edit to add] Outstanding review!
Great reviewx. The 1911 design and product has been proven and time product improved. It has been shown it to be a great pistol. I agree with most of your comments. I am a straight versus humped main spring housing type. I appreciate that it comes with the lanyard ring as many companies do not include them. Three mags would be nice if they are reliable. I am sure you agree that a good .45 trigger job would improve the use. New guns in general need the work. My favorite use guns are 1911s; an old 1954 era 1911 Colt National Match rebuilt in the 1970s and a Sig 1911 tuned by the Sig factory that I still carry. Your RAIDER, I am sure will do the job. The 230 gr. Ball ammo has and I am sure will do the job if you don't have HPs. Good review.
I have the Tisas Tanker and it will run rounded hollow points just fine. Will not run Hornady Style ammo like seen on the video with the pyramid type straight edges. Hardball & rounded hollow points work great really interested in this 1911 great video.
Wondering how many rounds you fired in the new pistol before trying the hollow points? My first Tisas I put eight rounds of hollow points and five jammed. Shot about 100 ball ammo then back to hollow points with 100% reliability. 1911s still need a break in in my opinion. Try the HOP again after some more ball.
I will not buy South American or Turkish guns, they look kinda rough and resale is another factor, but if people like the price and quality that's ok by me and I see lots at the range, those sights look real good.
HR you might be interested in the Tisas 1911 A1 Desperado 9/38 which is a chrome commander package that allows you to switch barrels and magazines to fire 9mm and 38 Super.
I, too, prefer the arched housing and short trigger. Like to get as much of my support hand on the grip panel as possible and the short trigger makes me a little less prone to the right-hand shooter hitting low left when shooting at speed.
Thanks, nice review. While others may disagree, I feel that this type of gun should feel FMJ without any problems and as you pointed out, it maybe selective on JHPs. Also different magazines may impact feeding characteristics.
