Titanfall 2 Titan Guide: Mastering Ronin 

It's that time of the year where i go back and watch all of frothies Titan guides for whatever reason

To any new players just coming by this guide, the Turbo Engine bug where the dashes would regen slower has been patched. Turbo Engine now regens at the same speed as regular

This is by far the most informative titan video I have ever seen. I had NO idea about 70% of this.

Ronin is my most played Titan, and one reason I love him is because of how he ruins Tone. Arc Wave destroys Tone's Particle Wall, Phase Dash removes Tone's Tracking Rockets lock-on, and Tones aren't that powerful in CQC Titan battles, so Ronin is able to constantly dodge Tone's attacks, and strike back with much more power.

One thing I didn't note -- It's very important to use terminations to your advantage, and to know when to avoid them. If you're going hard on a group of Titans, here's the idea: If they're looking at you and focusing you, consider performing a termination to become invincible temporarily and give your phase dash a chance to recharge for free. If they aren't looking at you, consider avoiding the termination so you aren't locked into the animation -- continue damaging and killing targets normally!

Updates from the future: If you crouch at the exact same time as you sword block, the sword block comes out almost TWICE AS FAST. This makes it EVEN BETTER! After the first half of your arc wave, you can phase dash to make the second half safe. You can use phase dash to prevent the damage from pilot rodeos as they pull out a battery. If you dash, then immediately phase dash (almost at the same time), your phasedash will go twice as far. During sword core, if you press attack while in the middle of any other animation (for example, you click melee while in the middle of a previous swing), your swing will COMPLETELY WHIFF. Wait until your previous attack/arc wave/sword block finishes before using melee again! For more tips, I added them to the wiki, so look there :)

I thought I was an already good Ronin pilot. with that little rodeo trick, I smell gg's all around.

Ronin always distracts me. Even when theirs multiple Titans and he isn't even at close range, it's just the fact that I know that if that ronin gets close he'll kill me in seconds that makes me focus him down

So when people say Legion is OP, remember this video. I LOVE playing Legion, but every time I see Ronin, it's always an "oh, crap" moment.

I think it should also be noted that Ronin's mitigation skill is the only one that doesn't immediately get turned off when its being hit by a core ability.

Played frontier defense for the first time today using your tips. Holy cow, your tips saved my ronin so many times.

He communicates so eloquently, no one asks questions. He kills with such swiftness, enemies die before he hits MOUSE1. He is so credential'ed, even a Fortune 50 company greater than EA looked at him. He once killed a Titan just by looking at it. He is... The most interesting Pilot in the world.

Not that this matters at all, but the difficulty stars on the titans are so wrong. In reality, Ion and Tone are easy to master, Legion and Northstar are average, and Ronin and Scorch are hard.

Being as I decided to focus on playing Scorch for now, I _love_ seeing Ronins. They just like to run right into my handheld blast furnace like good little badguys who die on command.

That phaseshift trick is pretty neat! i have been having fun playing Ronin, since i learned this tip from you FrothyOmen. Also the Sword block helped me stay alive more, its really valuable lesson.

So, basically be an annoying distraction and try to get as much attention as possible and then let your friends to do the dirty work . You know, for a samurai, Ronin has very little honor.

If a titan has a sliver of health before they’re doomed, you can arc wave, dash, and melee to get an unreactable execution.

I just want to say a sincere thank you. I loved ronin the moment he was revealed in the trailer. When I'd play I would build pure damage with the extra sword projectile, but I died so much. This video made me realize how crucial blocking and building core is, and now I die less, get more kills, help the team win, and often get mvp. Thank you again

What I really like about your videos is that they are always straight to the point condensed with useful information. The thing I dislike the most is when somebody makes a two minute intro about their favorite holiday activity every single video before getting to the actual content.

what i do is add an extra dash and an extra arc wave in addition to a battery boost for a shield. i dance around them shooting my shotgun, dropping smoke and stunning them in addition to my phase dash which if im super outnumbered i phase out then dash away. but i definitely like your loadout and think ill try!

Ronin Changes! Ok, they're not official, just my recommendations. The point of the core abilities is to make you very lethal for the duration of the core. I believe all the cores serve their purpose well, except for the fundamental flaw that Sword Core has. While the damage of the core is acceptable, the doom state interactions are terrible. A swing from sword core on a doomed titan will not kill. That is a downgrade from the normal melee! It disables executions and requires another swing, literally doubling your time to kill on doomed titans. Sword Core hinges on its ability to kill doomed titans. Ronin is tied for the lowest base health alongside Northstar, therefore any extra damage he takes while trying to do the second, finishing swing is infinitely more detrimental to Ronin. This fundamental flaw also ruins the point of the Highlander perk in many cases. The perk, which allows for longer duration from titan kills, is very powerful, except that many people will steal kills from you during Sword Core. Because it leaves a tiny bit of health, ANY form of damage will steal the kill from you. If Highlander got buffed to give the duration on assists, all would be well, aside from the fact that Sword Core is doing a little too small of damage. TLDR: Let Sword Core one hit kill doomed titans; allow Highlander buff on assists.

I used to only use Legion as my titan and got bored with him bc i played with him so much. After using Ronin for a few matches and getting frustrated bc I wasnt using him right I checked out this video and its made me so much better at Ronin. I use sword block mostly there are many pilots attacking me or facing with a Tone or legion, Yes Ronin is my favorite titan but i rarely counter enemy Titans directly, I always flank to use all of his potential and deal massive damage, especially from behind a bunch of Titans, shock wave is very useful to slow northstars and other 2 dashes titans, and it can eliminate Tone and legion shield, making them panic and help your teammates. I have to admit that now i just realize the anti-battery stolen by phase dashing although my ronin is G11, good tip, good tip!

I hate it when people pick Ronin in last Titan standing just because he looks cool and instantly die. It's especially annoying because I basically only play Ronin and get top of the scoreboard 90% of the time. Even from an experienced Ronin this video was extremely informative and has helped me pretty greatly. I didn't realize how good sword block was until I saw this video! Keep up the great work!

Highlander in frontier defense is godly

Really well done! I didn't know a lot of this. I would like to add though, as something I've learned, which is really helpful when you are attempting to deal with a high-health low-speed titan (Scorch especially) is that you can reload while phase dashing, which can give you brief invincibility plus a quick few extra shots.

If a Ronin's still alive after 30 seconds, RUN.

With Ronin, I always like to remain in a sort of "gureilla tactic" mode, the idea that a very fast and durable target can come out of nowhere tends to make players play a bit worse, like just inducing a bit of paranoia especially for Tones and Northstars can be just enough to catch them off guard, like let them catch a glimpse of you, maybe because you put a couple shots into them, then vanish as best you can, like every time you attack you may not be dealing a mountain of damage, but those little cuts add up, especially if the enemy has more Titans then your team does, if they are worrying and looking for you, then they aren't focusing on other things, and I think Ronin is really good at creating and abusing those divided attention situations.

"Ronin is the most difficult to play optimally." ...it IS?!

I love Ronin, he really does have a great kit, there were 2 times that i went against 3 titans and absolutely obliterated them, you gotta have a good strategy tho, like ronin says, plan and stay focused

I was on top of a Ally Titan, jumped off, shot a incoming pilot with the mastiff and my ronin caught me. It was really epic and this explanation sounded better in my head

"Puny human reaction time" Dude, I wish! Any pvp game I play, everyone has fucking god-like reaction time. When I see an enemy, first I have to process if that is a player or just a background object I mistook for a player. Then I have to see if they are friend or foe. Aaand finally I need to aim at them and shoot. So it takes approximately 1 second before I decide to pull the trigger. Which by that time, I'm usually dead. They see 1 pixel of me, and they already know that I'm an enemy, what character I'm playing, what my stats are, my favourite dish is and where I live. Why can't there be servers for inhuman-godlike-superplayers and servers for normal, puny, filthy casuals like me?

This is coming from someone who has been playing as a Legion for 95% of the time I've had the game. The way you describe how to play Ronin has actually made me interested in playing it. Whenever I play a game and see a Ronin the first thing that pops into my head is "nuke ejecting piece of shit." Now after watching this I'm gonna have to try this out. It sounds actually pretty fun, and rewarding. PS: If you are one of the banzai rushing nuke ejecting Ronins, you are the reason people hate and disrespect the Ronin.

3 extra tips: Highlander is great on Frontier Defense, IF you're below hard mode Nuke Eject is amazing on Frontier Defense where there are countless Titans clumped up (can be coupled with Phase Reflex, but it's usually not needed as you already have sword block, phase dash, or an arc wave or two to stun them) Nuke Eject is a yes if you manage to corner an enemy Titan, though this is rare, even more rare that you'd be in the doomed state in this situation as well

So Block, block and more block? Lol Awesome video...I like using Ronin by going in hitting some damage and getting back out and bait the enemy to come towards me. Gonna give your recommendations a good go though I am definitely not blocking enough by the sounds of it

That's what I kept saying about Sword Block. It will be your best friend playing as Ronin. Majority of the people (not everyone though especially on Reddit) saying Sword Block is useless because it minimizes your movement. Sword Block is the _only_ thing that keeps your titan alive _longer_.

This guide is great. A couple of things have changed since it came out, however. 1) Turbo engine now has the same cooldown on dashes as standard. No extra cooldown anymore, this also applies to Northstar. 2) Nuclear ejection no longer guarantees a new Titan upon killing enemy Titans. These are small changes, but it may be important to know. :-)
