And thank-you for watching.
The US Air Force has made a museum out of an obsolete intercontinental ballistic missile base. They have a guided tour that takes you underground through most of the facility. This silo was operational from 1964 to 1982 just south of Tucson Arizona.
Exploring and History - get On The Road with Norm.
We keep travelling around and seeing things.
We also like history, aviation museums, and things with engines.
Come along for the ride.

I pulled about 250 alerts at sites just like this one but at McConnell AFB in Wichita, KS back in the early to mid 70's. This brings back lots of memories.

7:58 I believe fuel was circulated through those pipes prior to being injected into the mixing plate to keep the bell housing from melting and to pre heat the fuel.
@AsbestosMuffins
@AsbestosMuffins 2 года назад
yes. almost every engine uses regenerative cooling to keep the engine bell cold enough to survive the rocket exhaust, not sure whether they used the fuel or oxidizer on the titan II's though
@sbreheny
@sbreheny 2 года назад
Yes, and I am pretty sure they are simply copper pipes (copper for maximum thermal conductivity). No material could withstand the heat without either ablating or having some means of being cooled (in this case, the fuel provides that)
@jwenting
@jwenting 7 месяцев назад
yup, steel pipes. Not aluminium rods. Still done that way to this day, though most engines now use preformed steel plate for the nozzles and wrap the cooling pipes around those as it's easier to mass produce.

4:23 Missile at the museum is a training missile from Sheppard AFB - never used with a real warhead never had propellant loaded. 6:19 brief look at the missile adapter section with cylinders containing metalized balls that were ejected as decoys for the reentry warhead - cylinders remained but system removed in 1975 after the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty of 1972.

Sept 2022 update - several commenters have indicated that the museum did special once a month tours that were more detailed. They took you down to the bottom of the missile and also showed you the crew quarters. This made me want to come back so I contacted the museum to request this special tour. The response is that the special tour has not been done since covid and it will not be done again. Instead the museum is working on a digital visual tour that will be available on their website. But I still want to go back and do a better job of filming. Many commenters have asked for me to slow down and be more descriptive.

It was called the "Top To Bottom" Tour, lasted about 4 hours, and literally took you from top to bottom of the complex. Going down to the flame detector ( The W as it was called) level at the very bottom was especially cool!

Correct, tubes. Fuel is what ran through it, It kept the nozzle cool as well as preheating the fuel. Oxy just ran into the oxy dome. The fuel went into the fuel torus then into the tubes and back again to the shower head where the oxy and fuel were mixed.

Are those cylinders on either side of the passageway shock absorbers? Also, I'd be interested in how much ambient noise there was in that space when it was active. A friend of my mothers used to serve in a silo and he said that it killed his hearing. He's near deaf now.

@ruthgar9753
@ruthgar9753 2 года назад
@@ontheroadwithnorm2024 Not too loud actually when things are running normally, at least based from my experiences with the Minuteman and Peacekeeper sites. Yes, there are motors that are constantly running, and aside from possibly needing some earplugs to keep from developing a headache when you're next to them for hours at a time, you get used to it. Under the not so normal conditions when stuff switches over to the battery operated systems, such as the emergency air conditioner, those motors run at a much higher pitch, and will give you migraines quickly, and could possibly even damage your hearing.
@timhamlett5042
@timhamlett5042 4 месяца назад
During my years as a launch crew member with the 374th in Little Rock the noise level in The control center was a constant 70 dB. 75 dB was the hearing protection threshold. You would walk out after a 24-30 hour alert dead tired because the noise level just beat the crap out of you.

Actually it's because access to the Minutemen system is very limited. Most of the silos are nowhere near the LCC . And the silo area is smaller area inside. ( Less maintenance needed because of solid propellent.) Getting access to the MM- LCC required permission from the Site Commander and Security Police .
@josephbennett3482

There's no tours of the Minuteman 3 facilities because they are all still in service and on active alert , the closest you can get to an active silo is by driving past the access road.

About 20 miles south of Tucson Arizona. Thirty minutes north of here is the worlds largest desert aircraft boneyard. Across the street is the Pima Air & Space Museum. They kept one of everything since the second world war. It is huge. Check it out my video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-votb_bLr4ZY.html

Similar engines but different rockets. After the Titian system was dismantled, most of the rockets were repurposed to launch satellites.

I thought that if one builds underground then he achieves reasonable ambient temperature, can save on heating / air conditioning and should be praised for being so ecofriendly.
