did you know that Titanic was in length equal to 3 football fields, width 1 football field and equal to 17 stories high including the tall smoke stacks. back then that must've been Gigantic by their standards. going on the Maiden Voyage must've been very exciting no matter what Class you belonged to. just some general knowledge. i really like that you have added Laura, she is a breadth of fresh air. 🤩🥰😇

It's actually one of the reasons rich people become so reclused and isolated from the general public. They feel like people just hate them for being rich, thus they distance themselves more - and the split between rich and poor widens, socially and literally.

Couple fun facts : 1. A lot of the characters in the movie and names used are based on real people who were on the Titanic. A surprising amount of them in fact. They also found actors that at least closely resembled the actual person. Comparisons of the Captain and other to their real life photos are striking, the casting director did an incredible job. 2. A lot of background dialogue is based off of real conversations overheard by passengers in dining areas and while walking the deck the first few days. Conversations such as the man who said he wanted more speed and a reason for headlines, that was a real conversation reported by a passenger after surviving the initial wreckage. Same with tidbits like first class passengers having a hate on for Molly Brown, because she was a real person who was in fact what they called 'new money'. 3. There's interesting little nods to historical accuracy. From what I remember, there was a staff member who worked in maintenance or some related department, and he had the only key to the binoculars cabinet. He ended up being offboarded before departure (for some reason I can't remember), and just so happened to forget to leave the key behind. With a ship that big not being able to reroute back for a single key, they just relied on the lookouts being able to see anything coming well in advance because there weren't many reports of icebergs at that time of year, from their knowledge. And so the short scene between the lookouts where they don't have binoculars is actually historical fact, rather than just being an oversight by James Cameron for the sake of the plot. There's tons of other fascinating things to point out. And if you're interested, there's tons of videos on the behind-the-scenes, as well as breakdowns of the historical accuracy in documentary form. 😊👌

Being from Wisconsin I always loved the little shout-out in the film and yes our winters are very cold. Little fun fact about Lake Wissota In Wisconsin where Jack says he went ice fishing is a man-made lake and didn't exist until 1917, some 5 years after the Titanic went down. This gaffe led to a popular fan theory that Jack was a time traveler sent to save Rose.
@pvuccino
@pvuccino Год назад
Yes, but that wasn't that scene's only mistake. The Titanic met the cold current quite abruptly the night before it sank, so if Rose fell to the water at this point, she wouldn't suffer from hypothermia. But, it sets up the fact that they do end up in cold water later on, so I'm not complaining. (a lot! lol)
@victorsamsung2921
@victorsamsung2921 3 месяца назад
Not to forget the "gaffe" of Jack that he mentions the Santa Monica Pier rollercoaster to Rose, which was not built until after Titanic had sank, that further fueled the theory that Rose had made parts of her story to the crew of the MV Keldysh up.🤓

I saw this 8 times when it came out in theaters. Im something of a Titanic/history buff. This was an expensive movie to make that some didn’t think would be be able to match its budget at the box office/theater but it did and then some. It tied Ben Hur for the most Academy Awards earn by a a single movie. Hat help make it a great movie, in my opinion, was the use of the fictional love story of Jack and Rose which unlike other movies helped viewers better understand various key crew members and passengers and or the how social status/class truly separated people in the early 1900’s.

Billy Zane who played Cal improvised the scene when he flips the table to get a genuine reaction from Kate. Actor Eric Braeden who played John Jacob Astor III survived the sinking of the German Refugee ship The Wilhelm Gustlov as an infant. This ship had 9 to 10000 people crammed in and was torpedoed by a Russian sub, the ship sank so fast that only people on the uppermost decks could get off 8-9000 perished. Having said that, the scene when the dome crashes in over the grand staircase, Astor looks up and has a genuine fear because the scene was rehearsed without water.

Titanic’s maiden/first voyage lasted only lasted 4 days before it sank 2 and half miles below the North Atlantic. Titanic was some 200 miles away from the coast of Nova Scotia when she sank. If you look up the size comparison of Titanic pictured against the largest modern Cruise Ship you will most certainly be amazed and or shocked Magy by how small Titanic is compared to the modern cruise ship. In width and and height the modern cruise ship is 2 to 3 times bigger. In its day Titanic was at the time the largest man made moving object and or ship ever built.
@xqiuvmah

Fun fact: every shot of the titanic at dock is actually a mirrored shot (they flipped the video in post production). They had to do this because they only built half the ship as set design, but it was the wrong side. They found out after they built it that the titanic was docked on the starboard (right side). So they had costumes built backwards and all the signage was flipped, rather then rebuild the entire set
@AndyJakeGaming

No Titanic was docked at the port side. They knew about that from the start for the film. The starboard side was getting better sunlight on the set. So, they built that side and mirrored the shot.

Everyone can get annoyed or angry and then change their feelings. It doesn't mean one is bipolar! 😄 Bipolar disorder is when one experiences extreme swings in one's feelings/moods for no apparent reason--they just suddenly feel super-happy or super-sad, and they don't know why. Rose is not bipolar--she knows why she feels as she does at any given moment. Feelings are not a disorder except when they don't make sense and randomly disrupt one's life.
@VelkanAngels

Also, her feelings didn't actually change. She was never angry, which I think the actress acted out really well. She had feelings for him, but felt obligated to marry Cal, despite having no feelings for *him*, so she was doing her best to avoid having to answer the question, including pretending to be all offended. But you're right, even if she HAD been angry and ceased to be upon seeing the quality of his drawings, that still wouldnt have made her bipolar xP.

It's a common myth that the Titanic didn't have enough life boats. She actually had more than required. It was the regulation that was antiqued, since the Titanic was so much bigger than any ships before then and they hadn't had the time to change it accordingly. So, they just had as many boats as the other big ships of the era, which wasn't even close to the people that were actually on the Titanic. Thankfully, they changed the regulations after the accident.
@pauldoser9873
@pauldoser9873 Год назад
The regulation took into account that ocean liners traversed busy shipping lanes and life boats were expected to be used to ferry passengers and crew to rescue ships. Whenever we look at a map showing airplanes in flight, the skies seem filled with aircraft and that was also the case with ships in the ocean before modern commercial aviation. It was assumed that any ship in distress would be able to be aided by all of the other ships that would likely be in the area. This assumption was even correct in Titanic's case as the S.S. Californian was only about 10-miles away, stopped in the same ice field. Unfortunately, the Californian's wireless operator had gone to bed and a mirage effect from cold water of the ice field interacting with the warmer air may have obscured visual communication between the ships. Had Californian answered Titanic's distress call, the vast majority of the passengers may have been saved. In addition to lifeboat requirements, regulations also changed requiring the wireless radios on ships to be monitored for distress signals at all times. For comparison, RMS Carpathia was 58 miles away and arrived in scene 3-1/2 hours, about 100 minutes after Titanic sank. Carpathia's race to Titanic's aid was a herculean effort on the part of her captain, Arthur Rostron, and crew that I wish had been included in this movie as it was in A Night to Remember.

The scene where Jack is drawing Rose, and you gals were saying "he must be saying to himself 'Concentrate! Concentrate!' ... actually, I can assure you - as somebody who is avid about photography - that you having to concentrate on concentrating is *not* an issue! I am *seriously* acrophobic (afraid of heights), but to get a *great* photo I climbed out on the tree-limb of a tree growing out from a cliff, with a *100+ foot drop* (30+ meters) below me! I didn't pay *any* attention to it - until I had put my camera away and slung it back around behind me. *Then* I realized just where I was ... and froze solid! My friend, who had said I was _crazy_ to do it in the first place, and was standing on solid ground, climbed just a bit onto the tree, and then started to (slowly) help/guide me back onto _'terra firma'_ - but it took him about 15-20 minutes to do it, literally inch by inch! Point being: if you have that *drive* for something that you are truly dedicated to and passionate about ... when you are 'in the flow' as they say - nothing else seems real or even exists at that time! The artist in Jack knew what he was trying to achieve with the drawing, and nothing else mattered at that time! (Not even the beautiful naked lady that he was drawing! The drawing _itself_ was *everything* at the time!)

@@willfanofmanyii3751 Cal was wealthy but his family was "new money" so the Hockley name had no value. That's why he wanted to marry someone who had a respected name in Philadelphia high society, and Rose and Ruth being broke (no more "old money" left) gave him this opportunity so they could bail themselves out of poverty. I definitely could have worded that more clearly. He had money but no name, while they had a name but no money, and that's why this match was made. As for whether Cal ever actually loved Rose, I have no idea and there is nothing in the movie to indicate that he ever did. Of course, it depends on which definition of "love" we're using.

Unfortunately, the word "love" can refer to any number of things that have nothing to do with the true meaning of the word. This is something that needs to be clarified before discussing whether one character "loves" or ever "loved" another. Cal attempting to purchase Rose's affection with an expensive bauble was enough to convince me that he didn't truly love her. And he only proved it more later.

The chief engineer who designed Titanic knew that it could sink, but thought it was extremely unlikely, and he was right, this was a crazy "perfect storm" of an accident. There were some who considered it unsinkable, but they were wrong, obviously. @gokulgopan4397
@gokulgopan4397 Год назад
Nope. It was due to a shitty law. The lifeboat number is decided by the gross tonnage of the ship. As per Titanic's size, 16 were needed but they added 4 more extra. The notion at that time was that these boats would only be needed to ferry passengers from one ship to other. Transatlantic route was so busy that in a time of sinking, atleast one ship would be available immediately.

Titanic was one of 3 ships made to be “sister” ships. It was actually the second to be built- The Olympic was first, and the Brittanic last, delayed for a refit of new safety equipment and more lifeboats due to the sinking of the Titanic, which also required widening the entire ship. Britannic was converted into a hospital ship for WW1 and sank in shallow waters after striking a sea mine. Its new lifeboat system allowed them to launch 35 lifeboats in under half an hour, compared to Titanic’s 18 lifeboats in over two hours. Only about 50 passengers on Britannic died, 30 of which when their lifeboats got chopped up by the propellers that were raising out of the water as the ship sank. Olympic was taken out of service in the mid-1930’s, and scrapped. It was only slightly smaller than Titanic. Modern Cruise Ships dwarf Titanic in size. Also, Titanic was only required by law to have 16 lifeboats. It had 20, 18 of which were launched. At the time, the thinking was that these ships were so safe, that they would sink slowly enough that the lifeboats would be used to shuttle passengers to a rescue boat, as opposed to the lifeboats themselves being the rescue boat. There were so many ships traveling these lanes in the ocean, and with the wireless telegram capable of reaching over 500 miles, it was assumed that there would always be a rescue boat close by enough to do this… and there was. The Californian, just two miles away. Except , they weren't monitoring their wireless and didn't get Titanic's distress calls. No 3rd class passengers were intentionally locked inside the ship. Many got lost in its corridors, or couldn't read the directions which were only written in English.

Because of the depth of the wreck, it wasn't until the 1990s the wreck was ever scene. James Cameron(the director) either was the first to see it(footage used for the movie) or second and they still used the footage. Until the wreck was discovered, no one believed the ship had broken in half.

While never truly unsinkable it was very close to being so because of its multiple water tight compartments. Unfortunately the night it sank, the iceberg it collided with caused a damage scenario that Titanic’s designer’s hadn’t thought possible which as damage that led to the flooding of the first 5 to six watertight compartments which Titanic’s design could not handle. Had it been just the first 4 or a simple head on collision with the iceberg Titanic likely would have survived her iceberg collision. Because the first six watertight compartments were opened up, with what was long believed to be an enormous gash until modern exploration of the Titanic wreck proved it was a series of small openings along the the meeting points of hull plates where rivets had been apparently sheared off, it was not capable of staying afloat as the flooded compartments could not contain the incoming flood water as the weight brought the bow down to such an angle that the water flow in other compartments one by by one because they were not watertight at the top of watertight bulkheads.

Titanic wasn't the only ship of her kind. She had an older and younger sister, Olympic and Britannic. Olympic survived from 1911 til her scrapping in 1935. Britannic had an unlucky moment when she hit a sea mine as a hospital ship and went down near the island of Kea in Greece during World War 1. You should really review the Britannic movie from 2000.

Fun facts about the movie you watched so far in this video: 1: The wreck scenes are a mix of real wreck footage by Cameron, a miniature model of the wreck, and a wreck interior set. Very seamless. Whenever you see the 2 subs together it's the miniature. There is only one shot where the model don't match. On the model a B Deck pillar is broken, but not the wreck. 2: They built a ship set that's a replica of most of the ship. It is not built to full size because they reduced the length of the ship for the tank. Only one side was fully built, the Starboard side has the best sunlight on it. Titanic was docked at the Port side so they flipped the shot during those scenes. 3: The Grand Staircase sets stairs were made wider for people do go down side by side as people are bigger then they were in 1912. 4: The reason why they didn't add more lifeboats was because the British Board of Trade enforced lifeboat regulations that ships had to follow. You could only have a certain number of lifeboats even as ships got bigger. It took the Titanic disaster to make it where ships had to have enough lifeboats for everyone. 5: Captain Smith listened to the ice warnings. Sadly, one of the things the film should have explored more as people think they never listened at all from this film. They were looking for ice that night.

Why would the BBT want to limit the number of lifeboats you could have?
@AndyJakeGaming
@AndyJakeGaming Год назад
@@bigdream_dreambig The regulations made no extra provision for larger ships because they had not been changed since 1894. They had to update it after the Titanic disaster. They never thought a large ship would need enough lifeboats for everyone, ship would last long enough to ferry passengers to another ship. Sad even with enough lifeboats not everyone could be saved. Water reached the bridge while they were still lowering the last boats and had to cut the ropes.
@bigdream_dreambig
@bigdream_dreambig Год назад
@@AndyJakeGaming But why was there an upper limit on lifeboats in the first place??? I can understand why you might set a minimum number, but not a maximum one. Surely if someone had wanted to put more lifeboats on their (smaller) ship, that would have been acceptable?
@AndyJakeGaming
@AndyJakeGaming Год назад
@@bigdream_dreambig Making sure there wasn't more than a small ship would need. The law was outdated. 10 to 20 years old. The limit was not a problem for smaller ships. Because the law was not updated, larger ships could not have more. They should have upped the limit sooner.

@bigdream_dreambig Год назад
@@AndyJakeGaming I'm afraid you're still missing my point: Why would it matter if there was "more than a small ship would need"? Would having too many cause some sort of problem???

No body really thought the Titanic was unsinkable. The reason there were too few life boats is the plan to evacuate the ship. They assumed another ship could come and take on passengers. The life boats would return to get more people. There is a RU-vid channel, Historic Travels, where the host, Sam, explains in detail about the sinking of the Titanic . The scene where Jack draws Rose's picture was the first scene filmed. It was the first time Kate Winslet worked with Leonardo DiCaprio. Leonardos reaction was real. James Cameron actually drew the picture. According to Sam at Historic Travels, when the ship hit the iceberg, the ship mostly shuddered. They got it correct in the movie.

I know what you meant, as in having the "guts" to actually go through with killing oneself, but in general I don't think a person needs to have bravery to commit suicide, just enough motivation. For most, it is a cowardly act, although for some I understand, if their lives are nothing but misery and pain with no way to stop it except suicide (like Robin Williams). The only brave suicide is when someone sacrifices their life for the sake of others, but that is usually called sacrifice, not suicide. Life can be hard, so usually it takes more bravery to live than to die, and that's what Jack was telling Rose--that he didn't believe that she would take the coward's way out. It's not that she was too chicken to kill herself, but she is stronger than that and did want to live--strong enough to find a way to live life on her own terms rather than give up. She just needed to realize that there were other options, even for a woman in that era.

yeah, you're right about how lucky can actually be "unlucky." Mark Bingham was a passenger on United 93 and barely made his flight, but he was actually unlucky not aware of what was about to unfold. On the other hand, both Seth McFarlane and Mark Wahlberg were "unlucky" and missed their AA11 flight and they were fortunate to miss their flight. It would be nice if everyone missed their flight that morning so they call can still be alive.

You're normally right about a person's eyes staying the same, but if you pay attention in this case, Old Rose's (Gloria Stuart's) eyes are blue, while Young Rose's (Kate Winslet's) eyes are hazel. They're not the same color at all, and when the shot faded from Young Rose to Old Rose, they used Old Rose's blue eyes. But look at Young Rose's eyes after that scene--they're hazel, of course. Oh well. Cameron was not going to hire different actresses just to get their eye colors to match. He had the actresses he really wanted, so he did the best he could with this fade shot.

36:47 I remember that I started wanting to draw people after seeing this film in the cinema. I was about 9 years old in 1997 and I was already drawing, but not people. I drew characters from my favorite cartoons and animes and sometimes some animals. I tried to draw my aunt while she was watching TV (she was dressed, ok?!) and... it didn't look exactly as good as Jack's, but it was my first experience drawing a person. My aunt complained and said I drew her fat, but she also said she was impressed that I drew my first live portrait and she says she feels honored that she was my first model.

Initially the lifeboats were so empty because they couldn't get people to get in them. First, to prevent panic the crew had downplayed the urgency too well, even telling passengers the lifeboats were being lowered only as a precaution, never confirming that they knew the ship was actually taking on water. So most passengers didn't really believe the ship would sink. It's reputation as "unsinkable" definitely played a part, as well. It's also not clear that all of the crew even knew the ship was sinking. The White Star Line was criticized for their poor communication and lack of preparedness by both the British and American investigations. Secondly, virtually no one knew there weren't enough lifeboats. So when families and couples were split up they weren't concerned because they believed there were plenty of boats for everyone. Aside from that, many people testified that the passengers were afraid to get on the little lifeboats and leave the security of the big ship. Even passengers that did get on lifeboats testified that they stayed close to the ship because they believed they would be reboarding when the crisis had been cleared. And as an Epitaph, it's questionable that more lifeboats would have done anything. The final Lifeboat was loaded 15 minutes before the Titanic had disappeared from the surface of the water so it's very questionable that more boats could have even been loaded and lowered.
