The Titan T-51 Mustang is a 75% scale replica of the original P-51 Mustang, an iconic airplane in American history. The p-51 mustang was flown by the Tuskegee airmen during world war II. The airplane is best known for it’s speed, agility/aerobatics and long range tanks. Of the more than 15,000 P-51 Mustangs that were produced for the war, only a few hundred still exist today. So to get your hands on a good operation P-51, You’re looking at about $2 million to $3 million.
This is where the T-51 Mustang comes in. For less than a 10th of the cost of the P-51, you can build a T-51 mustang kit. Clearly not the same airplane but close enough. The T-51 mustang will fly up to 215 mph and you have a low stall speed of about 50 mph. Being an experimental airplane means you have several different options for your engine, from a small rotax 100 hp engine to a much bigger GM auto conversion engine. The GM engine gives you a more realist roar sound compared to the Rotax. This is why many builders opt for the GM engine.
The Kit price for the T-51 Mustang starts at $65,000. And for a little over $100,000 you can have a complete flying airplane.
Here are some more stats of the T-51
Engine: 100HP - 300HP
Useful load: 470 LBS
Speed: 150 - 200 MPH
Range: 720 MILES
Kit Price: $65,000

Dan Hawkins one of the smartest guys I've ever met designed this, he wanted a mustang but didn't have millions, so went to the moose jaw air museum, took a bunch of pictures,, and drew up his own plans and built an airframe, modified a Suzuki engine and installed blower , and designed the over the center cam, retractable landing gear, Dan flew it to Oshkosh where he was approached by the owner of Titan, who bought all his plans and templates, then hired him to come and tool up for production. You seldom hear the whole story, and those who deserve credit seldom get it. One of smartest guys I've ever met.

That's a wonderful little Mustang. One of the neat things about these kit planes is the chance to fly something at least similar to icons of aviation for a fraction of the price. You also have the peace of mind knowing that if you have to land gear-up or off airport you aren't risking damaging a ~$4-6 million piece of aviation history.

Fun fact, P-51 did not start out as the thoroughbred that it is remember as. First few variants had an Alison which was a good engine but had it's draw back. It was getting the RR Merlin engine that gave the p-51 the mussel to be the fighter of legend. The E variant is probably my favorite.

I love these replicas but I wish they had made them a little bigger. I know in terms of weight and cost and landing speed there are advantages to the smaller size, but if it were 90% scale I think most people wouldn't notice it, but these 75% scale planes just look too small in relation to the pilot. Actually with advanced composites you could probably build a full scale replica and still keep the weight and landing speed down, but you would need a bigger engine, and Rolls Royce Merlins are not that easy to come by these days. Composites wouldn't be authentic to WWII materials but if you molded the rivets in and painted it metallic silver you would probably have to touch it to know the difference.

A full size Mustang is larger than the Spitfire or Me109; and a 3/4 scale Mustang is comparable in size to the Spitfire and Me109. From what I've seen from Titan' information, they are developing a full size Mustang replica, with a V12 engine. Bigger aircraft, bigger price, operating costs along with that too. It will be nice for those that can afford it.

It's a little short. (length) Anyone who's around aviation knows what this is. If you want to see a ready good replica look around and see if you can find a Stewart 51. With a v8. Now that's a true remake. Plus the wings here are not elliptical.
@harleywylie2909
@harleywylie2909 4 года назад
The P-51 didn't have elliptical wings, that was the British Spitfire. But the P-51 did have laminar flow wings though, that added to its speed. Stewart 51 kits are no longer available, the company has had financial difficulties and changed hands more than once, and seems to be in legal limbo now. The benefit of a company like Titan is the T-51 is not the only aircraft they produce so they have production capabilities and business capacity that other kit manufacturers don't have; one builder has used a LS3 V-8 to power their T-51. Titan has added the T-51B and are also building a full size T-51 as well, with a V-12 engine. Price? Unknown, but it will cost a lot more than the T-51, take longer to build, and cost more for fuel, maintenance etc.; but build/maintenance costs probably still a lot less than a real P-51.
@garrygballard8914
@garrygballard8914 4 года назад
@@harleywylie2909 you should take a closer look. The p51 wings are elliptical like the Spitfire but not rounded on the end. I know this well because I built a 51 replica kit in the late 80's called 5151. The Stewart 51 kits are now owned by a company in Alabama and are gearing up to produce the kit again. It's a 70% copy of the original. I some what knew the Stewart's when they were in Vero Beach. He was a better engineer than a business man.

@@garrygballard8914 ; The p-51 has a semi-tapered wing. The P-47 Thunderbolt used a version of an elliptical wing, but the P-51 didn't. The 1st photo in this link shows the Spitfire and Mustang flying side by side and shows the contract between the two different wing types - airspacemag.com/flight-today/perfect-airplane-wing-180971225/ ; it's good to hear the S-51 will go into production again. Modern automotive engines combine small size, light weight and potentially outrageous power. A Honda 4 cylinder can readily produce 600+ reliable horsepower while an all aluminum v8 could easily produce well over 1000 horsepower. There are Loads of PARTS, but the Engines themselves are rarer and rarer every year, in the 60's they were used for racing boats, and at the time Cheap, so they'd blow them up, and just slap another in, and just no Modern equivalent.

I recall hearing that Titan was actually working on a full or close to full scale replica. As with everything it's limited by cost and demand. To the people talking about powerplants, a full scale wouldn't necessarily need the same engine as the original because you wouldn't need 52" of manifold pressure at 30,000' also you aren't dragging 6 AN/M2 guns, their ammo plus 480 gallons of fuel. So realistically a V-8, V-10, or V-12 that could produce in the neighborhood of 1000 to 1100 horsepower should be adequate

Not truely the case, sadly. PacificWrecks.com is a good resource to find the lost B17s of the pacific theatre. Sorry to break your hopes up.

Tim Barnett No they didn’t lose one, they lost MANY: “The Germans shot down 36 [B-17] aircraft with the loss of 200 men, and coupled with a raid earlier in the day against Regensburg, a total of 60 B-17s was lost that day. A second attempt on Schweinfurt on 14 October 1943 later came to be known as "Black Thursday".” Google it.

However, the British Mosquito bomber variant flew two sorties a day, Cost far less to build, required only two engines and two crew and suffered hardly any losses - yet had a comparable bomb load..... the B-17 was a flying white elephant, and a bad idea made manifest.

@@russellhawkins366 Actually, the B17 was an okay idea, first flown in 1935. The Mosquito was just a vastly superior idea, first flown in 1940.

Another example of error in this video. That stencil is from a real P-51 and is just there to look cool. Has nothing to do with the Titan. When I flew with Bill in Camel Smoker I'm sure the two of us weighed 400

Problem with the p-51 mustang is that it can not turn well at all, personally I’d be in a spitfire or hurricane just because of maneuverability

Your video just isn’t really saying much , a true p51 is 4-4.5 million guy, your not really giving much information,which leads me to say your not really very informed about it although I do appreciate your attempt, you could’ve went into what type of engine it had a little bit of history on it why the P 51 had to be born the engine that it initially had and how the British were the ones that truly push the Americans to put a better engine in the P 51 and the P 51D is actually the best P 51 ever built..

The Tuskegee Airmen were a segregated unit of all-black fighter pilots in WWII. Back then, blacks were considered inferior to whites hence were not allowed to serve in the same units as whites. The only reason why the government created an all-black fighter unit was because they needed all the pilots they can get to fight in that war. Today, the trend against racial discrimination is so strong that the Air Force must jump on the bandwagon and finally recognize these heroes. But for 60 years, the Tuskegee Airmen were rarely mentioned, much less praised. Today, another racial group is being ignored by the U.S. Air Force: Asian-American Officers. Although Asians are not segregated, the promotion rate of LINE Asian Officers are less than any other race, including blacks. For those who never served in the military, Line Officers are those who could take Command of troops into combat. That excludes Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Clergymen, and Lawyers. This is why you see Asian Colonels who are Doctors but not Commanders because the Air Force doesn't want Asians taking command of the Service (i.e. white boys don't want to be controlled). During my 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, I've never seen a Line Asian Officer being promoted beyond the rank of Major. In contrast, the U.S. Army has Asian generals who are Line Officers. Yet, the Air Force is supposedly a more cutting-edge Service. That is the ugly truth of your Air Force.
