The law of diminishing returns suggests that Tudor, Rolex or Omega etc - are in no way 10 times a better watch than the Tissot Seastar 1000. The Tissot offers incredible value in a package and price point unmatched by any other brand, frankly. Automatic movement (ETA modified) to give an 80 hour power reserve! Ceramic bezel, screw down crown, exhibition case back and 300m WR etc - in a watch that has the looks and style to hold it's own against competition 10 times the price. Superb watch ... no brainer. Pocket the 5k you save on the Luxury Brands and go get your Dive Master ticket - practical vs poseur.

I bought this watch about a month ago, I got the limited edition Japanese one which has a fabric band, but ended up purchasing the steel bracelet and swapping it out, so I like the watch even more now. I find it fairly accurate and comfortable, but I especially love the style, so much that I use this more than my Tissot Complication chronometer watch which cost twice as much. Nice review man, I agree totally with what you said.

You are doing great. I like your style. The photography makes the seastar look like a $5k watch. The review points you've come up with really resonate with me and what I'm looking for in a watch review. I also like that you have limited watch snobbery and don't automatically play down the Tissot because it's not and omega/Tudor/Rolex. I also like that you WEAR THE WATCH the whole review, which is something I'm surprised more reviewers do not do. I'm very impressed and have subscribed to your channel and liked the video. Great watch. I especially like that the Swatch Group is now using the 80 hour power reserve on many of their models. I do have a question. Why don't most companies focus on making their automatic watches more accurate? After all, it is a timepiece.
@watchspec
@watchspec 5 лет назад
Hi Thomas, Yes, the 80 hour power reserve is very helpful if you don't have a watch winder. As far as the accuracy of automatic watches, the only way to improve it is higher quality materials that are more stable with gravity/temperature/magnetic fields/etc, and manufacturing processes that improve tolerances and initial spring settings. There are just a lot of variables to combat with an automatic movement. There are watches that do focus on improving accuracy, but these are the expensive watches such as Rolex, and you definitely pay for this accuracy. To achieve accuracy at lower price points, you are looking at quartz movements; though these are not as interesting or true to watchmaking history or tradition. You can always look to regulate watches if they run consistently fast or slow. I have a series of how-to videos on this process if you have any interest: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3KLzO7-N2w8.html I hope this helps. Thanks for watching! -Jon Rihtar

Many Thanks for the comprehensive review; the Seastar is a very good dive watch, with high technical specifications. It is also dressy and stylish and could be used as an executive watch. However; the bracelet width at 21 mm is odd and should be 20 mm with butterfly clasp. The bezel numbers seem to disappear in direct light. Do not have any idea on the bezel click action and QC alignement, so please advise. Otherwise, the Seastar is almost a perfect Swiss watch at this price point.

Hi Mauricio, That is a very tough question since these two options are designed for different uses, different target buyers and different price points - the Tissot for those looking for a luxury timepiece with focus on high-end style, and the SKX as a entry automatic with focus on sport/diving performance. How does it feel compared to the solid bracelet?

@watchspec 5 лет назад
Hi megaman 123, Thank you for the very kind words. It is true that I have seen higher quality feel on the clasps of other watches. Hi Bor Ko, That is awesome accuracy. Especially at this price point, as you said. I too am not a fan of rubber straps. Hi William, The blue/black dial version is probably the most popular of all the Seastar offerings. That is the proof that people fall in love with that very unique dial. The only thing to note is the blue/black dial version it is offered on a rubber dive strap, as opposed to the stainless bracelet of the other versions. William Rampersad I looked at both, for me the blue dial version is waaaaayyyy more attractive, and the rubber strap is exceptionally comfortable, (I also think it looks better) so I went for that. Hi I bought the blue black dial with rubber strap and I love the watch itself, very impressed. The blueness is subtle except in strong light. However, I wanted the bracelet so bought it separately BUT I've ended up reverting to the rubber. Just not impressed with bracelet quality compared to my £200 seiko or my twenty year old Oris. It's inflexible, has sharp edges, and the clasp is basic. Would like to know if this is typical tissot. On this watch they have to save money somewhere I guess.

Are you sure that the powermatic 80 movement can be regulated by the watchmakers??? I heard in order to regulate you need to send this to Tissot. Your reply should be highly appreciated.
@watchspec
@watchspec 5 лет назад
Hello Imran, We discussed this a few months ago if you recall. You can find our previous discussion in the comments below. The high-tech escapement in this watch has no regulator; so the rate is set at the factory with a laser, making the manual rate adjustments normally required by a mechanical watch unnecessary. If your watch is running off and need adjustment, you would need to send it directly to Tissot to request they use their laser system to modify the timing. So while regulation is possible, it can only be done through Tissot. I hope this clarifies what you need. Let me know if you have any additional question. -Jon Rihtar

This watch is only about $400 US dollar quality watch ... Mine at 12 oclock the hands are not that much straight line align, and I see the watch in this video too ... And some times the date adjust won't work, I had to push the pin in and out several times to make it works ... Sometimes it will slow 60s a day, and few days later it will slow 25s a day ... And it's too heavy ...

Mikel LL ETA movements are supposed to run -15/+15 seconds per day, and it’s a reliable movement, so you might want to get that checked under warranty. It’s also possible the movement has been magnetised, although that shouldn’t explain your issues with the date.

Hi Imran, I'm sorry, I realize I was not clear about this. Regulation is possible, but only by sending it in to Tissot to be regulated using lasers. The end-customer will not be able to regulate this. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for watching and correcting my comment. Kind regards, -Jon Rihtar

Hello Jon, yes you are mostly right that you need to get it back to Tissot. When they will hear the watch runs 6-7 seconds + per day then they may not accept the watch because to them it is quite ok 5+ seconds. But again we have some very finest watchmaker who will able to regulate exactly within 0.4+ did in my renently purchased Certina DS1 Small Seconds. More surprisingly I have bought a Tissot Quadrato having 7750 Valjoux movement running the same standard from the very beginning. However what I believe in watches 3 things are important 1. Price 2. Value for money 3. Accuracy. This is why I am never going to buy Seikos because I had a bad experience with my Presage with 4r35 movement. The Accuracy is horrible.

43mm 🤦🏻‍♂️ It’s such a beautiful and clean watch but why don’t they at least offer a smaller variant at 39 or 40mm?? All these brands are just ignoring an entire segment of the market.
@watchspec
@watchspec 5 лет назад
Hi SunsetSheen, Yeah, it's tough for many of us with these larger diameters. I will say, however, that larger diameters are more typical on dive watches as they are targeted to be more sporty. That doesn't mean that smaller dive watches don't exist, but it does mean the choices are slightly more limited. Thanks for watching. -Jon Rihtar

@@watchspec That'd be an awesome video idea man: "Divers under 40mm" I know of only a few available on the market: Seiko SKX013, Christopher Ward C60 Trident, and Zelos Mako. I'm sure there are others here and there but they're so few and far between. Great content and thanks for the reply.

I really want to like this watch but have too many reservations. The watch should have been 41mm not 43mm. The old 42mm version wore better. The hour markers look way too small compared to the fat hour and minute hands. Also the lollipop on the second hand travels over the hour markers which seems strange to me. Shouldn’t it run along the outside of them? The highly reflective ceramic bezel (poor legibility) and display caseback destroy whatever “diver watch” credentials they were going for. Instead of making an affordable Omega Seamaster Professional 300 it’s like they engineered this watch to be not as good as an Omega Seamaster.

Too general a comment, I have a BN0151-09L, great watch, I also have the Seastar, no comparison, presence on wrist, perfect finishing, 300m water resistant, hand assembled ETA movement, metal filled ceramic bezel, saphire crystal, 80 hour power reserve, and a true automatic. Some of the Citizen pro masters are nearly double of the price as well.

@@rickstard73 and Dead Monk 2, I love this conversation! Thanks for sharing. This just goes to show how different people value different elements in a watch. There is no right or wrong answer and I love that. It is what drives different style options, movement options, quality levels, complications, uses, price points, and all the combinations of these. All these options give us consumers a vast number of choices so we can find the watch (or watches) that work best for us, each of us at different stages of our life and watch journey. I find it exciting. Thanks again guys! -Jon Rihtar

Hi sandydenny, Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Not to discount your comment, but keep in mind that you can find stories like yours for every watch brand out there. I've even heard horror stories about Pateks, but that doesn't mean Patek doesn't make quality watches. It's just something to keep in mind. Also, in terms of the movement, the ETA 2824-2 is applied in literally hundreds of Swiss luxury watches. It is almost easier to list the brands that do not apply this ETA 2824-2 than to list all the brands that do - basically all the Swatch company brands, and even Tudor. I can't say it is a perfect movement, but its track record speaks for itself. Having said that, I know how frustrating it is to pay good money for a luxury watch only to find an issue that requires more money. I am happy to hear your C.Ward is working out for you. Thanks for watching and sharing. -Jon Rihtar
