Northstar is best star. Twitch: / frothyomen Twitter: / frothyomen If there's music in this video, it's probably released on the Chillhop Records label.
Years later revisiting the game with the surge in popularity, and man this is just as helpful now as it was back then. Hope you're doing well nowadays man.
@@speedlimitviolationspecialistnuke eject can be used effectively in some situations because tether traps lock an enemy titan then the nuke eject radius will still hit the enemy even if they shoot the tether
@@DrEliXD again, its a meme build. no one that actually wants to win picks double tether and nuke when turbo engine and viper thrusters are the best combo by a mile
I think making enemies glow red has some hidden utility with Counter-Ready. Drop a smoke and start blasting enemy Titans through it with accuracy and watch the hackusations fly.
piercing shot had another handy ability with it where it allows you to shoot through ally titans as well. so if a region is up front soaking damage but blocking the lane, you can fire your shots through them without having to float above them. makes for some disgusting combo damage too.
1. Deal a ton of damage 2. Tether and trap 3. (a) Use your core and let justice rain from above 3. (b) Nuclear eject and get a nice Titan kill, and a high chance of getting another Titan. 4. REPEAT! I once gotten 4 Northstars in a row with this tactic.
yes, when you compare Northstar's core to the other titans it's underpowered. I think he was saying that the other cores are overpowered and ideally should only do as much damage as Northstar for a better balance overall.
It doesn't do less damage though. You're just missing shots, it's HARDER to use. I regularly do more damage with Flight Core than I do with Laser Core because I'm WAAAAY more mobile while using it so people have a hard time escaping.
Gen 10 northstar here, I honestly prefer threat optics to all other kits as if your an accurate shot it makes you the most effective pilot hunter in the game, you can easily see anyone anywhere on the map, your high mobility allows you to easily dodge rockets and chase pilots, your hover even lets you hunt people on rooftops, your cluster can lock down doors and eg round corners and you have a super accurate weapon viable at any range. Being able to spot anyone anywhere no matter how small and unclear is invaluable.
Frothy you should mention combining Tether trap and firing the upgraded cluster missile directly at the trap when an enemy is stuck in the trap. It does a lot of damage and uses the full damage potential of the cluster missiles.
@@irondragonfruit1121 Yes you can. You may be thinking about twin traps (which I run) and even then, using cluster missiles on someone who is double teathered is a good strat. I run double smokes so I can double teather an enemy and either dash in to drop electric smoke and then cluster missile or cluster missile and drop smoke to cover my retreat.
Im a north star main, and the majority of this I’ve learned to do on my own, so you know it’s good advice when it’s peer reviewed lol. Also that hover peek is killer! Ima yoink that one from ya 😂
I would argue that twin tether traps are also good. Being able to trap 2 Titans into a nuke, or making it twice as difficult for a Titan to escape your nuke, is very effective in many situations.
Another use for twin tether traps is if you are a player that tends to get his/her titan very early. Tether traps don't expire. This means that if you get your titan before everyone else and just start dumping tethers all over the map the enemy team will grind to a halt when they finally get their titans. its not a huge deal, but it is a fantastic way to piss off the other team when every five seconds they get tethered XD.
Nope lol. I was shocked too. They can be destroyed but they don't have a time limit. If you dont expect to "Need" them before the cooldown ends just spam them onto the map. I almost always am "First to Fall" so i just dump tethers everywhere until enemy titans start getting called down. Then the next couple minutes of the match I just hear the sounds of things being tethered over and over XD.
Well from my experience they don't expire until a certain number is placed, but that's just from noticing as I go. Not totally certain if I'm right but it seems like so many of my traps just magically disappear when I place more.
Hmm. It COULD just be that people are seeing them and destroying them, or maybe they are firing off and you're just not noticing them getting consumed. I may have to hop into a private match and test that sometime.
Great video, I learned a few things. A couple things I wanted to add though; Hover is a very underrated ability, IMO. Many people misuse it, like popping it when there is no vertical cover to dance around, but when used correctly it's incredibly useful. When it comes to facing a Ronin, Hover is invaluable. Assuming the Ronin's first move on you is going to be the Arc Wave, once you're familiar with Arc Wave's effective distance you can time your Hover to avoid it completely, drop a trap, and buy yourself some time to gain a little separation (Ronin's phase shift will nullify the trap, however). Also (at the risk of stating the obvious to a player of your caliber), using Hover to provide support fire over the shoulders of your fellow titans is essential in tight spaces when you haven't equipped Piercing Rounds. And Lastly, Northstar pairs very well with the Extra Battery boost. Not so much that it adds 25% to your core charge (for the reasons you've already stated in the video), but rather for when you might have to call your titan down in a pinch when there aren't already any other friendly titans to soak up some damage for you. No complaints, just some things that might be worth adding. Great video, I subbed. keep them coming.
In my opinion northstar is the second best anti infantry titan (papa warcrimes is first) because cluster missiles especially enhanced payload is great for just shooting in a door way you saw a pilot walk into and forgetting sure ronin has the shotgun but like all titans it need to see into the doorway northstar just has to for cluster missile and go find some titans
Hey, I've never been interested in piloting northstar until watching this video and seeing how it can be used, so thank you for piquing my interest in a new way to play
Northstar is my queen. Definitely needs a buff though. I personally feel like Particle Wall would make more sense as Northstar's defense option. Give Tone the Tether Traps. She needs to suck more.
But Particle Wall does nothing for VTOL and Flight Core. You want kits that work together, and the wall is completely useless for two abilities. Tether freezes enemies in place, making them much easier targets for both VTOL and Flight Core. It's also your only method of escaping CQC, because Northstar has very little hope of survival at close range. Her biggest threat is someone else engaging at close range, and Particle Wall is completely useless for that as well.
Ceaseless Greed i would like it if northstar had the brute loadout from the campaign as an alternate loadout.the difference is that brute has the quad rocket, and vortex shield.that would be pretty cool.
If you get into your titan inside the dome shield and don't move at all you get the full duration of the dome shield, so the "tether nuke eject" by a dome shield won't work if they are paying attention. I thought it was possible to break the tether anyway? I swear if I start seeing a bunch of Northstars now running nuke eject and running face first into the enemy I'm holding you accountable Frothy...
You can't blame Frothy for that lol. I've been running that gimmick since day 1. It was the first thing everyone thought of when they saw the tether traps during the Northstar reveal XD.
Nope, Titans in a dome shield are invincible. You can even go so far as to call another Titan down on top of one and neither will die. The first person to get into the Titan and move it or the first Titan to move on it's own after both shields wear off will die.
MadMattDog don't quote me on this but I'm almost certain (like 99.9%) the dome shield wears off 1sec after you enter your titan. you can as a pilot stand inside it until it's about to wear off but as soon as you climb in and the titan stands the shield goes down because "controls switched to pilot" Yada Yada. the tether trap is almost useless anyways whenever I'm under. 5bars of health i find the nearest titan in its dome circle around to its back whichever side will lead to the pilot boosting towards a wall for maximum effect then i wait for the pilot to get in count to 5 (that's how long it takes to climb in 3 if they phase in) then go nuclear. I've gotten at least 500 titans that way off their spawn only titan you can't body block is ronin. oh and tether traps are useless against a ronin i just phase out of them.
Glad to see your feedback on this. I usually do really well with Northatar but I wanted to see what kinds of advanced tips you are recommending. Thanks for the video!
Fun fact about using your flight core, after u do a normal hover and start falling, activate your core to fly even higher, the best part about it is that if you have viper thrusters you can fly above your enemy and making it near impossible for them to hit you above while you rain hell on them. And to run away just dash mid air when you fall, u gain alot of speed mid air and you can escape easily.
I've been looking for a reason to try out Northstar, and this video might just be the reason. I honestly thought it was the weakest of all the titans, but this has made me reconsider that and see its many strengths. Thank you Frothy!
I think Northstar should have a defense ability to turn invisible while hovering, not full invisibility but just 80% so her sniper like playstyle could work
11:43 Thank god someone actually agrees with me on this. It feels so insanely cheap to face an enemy that charged their core from a previous 1v1 and just have them vomit into your face, taking away 75% of your health with little to no counterplay.
I'm a Gen 7 Northstar and didn't use any other Titans. i consider myself as a pretty good Northstar Pilot, but the one thing I didn't know about this Titan his the last thing you mentioned you've discovered during the making of this video :p this is very neat and its VERY effective! Awesome video!
Great guide as always, just one note. I actually found the Titan kit that high lights enemies really useful when you are sitting way back sniping. It highlights Titans and pilots that are covered by smoke and it's alot easier to pick off pilots in crowds and chaos. Also for some reason it makes it easier to snipe pilots out of the air especially when they are ejecting. This Titan is the best in big open battlefields with a bit of cover as you can pop out and then hover over ur cover to keep the enemy guessing while popping off shots. It's also almost completely useless in dense city like maps as it Is in disadvantage to any Titan that's even a bit better at fighting up close (aka: all of them).
Another great video Frothy with solid advice. I've genned both my Tone and Ion to 11 and have only just started using Northstar, so have been looking for ways to play her. Only thing I don't like is she's the only Titan without some sort of shield counter measure. Though now watching your video I can see you use the environment a lot so I will try. Keep up the great work
Another note for Piercing Shot is that it lets you shoot through allied titans. Very helpful when you're fighting in tight quarters in Last Titan Standing because of how your allies tend to move around and can suddenly block your shot right as you let it go.
As someone who has spent much more time on northstar i'd like to say a few things. For one i'm glad others are seeing the value in viper thrusters. I've used them since launch before they effected your VTOL. You are the first person i've seen talk about using her dashes after hover. it's part of what makes her so scary in the right hands. Personally i've never thought of using the strafe mid hover and then dashing back into cover when falling. Going to use that now. I don't like the idea of you recommending nuke eject. in fact I would recommend over core. it seems to be the only titan (in my experiences) that gets 30% of the build meter back after a core use. test it in private matches. Flight core was trashed on because salvo core specifically does everything flight core is attempting but better in every way. It's better now that they buffed flight core. but it seems odd that you'd ask a question you already had an answer to. Also turbo dash isn't as good here since on stryder class titans it takes longer to recharge. also it's niche but piercing shot lets you shoot through friendlies. I still go with viper thrusters overall since it's a mobility boost and northstar uses mobility to live.
Dude you and me are the same. I can’t bring myself to remove overcore and viper thrusters from my northstar. I have even gotten skilled enough that I now use northstar as an aggressive offense(close-mid range) titan, rather than defensive offense(mid-long range) titan. Plus with overcore I can usually get anywhere from 3-5 flight cores in one life. I’d argue that that combo is borderline op. I hated on northstar in the beginning of the game but once I gave her a chance and saw what she could do, she became my favorite one to use. With ronin being my second.
Dude that 3rd dash is essential to me anytime a titan is shooting me at medium range i just run away to a teammate or a position where i can hurt them and minimize the ammount of damage they are doing to me
In frontier defence northstar is really useful. In between rounds you can place traps everywhere and they actually explode when used, it’s effective against the nuke legions and allows you to slow down and deal damage when in a completely different area. And the cluster missile also has increased effectiveness in frontier defence because of the titans that gather up in the same space.
Another tactic that could be used with Counter Ready is combining it with tether traps, since you could release electric smoke when you're near tethered titans so it can harm them. Like another person said, you can also combine it with cluster missile as well. Anyway, Northstar is my best and favorite titan to use, and this was neat to watch. That trick with shooting a cluster missile at a wall to kill rodeoing pilots was nice, and I think I even tried it a few times.
The enhanced targeting is awesome when used with electric smoke, as it allows you to see through it. That way, enemy titans can't see you, but you can see them.
I have to say something about the cluster missile and Northstar's Sniper. A fully charged sniper headshot can stagger other titans allowing you to shoot a cluster missile immediately afterwords to get a direct hit and full damage from the cluster missile. Also thank you for making a fair Northstar review. Truly.
Having lots of fun with Viper Thrusters. Thank you for the guide, helped a ton when i started using her! Edit: I made it to G11 and Aegis rank 24 with her! Very glad i watched this guide, it helped sooo much while leveling! A trick i learned is if you’re being swarmed with enemies (A.I or player) drop tethers, VTOL away from them, and fire/cluster depending on terrain.
thx, me and my friends just started playing again, and for the life of us we dont remember why we ever stopped playing....anyway im usually a tone player, but just so happens northstar has gotten my attention hard, so this vid was great thanks!
I've been waiting for this. northstar is my favorite and hoping to get some good tips, but I really like using the double smoke red enemy thing (forgot the name that quick ). it's not great but does help when you know were you are in your's or an enemies smoke cloud.
Thanks for the tips on Northstar she is my favorite titan and the tricks you showed for peeking were nice but I wanted to say that extra dash could be useful if you have enhanced payload equipped because it gives you more mobility like viper thrusters would also I wanted to know what you thought of a northstar titan kit that gave you 2 cluster missile charges like ronin has with arc waves? love the vids btw
Finaly, a Northstar guide worth watching. I main northstar and I've picked up a tip or two from here. I run extra dash with the infrared sights, though I may try out that nuclear ejection... idk though because it makes you WANT to eject, and I sometimes play a whole mach on half a doomed titan's health bar... I think I'll try out the nehanced thrusters (never tried it) and maybe the cluster buff wich I never used due to liking the infrared
I tried out all the other stuff like overcore and viper thrusters and enhanced payload.... but I found them all lacking. I was always missing a boost and having enhanced sights just gives you an edge on the battlefield that people dont expect you to have, it realy rases you pilot kills. Their not bad though, you can realy tell teh diference using viper thrusters and teh enhanced payload is big buff to it, but I prefer sights
FrothyOmen awesome man thanks for the reply. I have the scorch mastered and I do a good job with the others. I manage to use each titan in it's own element but these definitely show me things I didn't know.
It'd be nice to have the option to cancel your hover when you take your shot or at the press of a button...way to easy of a target when hovering in the sky which I find a weakness unless your way back. The core is also way to weak in my opinion. Awesome video though..
just one quick thing to remember, that with tether traps, they make an audible noise from any where on the map only to you. so what i love to do is put a tether on the flank and as soon as i hear it i know to turn around removing the element of surprise from the opponent(s) that are flanking. also the rail gun suffer little to no damage mitigation from ronin's sword block and most ronin's love to use phase dash often, using a tether trap is a great way to almost garenting 2 free shots on the ronin
I'm not sure if you covered this one but here it is. If you have normal Titanfall on and not warpfall, if you get in your Titan as soon as it lands and you don't move in it you can actually charge up a full shot in the dome shield.
Another way to play Northstar is with double tether and double smoke. Especially good if flanking the enemy team alone. Having two smokes and two tethers allows her to be a bit more aggressive in both positioning and holding her own when facing multiple Titans alone. Running this load out bolsters both her defensive and offensive power.
thanks for this video i completely dropped northstar but after watching this video i picked her back up and started wrecking pilots, and the nuke cheese is just funny to pull off
What’s a REALLY dope trick on northstar is if you have your core up, activate hover, wait till right before you hit the ground, pop your core and you SOAR into the air above any scorch flame shield, ronin arcwave any ability that can take advantage of your vulnerability
love the streams and vids, frothy. I main NS and think that highlighting the enimies can be viable if you use a lot of smoke. I love to tether then drop smoke on them and light'em up. Besides that gimmick I run viper thrusters.
I like to use counter ready and threat optics to attack enemies through my own smoke, as well as damaging and disorienting titans pushing my position. I've had fairly good success although it's ineffective against tone.
It might be worth mentioning that you can switch magnification while aiming by pressing shift. It really messes with my goosing potential tho when I forget that it's on. I recommend switching to unzoomed mode when shooting pilots, since the bullet speed feels more on par with that of tone's (if you are used to it)
I use optic scope and additional boost and do something good power plays, and optic scope is so useful when you drop a smoke for cover or when the enemy drops a smoke. And another plus to the optic scope is I can pilots anywhere especially when they peek. Ig another another plus is the critical shots are easier ta see and get along with getting tricky shots through windows, corners, and crevasses, along with that shooting an enemy Titans foot, leg or even the peak of their head still does great damage, and optic and help show where the enemy is in the small windows. Like a an enemy Titans behind a building thinking their safe but little do the know you have optic eye and can see their feet or leg, and boom ya knocked chunks of health off. It's a really good kit people should use because it provides so many good opportunities
Just as an after thought, in my experience (I'm currently Gen 5 with Northstar) if your facing multiple Titans alone or in LTS, your goal isn't going to be kill them, and the reality is that your probably won't except for a few occasions or maps where you're in the right place at the right time because you lack defensive options. You want to damage each Titian as much as possible before you're forced to eject or die. With your rail gun, utilizing both zoom options, and all your abilities, you have a high potential for damaging Titans from relative distance and safety, so try to accomplish as much as you can from afar before just diving in and nuking everyone. Viper Thrusters comes in handy here and allows you to use the speed it grants for greater evasion purposes and getting to some places with ease (i.e. The ridges on Drydock). Also, choices regarding the distance at which you engage is nearly as crucial as Ions Energy Pool and will help you keep the fight going for as long as possible. Frothy's previous review of Northstar talks a little more about placement if you want more tips. Anyways, fantastic tips on the Nuking thing, and the tricks on peeking really helped. Great video as always Frothy!
interesting suggestions. I will probably go back to NorthStar or Ion once I am done regenerating the rest of them. I really like the speed and punch NorthStar offers, and it makes Tones regret posting shields. I like having the third dash just because I push a little too much, and I wind up getting myself against multiple titans and pilots simultaneously. It allows me to run away fast, lol. I have been using nuclear ejection on Ronin, but I might take that away and put it on Northstar. I have been on the receiving end of that diabolical act before, but they actually pretended to run away... They trapped me with the cable mine and took off. I tried to catch up and spend all of my dashes and then before I could execute them they started the nuclear ejection and killed me, or took out my titan. I have a lot of situations where I had to react to nuclear ejection. I'll consider the viper thrusters. I tend to use the cluster missile, and that respective upgrade tends to work well for me, but my play style has changed drastically since I have been regenerating the other titans... smh.
Ok, as a G10 Northstar, I feel like I have a leg to stand on to add some extra tips 1. Tether traps take about a second or so to prime, so don't just drop them in front of a rushing ronin 2. Over penetrating shot makes it so you can shoot through teammates, a very useful tactic while in team fights 3. Tether traps can be destroyed by your own cluster missile so when trapping enemies space the missile from the tether 4. Northstar in general is very powerful at managing one or two sightlines. You must rely on your team mates in LTS to assist in flankers. 5. Don't be afraid to take the shot you might miss. Especially Northstar vs. Northstar, being the first to land a hit is imperative to your success. Taking fully charged potshots with little delay is very good for maximizing DPS 6. Map knowledge of common chokes and "cheesy" sightlines are very useful for getting DPs on Titans. Take the time to learn as many sightlines as possible. 7. Against close range titans, particularly ronin, if you're facing an aggressive team, electric smoke has more value as a Titan deterrent over cluster missiles. Use your missiles to prevent rodoes as your first choice rather than second in that situation 8. Northstar is masterful at distracting and annoying Tones. One fully charged shot, plus three ticks on a second shot eliminates any particle wall. Assist your team in the takedown of this annoying ass Titan. 9. Flight core is the singular core that can help prevent you from being terminated. If you're doomed, inexperienced enemies often go for an execution. Take them by surprise by flying over them and raining justice from above 10. As a Titan with a strong tool for gaining views of the map (VTOL Hover) and general back positioning, in a team with chats, take up shot calling to inform team mates about flankers going your route, amounts of titans, etc.
I will always use the advanced optics kit because the red highlight on pilots is G O D L Y for finding cheeku little pilots trying to peak you up high. It's also crazy good when your using smoke and a pilot jumps off of you, you can shoot them straight through it. Another thing it's good for is when a pilot ejects it's much easier to find them and shoot them straight out of the sky
Excellent guide. Just one note though. Northstar bullets can pass through friendly Titans (You can use them as shield but still helping them damaging enemies).
the tether traps are good for putting down on a corner then when you get pushed by a titan hit them with a cluster missile, most people just spam there boost trying to get away and if someone does shoot or melee it they have to hit two of them holding them up in the cluster a bit longer, its a viable tactic on titans in there dome shield as well if you don't want to doom your titan for the nuclear ejaculation
There’s this strategy where you find enemy titans in there domesheild, drop down your tether trap, nuke eject, call your Titan down, find another enemy in there domesheild, repeat. It’s what I call northstar madness, northstar insanity, or northstar suicide/kamikaze. Note, I would recommend finding an area where a lot of enemy titans are in there domesheild. This tactic works great in frontier defense, though you need to be quick as the AI takes a few seconds to get out of there domesheild.
I think the trap and cluster actually makes sense. Set the trap (or drop it on a titan), and shoot your cluster at the trapped Titan. Works well against Scorch/Legion.
Threat Optics is pretty much a personal preference thing. Combined with electric smoke you have an instant advantage if someone notices you. This way you don’t have to hide around corners as much. Considering that cluster missile is pretty much your anti pilot ability anyway, it’s safe to use electric smoke and peer through it, effectively turning you into glaz from rainbow six. But like most others I use viper thrusters.
Great video as always. Northstar can be a lot of fun and is a MASSIVE boost to teammates Titans. Get your self a Scorch or Legion to act as a blocker and watch the opposite teams Titans run. Just keep an eye out for Ronin, he will F you up!
fun fact. piercing shot can shoot through friendly titans. so you can use your teams tanky titans as a sort of "meat" shield, and shoot through them to damage the enemy.
I do like the enemies glow perk combined with more smoke for extra cover. IMO the tether and nuke eject is (not difficult but) tedious in a way that there are specific hoops I need to jump through in order to pull it off successfully. If I'm playing with a team I can communicate with, I'll actually pick piercing shot. This is because my buddies can stand in front of me tanking damage and my (piercing) shot will actually go through my allies without damaging them allowing me to continue contributing in titan engagements. Not the best Loadout as it doesn't always go to plan but I thought it might be worth mentioning in case some people didn't know it was possible.
Northstar pilot here and I LOVE the video but I have a quick note to add! I agree with pretty much all the kit choices (Northstar is easily the single worst Titan for Assault Chip) but I'll note that Piercing Shot actually fires not just through enemy titans, but also friendly titans. In big titan fights when things start getting crowded in lanes, I've found it's basically invaluable. There's definitely some overlap between Piercing Shot and Enhanced Payload's utility in the "doing damage in spite of your friends" department, but Piercing Shot is the far more dependable kit for making sure you're not pounding fully-charged shots into your friend's back and, instead, into that enemy pilot's cockpit. I absolutely used to swear by EP, but since switching to PS, I've taken a much more "support sniper" attitude in my play with Northstar and maintained much higher uptimes with her on the ground. It's basically the opposite playstyle encouraged by Nuclear Core. For me, I'd put Piercing Shot and Enhanced Payload basically at parity. In pro-level play, PS probably stays pretty mid-tier, but when you're playing in casual lobbies that tend to have clustered scrums for titan fights, PS is a superstar every Northstar pilot should try for themselves! But yeah, fantastic guide and it's always good seeing love for my underrated, 80-ton robot wife!
a strategy I found great for flight core was to use viper thrusters and over core. I'd tether and then start to use my core. you can bring a full health atlas chassis titan down reliably.
As always, I really enjoyed this video! Thanks! :) The only comment I have is that I feel the best nuclear ejection Titan is the Ronin, especially if paired with the kit released in the 1st patch. The other day, on crash site, and using that Titan combination I did 318 points in attrition with 48 pilot kills in a full server... Of course that my experience comes from public servers and yours probably comes from more competitive gaming, but just wanted to leave this input! ;) Keep the good work!
